Designed by Dot Drake

Give a new mother a gift truly from the heart with this blanket and toy set. Just weave these textured pastel strips together easily using intertwined loops to join.

Finished Size
29" x 42 1/2", not including Fringe.

Materials

* Worsted yarn -- 14 oz. white, 11 oz. lilac, 11 oz. yellow, 7 oz. green
* 10 safety pins
* G hook or hook size needed to obtain gauge.

Gauge
We are not responsible for lack of materials due to project not being worked to gauge.
Gauge for this pattern: 10 sts = 3"
5 dc rows and 4 sc rows = 4".

Basic Stitches
Ch, sl st, sc, dc, tr

Special Stitch
For popcorn (pc), 5 dc in next st, drop lp from hook, insert hook in first st of 5-dc group, draw dropped lp through.

Lilac Strip (make 2)
Note: Ch lps at beginning of each row are to remain loose and unworked. They will be woven later.
Row 1: With lilac, ch 25, sl st in thirteenth ch from hook, sl st in each ch across, turn. (13 sl sts and one ch lp made)
Row 2: Ch 12, sc in each st across, turn.
Row 3: Ch 12, dc in first 6 sts, pc (see Special Stitch) in next st, dc in last 6 sts, turn.
Row 4: Ch 12, sc in each st across, turn.
Row 5: Ch 12, dc in next 2 sts, pc in next st, dc in next 7 sts, pc in next st, dc in last 2 sts, turn.
Row 6: Ch 12, sc in each st across, turn.
Rows 7-12: Repeat rows 3-6 consecutively, ending with row 4.
Row 13: Ch 12, dc in each st across, turn.
Row 14: Ch 12, sc in each st across, turn.
Row 15: Ch 12, dc in each st across, turn.
Rows 16-96: Repeat rows 2-15 consecutively, ending with row 12. At end of last row, fasten off.

Yellow Strip (make 2)
Row 1: With yellow, ch 25, sl st in thirteenth ch from hook, sl st in each ch across, turn. (13 sl sts, 1 ch lp)
Row 2: Ch 12, sc in each st across, turn.
Row 3: Ch 12, dc in each st across, turn.
Row 4: Ch 12, sc in each st across, turn.
Row 5: Ch 12, dc in first 4 sts, ch 4, sc around post of seventh dc on row before last, ch 4, skip next 5 sts on last row, dc in last 4 sts, turn.
Row 6: Ch 12, sc in first 4 sts, tr in next 5 skipped sts on row before last, sc in last 4 sts, turn.
Row 7: Ch 12, dc in each of first 4 sts, ch 4, sc around post of center tr on last row, ch 4, sk next 5 sts on last row, dc in each of last 4 sts, turn.
Row 8: Rep row 6.
Rows 9-96: Rep rows 7 and 8 alternately. At end of last row, fasten off.

Plain Strip (make 3 white and 2 green)
Row 1: Ch 18, sl st in thirteenth ch from hook, sl st in each ch across, turn. (6 sl sts, 1 ch lp)
Row 2: Ch 12, sc in each st across, turn.
Row 3: Ch 12, dc in each st across, turn.
Rows 4-95: Repeat rows 2 and 3 alternately.
Row 96: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Fasten off.

Joining
To begin, lay the Strips right side up on flat surface, such as a table, in the following order: white, yellow, green, lilac, white, yellow, green, lilac and white. Pull all ch lps to right side.
Starting with lps at bottom of first Strip on one outside edge, insert second lp into first lp, insert third lp into second lp, insert fourth lp into third lp continuing all the way up; secure last lp with safety pin. Repeat on opposite outside edge.
Starting with lps at bottom between two Strips, working back and forth vertically between Strips, weave lps together; secure last lp with safety pin. Repeat between all Strips.
Tack each top lp between Strips to Strip opposite lp. Tack each top lp on outside edges to last row.

Fringe
Working in sts and in chs across one short end, join white with sl st in first st, ch 13, sl st in third ch from hook, ch 11, sl st in same st, (sl st in next 2 sts, ch 13, sl st in third ch from hook, ch 11, sl st in same st) across to last 2 or 3 sts, sl st in last 2 or 3 sts, ch 13, sl st in third ch from hook, ch 11, sl st in same st as last sl st made. Fasten off.
Repeat on opposite short end.

Baby Chick

Finished Size
7 1/4" tall

Materials

* Worsted yarn -- 7 oz. white, 3 1/2 oz. lilac, small amount each yellow and green
* 2 blue pony beads (see Note below)
* Polyester fiberfill
* White sewing thread
* Sewing and tapestry needles
* H hook or hook size needed to obtain gauge.

Gauge

Gauge for this pattern: 7 sc = 2"
7 sc rows = 2".

