Abbreviations:

st(s), ch/ch(s), sl st – stitch(es), chain/chain stitch(es), slip stitch
sc, dc – single crochet, double crochet
(3 dc) – work all the stitches within parentheses in next stitch
sk 5 – skip the indicated amount of stitches
lp(s) – loop(s)

Row 5f, Row 5r – row 5 forward pass, row 5 return pass. Each row in Tunisian crochet is worked in two passes – a forward pass and a return pass. The work is always held with the right side facing. On the forward pass the stitches are picked up and gathered on hook, on the return pass the stitches are worked off. There are different ways to pick up the stitches. After you have picked up all the stitches on a row, there will be one loop more on hook than the number of picked up stitches (one loop was on hook from the beginning). Unless otherwise directed, the return pass is worked as follows: bring the yarn over hook and pull it through one loop on hook, continue to bring the yarn over hook and pull it through two loops on hook until you have only one loop left on hook.

two 1, 2, 3, 2 – work off in Tunisian crochet: the numbers indicate how many stitches should be worked off at a time on the return pass. In this case you should work as follows: bring the yarn over hook and pull in through one loop on hook, yarn over hook and pull it throught two loops on hook, yarn over hook again and pull it through 3 loops, and yarn over hook once again and pull it through 2 loops.

{2}14 – the number within braces shows how many loops should be worked off at a time, the number after braces shows how many times it should be repeated

ts – Tunisian simple stitch: insert hook under a vertical bar on previous row from right to left, bring the yarn over hook and pull it through; the first row is worked on a foundation chain – insert hook into the back loop of a chain stitch unless otherwise directed. The first chain stitch and the first vertical bar on each row should be skipped.

2 tog – work 2 stitches together: insert hook under next 2 vertical bars on previous row from right to left, bring the yarn over hook and pull it through under both bars

{ } – repeat instructions within braces as many times as directed
/ – the number after slash symbol shows the amount of stitches for the row or the amount of loops on hook at the end of the row

Leave a long yarn end and cut the yarn. Thread the yarn through the loops on hook, pull it firmly and fasten off on the inside. Save the end for sewing up the mitten later.

Thumb

The thumb is worked flat also. Start working the thumb using 9 stitches skipped on row 22, 2 stitches picked up between rows 22-23 on the sides of thumb opening, and 6 new stitches that will be casted on. It makes 17 loops. When you pick up a stitch between two rows, insert hook under one thread between the rows from back to front, bring the yarn over hook and pull it through. This way the thread will be twisted and it will prevent hole forming at the base of the thumb.

Row 1 for left thumb: Cast on 1 st using backward-loop cast-on, pick up 1 st between rows 22-23 on the right side of thumb opening, pick up 9 sts skipped on row 22, pick up 1 st between rows 22-23 on the left side of thumb opening, cast on 5 sts using backward-loop cast-on. / 16 ts

Row 1 for right thumb: Cast on 6 sts using backward-loop cast-on, pick up 1 st between rows 22-23 on the right side of thumb opening, pick up 9 sts skipped on row 22, pick up 1 st between rows 22-23 on the left side of thumb opening. / 16 ts

Rows 2-10: Work in Tunisian simple stitch. / 16 ts
Row 11f: 16 ts. / 17 lps
Row 11r: two 1, 2, 3, 2, 3, {2}3, 3, 2, 3, {2}2.
Row 12f: 1 ts, 2 tog, 1 ts, 2 tog, 3 ts, 2 tog, 1 ts, 2 tog, 2 ts. / 13 lps
Row 12r: two 1, 2, 4, {2}3, 4, {2}2.
Row 13f: 1 ts, 3 tog, 3 ts, 3 tog, 2 ts. / 9 lps

Leave a long yarn end and cut the yarn. Thread the yarn through the loops on hook, pull it firmly and fasten off on the inside. Use the yarn end to sew up the sides of the thumb, and to sew on the back base of the thumb.

Edging

The edging is worked in two rows, both rows are worked in same stitches along the edge. The shell lace is worked first, then a row of slip stitches is worked on the base of the lace. Use the yarn end that was left at the beginning of work. Insert hook in first stitch on the edge, yarn over and pull it through the stitch. Continue to work starting in this first stitch.

Row 1: ch 1, { 1 sc, ch 2, sk 1, (3 dc), ch 2, sk 1, 1 sc } 10 times.
Row 2: ch 1, insert hook in same stitch where last sc was worked, bring the yarn over hook and pull it through the stitch and through the loop on hook. Insert hook in next stitch on the edge (the one that was skipped on row 1), yarn over and pull it through the stitch and through the loop on hook. Insert hook in next stitch on the edge (the one with 3 dc), and continue to work slip stitches along the base of the lace in the same way.

Work cross stitch embroidery referring to the charts below, and finally sew up the sides of the mitten. Fasten off and weave in all ends.
