Left: The worked oval motif.
Right: The pattern.
A square (or circle) round a
pin on a pattern indicates a
raised tally.

Techniques introduced: Raised and overlaid tallies.
Thread: Both oval motif and butterfly were worked with DMC broder machine 50. The motif required twenty-five pairs, and the butterfly up to fifty pairs.

Start the oval in a similar way to the bookmark in Pattern 6, but with extra passives.

Add a single pair at B – hang the new pair on pin B, twist worker, work cloth stitch with the new pair, twist worker and continue the trail adding two pairs for a plait at C (leave pin B in place under the added pair).

Work in a similar way on the left, adding a pair at D and two pairs at E. Twist the pairs at B and D, plait to F, and hang a pair on pin F between the plait pairs.

Work the half-stitch bud taking in plaits from C and E, and leave the worker at G.

The raised tally is worked next:
Working the raised tally.

Stage 1. Place a pin between the third and fourth passive pairs, twist both pairs twice and work a tally that is about twice as long as it is wide. Twist both pairs twice to finish and take out the pin.

Stage 2. (a) For a simple raised tally, slide a long pin under the tally, then lift it and place it behind two pins in the lace. Replace the central pin below the tally before completing the half-stitch bud. (b) For a rolled raised tally, place a long pin over the tally and take the tally pairs over and under the pin at each side. Lift the pin behind two pins as in (a) and pull gently on the threads to roll up the tally. Replace the central pin and complete the half-stitch bud.

***
After finishing the first half-stitch bud, work a three-pair plait to H by treating two of the pairs as single threads.

Work the outer trail adding pairs for plaits at I, J, K and L, and then work the plaits needed for the central half-stitch bud. At M take in two plait pairs, add a pair, work back through one pair and put aside the next two pairs ready to work an overlaid tally before working to N.

Take in two plait pairs and add a pair at N, work back through one pair and put aside the next two pairs for an overlaid tally, before leaving the worker pair at O.

***
Work the tallies from M and N, put them aside and continue working from O to P, taking in the plaits from K and L, and leaving the worker at P.

Bring the tallies back over the half stitch and work a windmill crossing, followed by tallies to Q and R.
Put the tallies aside, work from P to Q, place the right-hand tally pairs inside the edge passive and work to R where the left-hand tally pairs are placed inside the edge passive before working back from R.

Three pairs are left out at Q and R, two pairs for plaits at each of the next two pins, leaving three pairs to work a three-pair plait from S.

***
Work three-pair plaits from Q and R but discard the extra pair, one bobbin at a time, before linking to the outer trail. Work the second half-stitch bud in the same way as the first. Continue working the outer trails taking in plaits and discarding threads from the trail and finish the motif either with or without a tassel, as with the bookmark in Pattern 6.
Points to note about working raised tallies
Simple raised tallies can be pushed through to the other side of the lace later – make them if you want the underside to be the right side.
Rolled raised tallies can be neater and tighter but they are fixed on the side where they are made – only make them if the upper side of the lace is to be the right side (as is traditional in Bedfordshire lace).
For central tallies where there is an odd number of passive pairs, use the central pair and one thread from each side.

Points to note about working overlaid tallies
As the pairs taken out for the tallies do not return to the cloth or half stitch immediately, it is often necessary to add extra pairs, here at N and M, to fill out the background.
If the underside is to be the right side of the lace, the tallies must be worked under the half stitch – the tally at M before working to N, and the tally at N before working to O. Work the windmill crossing and the tallies to Q and R, then work over the tallies and take in the pairs after pins Q and R.
