Это проблема является куда более актуальной, чем о ней думают. Согласно недавно опубликованной информации в РФ жертвами пожаров, которые вызывают шаровые молнии, ежегодно становятся до 1200 человек. Таким образом, раньше ШМ была явлением, опасность которого хорошо осознавалась средневековым населением. Стоит отметить современные странности в освещении вопроса ШМ. В 2012-2014 годах с сайта Ютуб пропало около 800 000 видео о шаровой молнии. Также странно ведут себя глобальные агрегаторы новостей. Например, в Японии в мае 2021 года за неделю было выдано три эпизода с ШМ, но глобальный поиск о случаях ШМ в мире на английском языке не выдает ни одного случая. Получается, что тема ШМ аналогична темам самоубийств или отравлений — на них негласно наложена полная цензура.
Герике обращает внимание на то, что многие здания античности и его времени имеют различные заостренные конструкции на крышах и стенах. Он предполагает, что заостренные конструкции вызывают то, что сегодня называют коронным разрядом. Таким образом, расходуя атмосферное электричество, уменьшается шанс появления шаровой молнии. Часто решетки перед камином были сделаны из металла и имели заостренные концы. Это делалось по тому, что ШМ может залететь в трубу. Другим распространенным методом защиты были ставни, которые должны были предотвращать залет ШМ в помещение. Они использовались даже тогда, когда стекло уже стало обыденностью. Еще одним методом была расстановка на улицах столбов с металлической решеткой. Здесь может использоваться принцип клетки Фарадея, то есть по ШМ должна была быть уловлена этой решеткой. Герике считает, что так как люди боятся ШМ, используют металл для уменьшения вероятности ее появления, то отсюда может брать начало еще одно поверье - железо отгоняет нечистую силу.

From here, according to Gerike, could be believed about the gap through the pipe of spirits, and then Santa Claus. Often such designs could be found in the mountains.
