Toyota projects its annual profit to fall by 80%

Пятница, 15 Мая 2020 г. 05:21 + в цитатник

The impact of the novel coronavirus has severely dented global demand for vehicles. Toyota Motor Corp, one of the world’s most profitable carmakers, expects its annual operating profit to plunge by 80%, its lowest figure in nine years. Even such a giant car manufacturer has fallen prey to the coronavirus-driven crisis.

Japan's biggest automaker warns that its losses may total 1.5 trillion yen ($13.95bn) due to a drop in global vehicle sales this year. The company points out that the coronavirus delivered a bigger shock to the car industry than the global financial crisis of 2008.

"We anticipate a big drop in sales volumes, but despite that we are expecting to remain in the black," Toyota President Akio Toyoda reported. The company supposes that in the near future, car sales will get back on track. Under such a scenario, Toyota will significantly minimize its net operating losses.

Japan's automaker expects to sell 8.9 million vehicles globally versus 10.46 million in the previous year. According to preliminary estimates, the company lost 160 billion yen in operating profit due to the pandemic.

However, despite the reduction in profit and a sharp decrease in margins, Toyota plans to allocate more than 1 trillion yen for capital expenditures and investment in innovative developments.

Russia losing competitive advantage in global oil market

Четверг, 14 Мая 2020 г. 06:38 + в цитатник

Russia’s oil exports have been badly affected by the coronavirus-driven economic crisis. Urals, Russia’s main export oil grade, surpassed the price of the world’s benchmark Brent for the first time this year. As a rule, Urals has always traded below Brent crude oil and even the North American WTI. Apart from reduced demand for energy, the Russian crude has fallen prey to an aggressive marketing strategy of Saudi Arabia. As a result, Russia had to put a higher price tag on its Urals blend. Last time, such a differential was seen in late November 2019. Experts say this is not the long-term trend. In fact, Moscow was forced to respond this way to low demand for the Russian oil grades. In other words, the Urals price just looks inflated compared to invoices issued by other oil exporters who slashed prices wooing large buyers. Oil producing countries aim to squeeze out the powerful competitor of traditional markets in Europe and Asia.

Meanwhile, Russian energy companies are not able to compete with other oil suppliers. At present, Russian drillers find it cheaper to burn the oil which has been extracted than deliver it to storage facilities. Russia trimmed the Urals delivery plan by 40% for May compared to April. So, this month Russia is going to supply the volume of less than 1 million barrels per day. Such a crater in supplies is caused by low demand for energy as well as Russia’s commitments to the OPEC+ pact on oil production cuts.

Buffett’s Berkshire reports massive $50 billion loss

Среда, 13 Мая 2020 г. 05:24 + в цитатник

Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc has been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic. Recently, the conglomerate posted a record net loss of nearly $50 billion in the first quarter of 2020. Amid the coronavirus-driven crisis, Berkshire had to find new ways of making profit. Previously, Warren Buffett supported the strategy of stocking up on cheap shares hoping that they will increase in value in the future. However, today the company is selling stocks and prefers to build up cash instead of buying the new ones. According to the company’s balance sheet, it spent just $3.5 billion on investments and had $137 billion in cash which is $10 billion up from last year. First of all, Buffett decided to sell his entire stake in the four largest US airlines: United Airlines, Delta Airlines, American Airlines, and Southwest Airlines. This decision is not surprising since the airline industry has been severely hurt by a forced shutdown due to the coronavirus outbreak. "The value of certain things has decreased," Warren Buffett said. "Our airline position was a mistake. Berkshire is worth less today because I took that position. There are other decisions like that." The billionaire investor stressed that today’s crisis in the stock markets is unprecedented and therefore requires new strategies.

6 Ways Volcanoes Benefit Earth

Среда, 13 Мая 2020 г. 02:06 + в цитатник

Usually, volcanoes are associated with mortal threats and total destruction. People prefer to live as far as possible from them as volcanoes are unpredictable and can erupt at any time. However, very few people are aware of the fact that volcanoes are quite beneficial for the environment and nature. Find out in our article how volcanic activity can positively impact our planet

Volcanic Ash
Volcanic ash formed during explosive volcanic eruptions is quite essential for the Earth. It is often used as a fertilizer. Volcanic ash contains minerals that are beneficial for plants. Volcanic materials are mixed in with the soil quite quickly, owing to its special composition with particles of dust and sand. In Indonesia, Japan, Italy, and the Philippines, farmers living near volcanoes use volcanic ash as fertilizer.

Preservation Of Flora And Fauna
You may be surprised but one of the most crucial advantages of volcanoes on the planet is the inaccessibility of their slopes. Apparently, not every traveler dares to walk near the volcanic slopes and crevices, as well as hunt and collect plants. Thus, many unique species of plants and animals are safe thanks to the volcano's remote and inaccessible location.

