9Seven sorrows the priests give their Virgin;
10 But thy sins, which are seventy times seven,

1] John Morley, anonymously reviewing Poems and Ballads in the Saturday Review (August 4, 1866): 145-47, singles out "Dolores" for its "nameless shameless abominations," "fleshly things," and "unspeakable foulnesses" (quoted from Swinburne: The Critical Heritage, ed. Clyde K. Hyder [London: Routledge and Kegan Paul, 1970]: 23-24). An unsigned review in London Review (August 4, 1866): 130-31, describes Dolores as "a mere deification of incontinence .... depraved and and morbid in the last degree" (37).

Swinburne responded to these and other reviews in Notes on Poems and Reviews (London: John Camden Hotten, 1866), asedited in Complete Works by Sir Edmond Gosse and Thomas James Wise, Prose Works, Vol. VI (London: William Heinemann, Ltd., 1926): 353-73.

Next on the list of accusation stands the poem of Dolores. The gist and bearing of this I should have thought evident enough, viewed by the light of other which precede and follow it. I have striven here to express that transcient state of spirit through which a man may be supposed to pass, foiled in love and weary of loving, but not yet in sight of rest; seeking refuge in those `violent delights' which `have violent ends,' in fierce and frank sensualities which at least profess to be no more than they are. This poem, like Faustine, is so distinctly symbolic and fanciful that it cannot justly be amenable to judgment as a study in the school of realism. The spirit, bowed and discoloured by suffering and by passion (which are indeed the same thing and the same word), plays for awhile with its pleasures and its pains, mixes and distorts them with a sense half-humorous and half-mournful, exults in bitter and doubtful emotions:
Moods of fantastic sadness, nothing worth.

It sports with sorrow, and jests aginst itself; cries out for freedom and confesses the chain; decorates with the name of goddess, crowns anew as the mystical Cotytto, some woman, real or ideal, in whom the pride of life with its companion lusts is incarnate. In her lover's half-shut eyes, her fierce unchaste beauty is transfigured, her cruel sensual eyes have a meaning and a message; there are memories and secrets in the kisses of her lips. She is the darker Venus, fed with burnt-offering and blood-sacrifice; the veiled image of that pleasure which men impelled by satiety and perverted by power have sought through ways as strange as Nero's before and since his time; the daughter of lust and death, and holding of both her parents; Our Lady of Pain, antagonist alike of trivial sins and virtues: no Virgin, and unblessed of men; no mother of the Gods or God; no Cybele, served by sexless priests or monks, adored of Origen or Atys; no likeness of her in Dindymus or Loreto.

The next act in this lyrical melodrama of passion represents a new stage and scene. The worship of desire has ceased; the mad commotion of sense has stormed itself out; the spirit, clear of the old regret that drove it upon such violent ways for a respite, healed of the fever that wasted it in the search for relief among fierce fancies and tempestuous pleasures, dreams now of truth discovered and repose attained. Not the martyr's ardour of selfless love, an unprofitable flame that burnt out and did no service -- not the rapid rage of pleasure that seemed for a little to make the flesh divine, to clothe the naked senses with the fiery raiment of faith; but a stingless love, an innocuous desire. `Hesperia,' the tenderest type of woman or of dream, born in the westward `islands of the blest,' where the shadows of all happy and holy things live beyond the sunset a sacred and a sleepless life, dawns upon his eyes a western dawn, risen as the fiery day of passion goes down, and risen where it sank. Here, between moonrise and sunset, lives the love that is gentle and faithful, neither giving too much nor asking -- a bride rather than a mistress, a sister rather than a bride. But not at once, or not for ever, can the past be killed and buried; hither also the huntress follows her flying prey, wounded and weakened, still fresh from the fangs of passion; the cruel hands, the amorous eyes, still glitter and allure. Qui a bu boira: the feet are drawn back towards the ancient ways. Only by lifelong flight, side by side with the goddess that redeems, shall her slave of old escape from the goddess that consumes: if even thus one may be saved, even thus distance the bloodhounds.