Basic Stitches
Ch, sl st, sc, dc, tr

Note: If Chick will be given as a toy to a child, please do not use beads or buttons for eyes, but substitute a felt or embroidered eye.

Head & Body
Rnd 1: Starting at top of Head, with white, ch 4, 11 dc in fourth ch from hook, join with sl st in top of ch-3. (12 dc made)
Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st around, join with sl st in first sc. (24)
Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join.
Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in first st, 2 sc in next st, (sc in next st, 2 sc in next st) around, join. (36)
Rnds 5-10: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join.
Rnd 11: Ch 1, sc in first 2 sts, sc next 2 sts tog, (sc in next 2 sts, sc next 2 sts tog) around, join. (27)
Rnd 12: Ch 1, sc in first st, sc next 2 sts tog, (sc in next st, sc next 2 sts tog) around, join. (18)
Rnd 13: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join.
Rnd 14: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st around, join. (36)
Rnds 15-24: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join.
Rnd 25: Ch 1, sc in first st, (sc next 2 sts tog, sc in next 3 sts) around, join. (29) Turn inside out. Back of stitches is right side of work. Stuff.
Rnds 26-27: Ch 1, sc in first 2 sts, (sc next 2 sts tog, sc in next st) around, join. (20, 14)
Rnd 28: Ch 1, sc first 2 sts tog, (sc next 2 sts tog) around, join.
Fasten off. Sew opening closed.

Wing (make 2)
Row 1: With white, ch 4, 5 dc in fourth ch from hook, turn. (6 dc made)
Row 2: (Ch 3, dc) in first st, 2 dc in each of next 2 sts, dc in last 3 sts, turn. (9)
Row 3: (Ch 3, dc) in first st, dc in next 6 sts, dc last 2 sts tog, turn.
Row 4: Ch 3, dc next 2 sts tog, dc in next 3 sts, dc next 2 sts tog leaving last st unworked, turn. (6)
Row 5: Ch 2 (ch 2 is not used or counted as a st), dc in next st, (dc next 2 sts tog) 2 times, turn. (3)
Row 6: For tip, ch 2, yo, insert hook in first st, yo, draw lp through, yo, draw through 2 lps on hook, (yo, insert hook in next st, yo, draw lp through, yo, draw through 2 lps on hook) 2 times, yo, draw through all 4 lps on hook. Fasten off.
Sew one Wing to rnd 14 on each side of Body.

Foot (make 2)
Row 1: With yellow, ch 5, sc in second ch from hook, sc in each ch across, turn. (4 sc made)
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.
Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each st across with 2 sc in last st, turn. (5)
Row 4: Ch 4, sc in fourth ch from hook, sc in first 2 sts on last row, ch 4, sc in fourth ch from hook, sc in next 2 sts on last row, ch 4, sc in fourth ch from hook, sc in last st on last row. Fasten off.
Sew Feet to bottom of Body spaced 3/8" apart.

Beak side (make 2)
Row 1: With yellow, ch 5, sc in second ch from hook, sc in each ch across, turn. (4 sc made)
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.
Rnd 3: Working in rnds, ch 1, sc in each st and in end of each row around, join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off.
For center seam, sew straight edge of last rnd on each piece together.
Sew center seam to rnd 9 on center front of Head.
For eyes, sew beads between rnds 6 and 7 centered above Beak spaced 7/8" apart.

Bonnet
Row 1: With lilac, ch 11, dc in fourth ch from hook, dc in each ch across, turn. (9 dc made)
Row 2: Ch 1, (sc, tr) in first st, (sc, tr) in next 8 sts; working in starting ch on opposite side of row 1, (sc, tr) in next 8 chs, sc in last ch, turn. (35 sts)
Row 3: Ch 1, sc in first st, (ch 2, skip next st, sc in next st) across, turn. (17 ch sps)
Rows 4-6: Ch 1, sc in first ch sp, (ch 2, sc in next ch sp) across, turn, ending with 14 ch sps in last row.
Rows 7-8: Ch 1, sc in first ch sp, (ch 2, sc in next ch sp) across, ch 2, sc in last sc, turn.
Row 9: Ch 1, sc in each st and 2 sc in each ch sp across, turn. (43 sc)
Row 10: Ch 6, sc in third ch from hook, skip next st, dc in next st, (ch 3, sc in third ch from hook, skip next st, dc in next st) across, do not turn.
For edging, working in ends of rows across bottom of Bonnet, ch 1, 2 sc around side of last dc, sl st in each row across to last row on opposite side, 2 sc in last row, sl st in third ch of ch-6. Fasten off.
For drawstring, with green, ch 75. Fasten off. Weave through dc of last row. Knot ends. Place Bonnet on Chick and tie drawstring ends into a bow under Beak.