Volcanic Gas
Ecologists believe that volcanic gases are another gift of volcanoes for the planet Earth. Volcanic gases accelerate the process of water entering the atmosphere and participate in its formation. Remarkably, the oceans are also the products of volcanic activity. Volcanoes are a kind of exhaust-pipe system for the accumulating gasses to escape. They contribute to the cooling of the earth's core, scientists say.

Formation Of Volcanic Islands
It is well-known that people often settle down near the areas of extinct volcanoes. However, few of them know that due to the elements released during the eruption, a whole island can be formed. For example, Nishinoshima in Japan is one of such islands. Curiously enough, when volcanoes erupt, the area of the continents increases.

Building Materials
Products of volcanic eruptions are often used in construction. Volcanic deposits are also used as a raw building material. Minerals of volcanic origin such as basalt and aphanite are applied for the production of crushed stone. They have a high density and therefore concrete shields of a nuclear reactor are usually made from them. Pumice, volcanic ash, and perlite are also used in manufacturing and construction.

Energy Saving
Volcanic heat can also be used for the generation of green energy. According to scientists’ calculations, the electric and thermal potential of the Avacha-Koryak group of volcanoes in Russia will total about 6 thousand Gcal per hour. This will fully meet the need for thermal energy in the cities of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and Elizovo, experts summarize.

Coronavirus crisis curtails consumer spending and slows inflation in France

Вторник, 12 Мая 2020 г. 10:21 + в цитатник

The COVID-19 pandemic has had an enormous negative impact on the global economy. Analysts estimate that Europe is the worst-hit region, the Italian and French economies in particular.

Last month, the annual inflation rate in France measured by the consumer price index (CPI) edged up by 0.4%. According to the National Statistics Office Insee, in March 2020, consumer prices increased by 0,7%. Experts at Insee pointed to a sharp slowdown in the country's inflation amid lower energy prices.

During the reporting period, food prices in France rose by 3.7% year-on-year. At the same time, energy prices and prices for manufactured goods went down by 8.5% and 0.4%, respectively. The service sector also saw an increase in costs by 0.7%.

In addition, Insee reported that in April, French consumer prices measured by EU-harmonized standards grew by 0.5%. The result fell short of expectations for a 0.2% gain. The National Statistics Office noted that in March 2020, household consumption expenditure on goods in France tumbled 17.9% from February. This is the strongest decrease ever recorded since the beginning of the time series, experts emphasize.

In March this year, French food consumption increased by 7.8%, surpassing the figure for February, while energy costs dropped by 11.4%. Spending on durable goods sank the most - by 48.8%, the agency noted.

Deadliest pandemics in human history

Вторник, 12 Мая 2020 г. 02:02 + в цитатник

COVID-19 is the eighteenth pandemic in the history of humankind. The culprit is the 2019-nCoV virus and, unfortunately, people are not immune to it.

Same as before, the most effective way of preventing the spread of a virus during a pandemic period is to isolate sick and potentially infected people. In other words, to introduce quarantine measures. Read about the worst pandemics in history in our article

Plague of Justinian
The Plague of Justinian was a pandemic that erupted during the reign of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I. The disease is considered to be the first pandemic in history. The plague returned periodically during 6-8 centuries AD.
According to historians, the plague moved from Ethiopia to Egypt and reached Constantinople. The main carriers of the infection were fleas that lived in the wool of ship rats.
Traces of the Justinian plague have been found in South Africa, Arabia, Asia, and Europe. The disease affected the whole civilized world of that time. Various estimates indicate that the Justinian plague killed almost a third part of the world's population, that is from 90 to 150 million people.

Bubonic plague
The Black Death was the second plague pandemic which took place in the 14th century. The major symptoms of the plague were a severe general health condition, fever, lymph node, pulmonary, and other organs involvement, as well as sepsis. The main cause of the spread of bubonic plague was fleas living on rats.
The Black Death travelled to Europe from Africa, India, and China. It killed half of the European population. Later, there were several minor plague outbreaks on the territory of Europe.
Bubonic plague was completely defeated only in 1947 after the invention of streptomycin. The antibiotic was successfully tested during the outbreak of the plague in Manchuria.

Cholera
Cholera is a diarrhoeal disease that became widely known during global climate change that occurred after the eruption of Mount Tambora in 1815.
The effect of a volcanic winter triggered a mutation of the bacteria Vibrio cholerae and caused several epidemics. Thus, cholera came to Russia in 1830-1831. It is believed that the second wave of epidemic originated from the Ganges Delta in India. Seven cholera pandemics have been recorded so far.
Nowadays, cholera is considered to be an endemic disease which can be encountered only in countries with the low level of social development and limited access to clean water and sanitation.

Spanish flu
The Spanish flu was a pandemic that came to Europe from the Iberian Peninsula. The deadly influenza erupted in Europe right during the time of World War I. On the front line, the situation was aggravated by poor nutrition, lack of basic hygiene and necessary medicines. People at the age of 20-45 were the main victims of the Spanish flu.
In 1918, the virus took hold of the entire planet making the disease one of the deadliest pandemics in human history. According to estimates, the influenza killed around 100 million people for 18 months.
Influenza A virus which is a strain of the Spanish flu caused the 2007 avian flu and the 2009 swine flu pandemics.

