Purple Smaragd” is one of three favorites in my spring 2015 garden. I am a sweet tomato fan, and this one is very sweet indeed, with soft but not mealy flesh, juicy, and beautiful in striped, fat, pointy fingers. I thought at first it might be one of the Tiger series, renamed, but it is not. Purple Smaragd is said to be an heirloom from Wienerwald / Austria. I do wonder if it truly is an heirloom, as I didn't know that striped varieties like this were around long enough for that title. This was one of my very favorites for fresh eating, no salt or anything else, just pop tomato into mouth. Mmmm. Swallow and repeat.

85 days. One of the largest green beefsteaks. Can grow to over 1 pound and are just delicious. They have brilliant, neon-green flesh with a strong, sweet, and fruity flavor, much tastier than most red tomatoes. This family heirloom from Germany is beautiful. The winner of the 2003 Heirloom Garden Show’s taste test.

I have had seeds for this tomato for several years but for some reason I never got around to planting them. I am glad that I finally did. I can now add Southern Nights to my list of great tasting black tomatoes. It was also one of the heavier producing black tomatoes. I will grow this one again and if you have not tried it you should.
85 days. Lycopersicon esculentum. Plant produces good yields of 10 oz blackish-red beefsteak tomatoes. Very flavorful with a rich tomato taste. Excellent variety for canning. A potato leaf strain. A heirloom variety from Russia. Determinate.

Fruits are pink and striped with orange.
Unique julienne cherry tomatoes that will be sought after for their exceptionally sweet, juicy, tropical flavor. Fruits can also be picked prematurely and allowed to ripen off the vine without compromising the flavor - or let them ripen naturally and enjoy your garden view! Widely adaptable with extremely high yields over an extended period. Crack resistant.

his Russian heirloom was sent to me by a good friend in Europe who claimed it was a big-producer. It was certainly a big-producer here in central Ohio during the 2014 summer.
Out of the 20 new tomato varieties I grew this year, it produced the most fruit per plant. It's August 24th and I've already harvested nearly 22 pounds per plant.
8.Goose Creek
75-80 days
This delectable historical family heirloom is one of the rarest plants we offer and our top seller. The flavor and color run deep in Goose Creek, a stunning, hot reddish/pink fruit; I'd call it garnet or scarlet. The fruits are usually round or slightly flattened, occasionally lobed, some with tiny gold streaks or speckling.
Juicy, very sweet and intensely tomatoey as if injected with concentrated tomato flavor. Ambrosial with a luxurious, silken texture, a lingering touch of sweetness and rich, earthy sweet flavors, it produces high fruit yields and very few seeds.
This family treasure comes to us from my old friend and edible landscape expert, Jimmy Williams, author of the top selling gardening book, 'From Seed to Skillet' and owner of HayGround Organic Gardening in California. Jimmy and his Native Island Gullah-Geechee forebears are descendants of slaves brought in bondage from The Caribbean to the coastal islands of the Southern United Statesto grow rice for plantation owners.
The Gullah are still keepers of a fascinating culture of food, language and beloved traditions--a most extraordinary and delightful people.
The seeds of this sublime fruit have been passed down through generations when Jimmy's great-great grandmother, a young Caribbean slave, smuggled them with her aboard ship. When the ship docked at Charleston near Goose Creek, South Carolina, she had the treasured seeds with her, hidden in her skirt pocket and planted them that first spring. Jimmy's grandmother, Elouise Watson, shared this precious heirloom with him more than 55 years ago, assuring Goose Creek's place in his family's garden for generations to come.
Along with being very heat tolerant, it shows remarkable cold-tolerance along the cooler coastal areas where the fruits continue to set and ripen through November and December. It is a wonderful choice for growing in containers and does extremely well in the greenhouse.
A rare and exquisite selection for your table and your historical garden. Goose Creek is a delightful gift for the tomato lover on your list.

Also called Carbon Copy by some. this is a brand new cherry created by Ron Rhyne of Muskogee, Oklahoma. As some of you know the large tomato Carbon is one of my favorite purples. Sweet as can be! Ron wanted to create a cherry from Carbon that tasted as good as it’s larger parent. He succeeded. I grew out Carbon Copy this summer and it did not disappoint. Beautiful, purple orbs of sweetness that taste just like sugar. This is my new favorite cherry. I highly recommend this one.

