Polymer clay foil decoration with tutorial |
i was thinking how i used to make christmas decorations as a child with shapes cut from tin foil and an old biro which never lasted from one year to the next. i'd seen more durable decoration made from thicker craft foils but it was something id never done as a child. this was something in the way of a nostalgic muck around and a good use for scrap clay
to make a pendant or tree hanger i added a few jump rings to the 'frame' though you could make a hole in the scrap clay shape first and punch through the foil instead.
i added a brooch back to this piece.
first cut a shape from scrap clay (you could use cookie cutters) and cut a piece of kitchen/baking foil slightly bigger than your shape.
smear a little liquid clay onto the shape (including the sides) with your finger. this helps to stop the foil slipping and sliding while you work.
place your foil over the shape and smooth it down with your finger.
you can do this free hand or transfer your chosen design to tracing paper. if your using tracing paper you may find it easier to tape the design in place while you work with masking tape
with a small knitting needle or cocktail stick indent your design. dont use anything sharp or you will rip the foil.
when your design is completed carefully trim away the excess foil and smooth down the sides
bake the piece at the manufactures recommended temperature.
add frame or additional decoration as desired and bake again.
as always advice or comments are more than welcome.
