Here a step-by-step tutorial which I hope will inspire you to DIY tie dye your own fabrics (or other items of clothing). You will need fabric or a piece of clothing (cotton and silk work best), reactive fabric dye which is best for beginners like me, squirt bottles which you can purchase at your local craft store, garbage bags and rubber or plastic gloves.

1. Once you have chosen your fabric (or item of clothing) put it in the wash so it’s clean and damp. During this time, lay out garbage bags – especially if you are DIY’ing indoors and stay away from carpet wherever possible. You don’t want to go all Pro Hart on your carpet! In may case, I laid out about 6 or 7 garbage bags on the tiled floor in our conservatory. Lay your damp fabric onto the garbage bags and scrunch the fabric together with your fingertips.

2. Once your fabric is happily scrunched, grab your darkest colour and shake over the fabric so the dye splatters all over it. Repeat with your other two colours. This part is really fun. When you are happy with the coverage of dye on your damp fabric, leave it to dry for 6 to 8 hours.

3. Once the fabric is dry, you can use the fabric to DIY a maxi skirt like I have done. Or something even more exciting than my boring DIY maxi skirt! And remember to wash your fabric after it’s dry to ensure the colour stays bright and tight.

There are so many different ways to tie dye, you can even use rubber bands to create various patterns such as strips, swirls, circles and sunbursts. Even if you use the same technique, you’ll never get the same design twice. So good! And it’s safe to say I’m a little addicted to tie dye now! I’ve got a white tee, a pair of white socks and a white silk blouse on my list this weekend. I’ll make sure I do an outfit post soon too, I promise.
