Gabriel Meiring |
Gabriël Meiring was born in 1946, Johannesburg, South Africa. He started his education as a concert pianist in Pretoria, then moved to Europe to complete his music studies. Drawn into the art of painting by a friend, Meiring taught himself various drawing and painting techniques over the years. In 1975 his first exhibition took place in Belgium, where he had taken up his residence. More shows followed in de rest of Europe, the United States and Japan.
Meiring has, literally at his fingertips, a magical combination of power and poetry, sense and sensibility. His work is imbued with emotion and spiritual content. He creates a superb balance between colour, phantasy and a gracious style with acryllic paint, thus creating elegance and decorative harmony. His subject is the emotional space of his own inner world or in the case of children's portraits, that of the sitters. His love for decorative painting extends to fields far apart, such as murals, stained glass, porcelain, furniture and grand pianos. Guided by his feeling for splendid textiles in combination with his murals or decorative panels, he is able to turn your home into the palace of your dreams.
Although Art Nouveau and the Vienna Secession are important to him as sources of grace inspired by nature, his own fantasy and the world of patterns before his mind's eye lead to a typical visual poetry of his own. The richness of the painted surfaces, with ample use of gold and silver and his innate feeling for elegance and detail, give his paintings a luxurious and classic radiance.
