Lesley Fotherby

Lesley Fotherby was born in 1946 and studied at the Bath Academy of Art, the Ravensbourne College of Art, Kent, and finally Leicester University, before taking up a career in teaching in secondary schools and adult education centres. She became a full-time artist in the early 1980s, when she was introduced to Chris Beetles, and took up representation with the gallery.
Lesley's interest in form and movement originated from her early figurative work with the Northern School of Contemporary Dance, combining motion and spontaneity with an expert analysis of form, which she transfers to her paintings of cats, preferring to work directly from life rather than the photograph.
Her cat drawings have been published in Cats: Drawing and Painting in Watercolour (1993), The Cat Who Came to Stay (1992), and five books by Doreen Tovey: Cats in May (1993), Cats in the Belfry (1993), Double Trouble (1994), The New Boy (1994) and More Cats in the Belfry (1995).
Lesley Fotherby is regarded as one of the best naturalistic cat artists in the country.
