Follow these step-by-step instructions to sew a roll-up shade.

MATERIALS
Fabric A for shade front
Fabric B for lining
Fabric C for ties
1-inch-diameter wooden dowel
1×1-inch mounting board
Staple gun and staples
Screwdriver and No. 8 wood screws

INSTRUCTIONS
Note: All measurements include 1⁄2-inch seam allowances unless otherwise noted.

Determine the size to cut the shade fabric and lining. (Length = window length + 3-1⁄2 inches for seam allowances and casing. Width = window width (instructions are for an inside mount) + 1 inch for seam allowances.) Cut the shade fabric and the lining to these measurements. With right sides together, sew one short side and both long sides of the shade and lining together. Turn right side out; press. To form the casing, press the bottom raw edge under 1 inch. Sew close to the inner pressed edge.

Cut the mounting board 1⁄2-inch shorter than the width of the sewn shade. Place the shade, lining side down, on a flat surface. Position the mounting board on the lining side of the shade 2 inches below the shade's raw edge (see Diagram 1). Fold the raw edge side of the shade over the board. Staple through the fabric along the back of the board (see Diagram 2). Insert the dowel into the casing sewn at the bottom edge as shown.

Diagram 2

Determine the length to cut the shade ties. (Length = window length × 2 + 12 inches for overhang.) From the tie fabric, cut two 3-1⁄2-inch-wide strips at calculated length. Fold each strip in half lengthwise with right sides together and raw edges aligned. Sew along the long side and one short side of each piece, leaving one short side open. Turn the strips right side out through the openings and press. Turn the raw edges along the open short side under 1⁄2 inch, and hand-sew or top-stitch the opening closed.

Drape the ties over the top of the board so that equal lengths hang on each side of the shade (see Diagram 3). Position each tie as desired from the side edges of the shade. Staple the ties at the top of the board.

Diagram 3

Attach the shades to the window using No. 8 wood screws. Referring to Diagram 4, mount the screws through the bottom of the mounting board, screwing into the inside top of the window frame.
