The SHOCKING case that baffled detectives

Среда, 13 Марта 2024 г. 21:59 + в цитатник

The killer, concealed behind shrubbery, dropped his flashlight and sprinted to the rear of the residence, bounded up the porch steps and tore at the screen. Virgil Starks was in the front room listening to a radio. His wife, attired in a nightgown, was in an adjoining bedroom. A fleet of radio-equipped highway patrol cars patrolled Texarkana nightly. She said the man did not rape her, but that he "abused me terribly." She begged him to kill her.
Over a month later on Monday, June 10, Virgil Starks' father, Jack Starks, added a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of his son's killer. Peggy Swinney told Sheriff Presley about a little address book from the Spring Lake Park murders that was only know to a handful of law enforcement officers. Join Mike and Morf for the 250th episode of Criminology as they discuss the Texarkana moonlight murders. The police left no stone unturned in trying to identify the murderer. Over the years, many different people have been suspected.

Like the previous murder, a bullet casing indicated that a .32 Colt automatic pistol was the murder weapon. The couple were traumatized and both had sustained head injuries. With that in mind, it is easy to see how they could have identified two men of different races when questioned later.
The police also found a .32 cartridge shell at the scene, most likely from a Colt automatic pistol. The movie reminds me of one of those ace 1940's chillers, like Follow Me Quietly . Based on fact, Sundown is about a phantom killer who stalks lover's lanes in Texarkana, and police Serial killers efforts to catch him. Of course, without the heavy hand of a '40's Production Code, Sundown is much more graphic than anything from that earlier decade. Nineteen-year-old Mary Jeanne Larey and her boyfriend, Jimmy Hollis, 24, were like any other young lovers in Texarkana tonight.

There were only two bullet holes in the window, leading Sheriff Davis to believe an automatic rifle was used. Investigators declared that after the killer shot Virgil, he waited patiently outside the window to shoot Virgil's wife. By March 27, local police had interviewed around fifty to sixty witnesses, including patrons and employees of Club Dallas, a local bar near the crime scene. "Bill" Presley and three other officers arrived at the scene of the attack, but the assailant had already left. Larey spotted an old car parked off the road, but found it empty, and was again confronted by the attacker, who asked her why she was running.
While some sources say he later died in prison, others say he died in 1994 at a nursing home in Dallas. An unidentified assailant often known as the Texarkana Phantom Killer committed a number of murders and assaults in Texarkana through the spring of 1946. While there was one major suspect, he was never convicted of these crimes. The attacks served partially as the basis for a motion picture, The Town that Dreaded Sundown.

When trying to determine such characteristics as the content, chronology, and location of writings by Doodie, a reading of 1948 newspaper articles can be confusing and misleading. It is also desirable to establish a nomenclature by which reference can be made to specific writings during discussion and analysis of such writings. Despite how horrendous many of these Texas crimes are, many have led to significant, positive changes. Jimmy Hollis and Mary Jeanne Larey managed to survive. Perhaps the Phantom Killer hadn’t worked up the nerve yet.
She regained consciousness while her mother was taking her to the bathroom and then she fainted again and fell to the floor. She picked her up and put her in the bed before calling a doctor. While waiting for the doctor, Virginia regained consciousness and then fainted again, due to sunstroke.
Corey is repeatedly stabbed in the back, but Jami manages to escape to tell the tale. Never having seen the 1976 film of the same name, I can not attest to the originality or compare it to the 2014 film. Aguirre-Sacasa and director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon are very honest about and respect the tale's history and, in doing so, find the perfect balance in their film successfully.

In the room with his body -- he apparently used poison -- were found notes telling that he killed himself because he was the Texarkana "phantom." B. Tennison, a 17-year-old freshman at the University of Arkansas. His body was found in the rooming house where he lived.
Paul Martin and Betty Jo Booker were the second double murder three weeks later in April. Virgil Starks was killed and his wife Katie was shot twice at the beginning of May 1946. For example, the New York Daily News reports that he used the barrel of his gun to sexually assault one of his first victims, a 19-year-old woman named Mary Jeanne Larey. She was one of the few to survive the attacks, but most were not so fortunate.

Titled ‘The Town That Dreaded Sundown’, the film is inspired by true events in Texana. Retired from the Rangers in the early 1950s to pursue a career in show business. It was based on an investigation conducted by Gonzalez. Many claimed that Captain Gonzávelas took credit for many things he was not responsible for, but that surprised no one at the time.
Katie made the call which rang twice before she was shot twice in the face making her fall to the ground. However, she managed to get up and rushed to the neighbor’s home where she was rushed to hospital. The Phantom Killer managed to escape after this attack. Credit producer-director Pierce with making shrewd use of a small budget. The Arkansas locations add both color and authenticity, along with the unforced drawls of southern born leads Johnson and Prine. The movie also does a good job of recreating a '40's milieu, even down to the girls' bobby-sox that brings back fond memories.

Virgil had been sitting on a heating pad when he was wounded and the heating pad had set the chair on fire. Katie had managed to cross the street to her sister’s house to seek help. Though she lost a lot of blood, Katie survived though Virgil was killed. There were a few more clues and items of physical evidence this time. Spent shells, a flashlight, bloody prints and other elements of the case were investigated.