This is the myth or fable of my poem; and it is not without design that I have slipped in, between the first and the second part, the verses called The Garden of Proserpine, expressive, as I meant they should be, of that brief total pause of passion and of thought, when the spirit, without fear or hope of good things or evil, hungers and thirsts only after the perfect sleep .... (360-62)

In a letter of September 28, 1866, Swinburne adds, of this essay, "I have proved Dolores to be little less than a second sermon on the Mount" (I, 186).

Он оглянулся на приятеля, читающего письмо, и увидел на
столе книги. В глазах тотчас вспыхнула тоскливая зависть и
жадность, точно у голодного при виде пищи. Враскачку он
двинулся к столу и вот уже любовно перебирает книги. Скользит
глазами по названиям, по именам авторов, выхватывает обрывки
текста, -- ласкает том за томом и руками и взглядом, -- но лишь
одну книгу он когда-то читал. Остальные книги и писатели
незнакомы. Ему попался том Суинберна, и он начал читать подряд,
стихотворение за стихотворением, и забыл, где он, и щеки у него
разгорелись. Дважды он закрывал книгу и, придерживая страницу
пальцем, еще раз смотрел имя автора. Свинберн! Надо запомнить.
У этого малого глаза на месте, он все видел как надо -- и цвет
и сверкающий свет. Кто же такой этот Свинберн? Давным-давно
помер, как почти все поэты? Или еще живой, пишет? Он поглядел
на титульный лист. Да, у Свинберна есть и другие книги. Что ж,
утром первым делом надо сходить в библиотеку, разжиться его
книжицами. Парень опять погрузился в чтение и забыл обо всем на
свете. Он не заметил, что в комнату вошла молодая женщина.
Опомнился, лишь услыхав слова Артура:
-- Руфь, это мистер Иден.
Он закрыл книгу, заложил указательным пальцем и, еще
прежде чем обернуться, ощутил радостное волнение -- не от

представления, чувства тотчас вспыхнут, запляшут, точно
трепетное пламя. Был он на редкость восприимчив и отзывчив, а
живое воображение не знало покоя в беспрестанном поиске подобий
и различий. "Мистер Иден" -- вот что радостно поразило его,
ведь всю жизнь его звали Иден. Мартин Иден или просто Мартин. И
вдруг, "мистер"! Это кое-что да значит, отметил он про себя.
Память мигом обратилась в громадную камеру-обскуру, и перед его
внутренним взором заскользили нескончаемой вереницей картины
пережитого -- кочегарки и кубрики, стоянки и причалы, тюрьмы и
кабаки, тифозные бараки и трущобы, и одновременно
раскручивалась нить, воспоминаний -- как называли его при всех
этих поворотах судьбы.
А потом он обернулся и увидел девушку. И вихрь призрачных
картин растаял. Он увидел бледное воздушное создание с облаком
золотистых волос и одухотворенным взглядом огромных голубых
глаз. Он не заметил, что на ней надето, знал только, что одежда
была такая же поразительная, как она сама. Хрупкий золотистый
цветок на тоненьком стебле. Нет, дух, божество, богиня -- земля
не могла породить такую возвышенную красоту. Или, выходит,
книги не врут, и в высших сферах и впрямь много таких, как она.
Ее вполне мог бы воспеть этот малый Свинберн. Видать, когда
писал про ту деву, Изольду из книжки со стола, какая-нибудь
такая и была у него на уме. Все это он увидел, почувствовал;
подумал в одно мгновенье. А меж тем все шло своим чередом.
Девушка протянула руку и, прямо глядя ему в глаза, просто,
будто мужчина, обменялась с ним рукопожатием. Женщины, каких он
до сих пор встречал, жмут руку по-другому. Да по правде
сказать, мало кто из них здоровается за руку. Поток
воспоминаний, картин -- как он знакомился с женщинами --
хлынул, грозя его захлестнуть. Но он отмахнулся от них и
смотрел на девушку. Отродясь такой не видал. Ему знакомы совсем
другие женщины! И тотчас подле Руфи, по обе стороны,
выстроились женщины, которых он знал. Бесконечно долгое
мгновенье стоял он посреди какой-то портретной галереи, где
царила она, а вокруг расположилось множество женщин, и всех
надо было окинуть беглым взглядом и оценить, и непреложной
мерой была она. Вот вялые нездоровые лица фабричных работниц и
бойкие, ухмыляющиеся девчонки из кварталов к югу от
Маркетстрит. Скотницы с ферм и смуглые мексиканки с неизменной
сигаретой в углу рта. Их вытеснили японки с кукольными
личиками, жеманно переступающие ножками в туфельках на
деревянной подошве; евразийки с нежными лицами, отмеченными
печатью вырождения; пышнотелые, темнокожие, увенчанные цветами
женщины Южных морей. А потом всех заслонила нелепая чудовищная
толпа -- неряхи и распустехи, слоняющиеся на панелях
Уайтчепеля, опухшие от джина ведьмы из гнусных притонов и все
непристойные, сквернословящие исчадия ада, гарпии в ужасающем
женском обличье, которые охотятся на матросов, портовая грязь и
нечисть, распоследние отребья и отбросы человечества.