The sugary nectar of this huge 5 inch tomato's creamy, dense, red flesh is intensely rich, with perfect sweet-acid balance and sublime, complex flavors reminiscent of the finest of the "old-fashioned" tomato flavors. This big, beautiful irresistible 1-2 lb. deep red fruit is the talk of the tomato world and has found its way into Top 10 favorite tomato lists of gourmands worldwide. It is perfection. Supply is limited, please order early. It is said that Marianna's Peace is among the 3 finest tasting tomatoes in existence.
Marianna was from a family of farmers in Bohemia, Czechoslovakia. During World War II, in May of 1945 when she was 17, Russian soldiers came to her school and forced Marianna and all her schoolmates into a truck to be taken to Siberia. During the journey, she and a few others escaped by jumping from the moving truck, but Marianna was shot in the leg just as she crossed the Czech border. With the help of her friends, she was able to continue on to the town of Weiden, Bavaria. She lost all contact with her parents and brothers for the next ten years, but after a long and diligent search with the aid of The Red Cross, she finally found them in 1955.
Before he died, her father gave her a little bundle of the seeds.
Marianna married, and in 1957 moved to Washington State with her husband where they raised four children.
The legacy of these seeds reaches back to the early 1900's and year after year the tomatoes borne from this marvelous heirloom continue to be treasured for their outstanding taste and beauty. Incredibly sweet, creamy, with dense red flesh, rich and luscious, reminiscent of the finest of those "old-fashioned" tomato flavors, the memories of which are the stuff of dreams for all tomato lovers.

This was one of our earliest and tastiest tomatoes in 2010, which was for many gardeners in our area, “the year of late, bland tomatoes.” Very compact and early plants. 1-3 oz, yellow-gold globes are plentiful and early, yielding for quite a while despite being determinate. One of the only yellow tomatoes we grew for market and CSA. Dwarf enough for container culture. Russian origin.

9,
This was the favorite of one of our growers. I have to say I am quite fond of it myself. I have been growing this one for several years and decided we needed to share it. It was also a standout for some of the market growers we know. Everyone loved this tomato. It is picture perfect. Bright red perfectly formed globes of tomato perfection. Outstanding in just about every way and should be on everyone's list. This is a must have.

I got these from a buddy in Michigan and he claimed they were one of the best in his garden. Well let me say that do pretty darn good here in Dixie too. Outstanding flavor that is unique to the black tomatoes. Just the right size for a gourmet burger. My only regret with this tomato is not growing more of them.

Purple Beauty was grown out from the original hybrid Purple Belle, and now produces open pollinated seeds for seed saving and home seed production. The flavour of these remarkable fruits is mild, sweet, and succulent, with a fine, crispy texture. The cut fruits look absolutely spectacular mixed with yellow or orange peppers, so they belong in every foodie’s garden.

3. Picollo de Parici Cantrolino
Cucumber Piccolo di Parigi. Green pickler 3-4 inches long. One of the first cucumbers to produce fruit and produces over a long season. I had six or seven plants on a trellis this past summer; I could not give away all that they produced. Was still picking them in early October. Very nice taste. Use fresh or for pickles. If using transplants, start 3 weeks before the set-out date, which should be once the soil has warmed up well and the weather settled down (usually a week or so after the last frost date for your area). Put five seeds in a six inch pot; after germinating, let three remain. Cucumbers resent root disturbance so transplant carefully. Place plants three feet apart in rows six feet apart.

7, Spacemaster
60 days. If you've had trouble growing cukes in your climate, or if you don't have the space to invest in a sprawling vine, Spacemaster 80 is the solution! This productive plant is only 36 inches long, yet bears a big harvest of slender, smooth 7- to 8-inch cukes. The fruit is crisp and tasty, with a satisfying bite just right in a slicer. Spacemaster 80 performs very well in a wide range of climates, and is resistant to Cucumber Mosaic Virus and Scab.
Direct-sow seeds in a sunny spot after all danger of frost is past, or start indoors and transplant when the first true leaf appears. Cucumbers can be allowed to grow on the ground, but for longer, straighter fruit and to save garden space, grow them in a cage or on a trellis, allowing 1 foot between plants. Keep them well-watered, and keep the fruits picked promptly. Pkt is 30 seeds.