В одном из самых не блестящих своих эссе -- "Суинберн как поэт", 1920
-- Элиот берется составить "Избранное" Суинберна и перечисляет главные его
вещи: "The Leper" (Прокаженный), "Laus Veneris" (Хвала Венере), "The Triumpf
of Time" (Триумф Времени)... Как всегда, выбор показателен не столько для
автора, сколько для составителя. "Кажется, других стихов, забыть которые
было бы непростительно, у Суинберна нет", -- пишет Элиот. Но первое из
названных -- драматический монолог в манере Броунинга и Теннисона (дивного
Теннисона "Улисса" и "Святого Симеона Столпника"), а третье если чем и
известно, то, пожалуй, лишь несколькими биографическими вкраплениями --
редчайшими у Суинберна, кажется, не имевшего биографии, если верить его
биографам. (Знаменитая строка из "Триумфа":
I shall never be friends again with roses (Мне роз теперь друзьями не
назвать)
на Суинберна совершенно не похожа.) Итак, за вычетом двух названных,
элиотовскую подборку Суинберна придется свести к одному на самом деле
прославленному стихотворению "Laus Veneris", наконец-то доносящему до нас
подлинный голос поэта.
Из сказанного ясно одно: голос этот Элиоту не близок. Точнее, теперь не
близок. И не только Элиоту, но всей Англии. Столетний юбилей это показал.
Литературные обычаи англичан не поощряют ни хвалу, ни хулу, но безразличие и
пресыщенность общества очевидны. Человек по имени Суинберн не интересен
никому. Жалкая склонность нашего времени сводить произведение к личному
документу, к биографическому свидетельству искалечила и художественные
оценки. С Суинберном произошло то же, что с Уайльдом. Последний -- кто об
этом помнит? -- написал "Дом шлюхи" и "Сфинкса", он же -- кто этого не
знает? -- создал крайне неровную "Балладу Редингской тюрьмы". Первые забыты,
последняя гремит. Причина очевидна: первые декоративны (а этот жанр в нашем
обиходе заведомо скомпрометирован), последняя "проникнута человечностью". В
случае с Уайльдом несправедливость можно перенести, Суинберн -- иное дело: у
него пострадали бы вещи в буквальном смысле слова блистательные -- "Ave
atque Vale" (Славься и здравствуй), "Итилл", "Анактория", "Маска царицы
Савской", "Долорес", "Аголиав", "Гермафродит", замечательные хоры в
"Аталанте", "Бесплодное бдение"... Говорят, атеизм Суинберна, его
республиканская вера отошли в прошлое. В памяти и на губах у меня --
неуничтожимое, физическое ощущение ритмики его стиха. Ощущение вот этих
строк:
Men shall not see bright fire nor hear the sea, Nor mix their hearts
with music, no behold Cast forth of heaven, with feet of awful gold And
plumeless wings that make the bright air blind" Lightning, with thunder for
a hound behind...(Не знать сиянья им, не слышать моря, Не влиться в хор, не
видеть за собой Тот райский строй, что золотой стопой И блеском крыльев
солнцу указуя, Грядет, громами кликая борзую)
Или одной-единственной строки:
The thunder of the trumpets of the night (Громовый рокот полуночных
труб).
Любой из биографов Суинберна сетует на скудость его биографии. "Всего
только жизнь и смерть -- как мало", -- кажется, в один голос говорят все.
Они забывают сокровища его ума: ясность воображения и тонкую музыку речи