Smallpox
The exact origin of smallpox is unknown. Presumably, the Middle East was the center of the outbreak.
The first pandemic hit China in the 4th century AD. The following waves of the epidemic occurred in Korea and Japan. During Islamic conquests in the 7-8 centuries, smallpox spread from Spain to India. The disease moved to Europe during the Norman invasion of Paris in the 9th century and continued its march around the world. In the 17–18 centuries, smallpox raged in Europe and Russia, killing several million people per year.
The disease was dangerous not only because of severe course but also its complications, such as extensive scarring of skin and loss of vision. In 1928, smallpox was defeated with the invention of a vaccine.

HIV
The spread of HIV was declared a pandemic in 1981. As of today, around 25 million people have died from acquired immunodeficiency syndrome around the world.
According to the latest UNAIDS report, Eastern Europe and Central Asia are the world’s regions where the HIV epidemic continues to spread rapidly.
However, the situation in other parts of the globe does not get any better. The problem with the spread of the HIV pandemic remains acute and still requires funding for drug purchasing and implementation of preventive measures.

Cryptocurrency market recovering from coronavirus crash

Понедельник, 11 Мая 2020 г. 05:12 + в цитатник

The cryptocurrency market managed to recover from the first blow from the coronavirus. Recall that when the pandemic broke out, Bitcoin as well as the whole crypto market capitalization tumbled. The world's largest cryptocurrency fell sharply to $3,800 from $9,500. However, digital currencies were able to regain their previous losses. Bitcoin which accounts for most of all crypto activity showed record gains in one day. As a result, the entire market capitalization increased by $35.3 billion to $160 billion. This rise stems from several factors, the major of which is the policy of the leading financial regulators. The coronavirus pandemic forced them to revise their monetary policy. The quantitative easing programs launched around the world, “easy money” pumped into the economy, and other stimulus measures became drivers for cryptocurrencies' growth. According to CoinDesk, Bitcoin's price surge above $9,000 made mining profitable again. In general, the demand for cryptocurrencies soared up. Moreover, some trading floors hit record trading volumes. Other virtual currencies did not lag behind Bitcoin: Ethereum was up by 14%, Bitcoin Cash - by 12%, and Ripple - by 9%.

Famous insider trading cases

Понедельник, 11 Мая 2020 г. 02:51 + в цитатник

Insider trading in the US has been a part of the market since 18 century. As a result, numerous traders and bankers got rich. However, similar incidents occasionally lead to scandals.

Read about famous insider trading cases in our photo gallery

The Wall Street Journal/R. Foster Winans

R. Foster Winans had been a columnist for The Wall Street Journal for three years. He was convicted of insider trading and mail fraud.
In 1985, he was accused of giving information to two stockbrokers about stocks he was planning to write about in his column. Traders used this information and earned about $690 thousand. Winans’ cut was $31 thousand.
As a result, Winans was sentenced to 18 months in prison. Other conspirators were also convicted.

ENRON/JEFFREY SKILLING
Jeffrey Skilling, the former Enron president, became the most famous business criminal who managed to serve his sentence and get out of jail.
Skilling was indicted on 35 cases of fraud, insider trading, and other crimes related to the Enron scandal.
Skilling pleaded not guilty of all charges. However, prosecution managed to bring Skilling to justice when he sold almost $60 million of Enron's shares after quitting the company.
Prosecutors said that Jeffrey knew about the company's imminent insolvency and used this against all laws on foreign exchange operations.
As a result, Skilling was sentenced to 292 months in prison.

IVAN BOESKY
Ivan Boesky, a son of a Russian immigrant, became one of the wealthiest people in the US thanks to insider information. However, shocking trading scandal that occurred in 1986 completely ruined his reputation.
Boesky’s company was engaged in insider trading. Using both public and insider information, Boesky found corporate takeovers and bought their shares shortly before the release of public information. Then, he sold the shares a few days before corporations announced a takeover.
Boesky’s success attracted attention of the US Securities and Exchange Commission. In 1986, the prosecution revealed that Boesky was passing insider information to Dennis B. Levine, a managing director of Drexel Burnham Lambert, who was taken into custody in May. Boesky had been under surveillance since that day.

In 1986, federal investigators offered Boesky a secret agreement instead of a longtime prison term. According to the agreement, Boesky was forbidden from security trading for life. Moreover, he had to uncover other traders who used takeover information for illegal purposes.
As a result, Boesky met dozens of his former partners in crime with a listening device attached to him. In the aftermath, 14 traders were arrested.

Business Week
In 1990, printing company worker William Jackson and stockbroker Brian Callahan were convicted of using stock information in Business Week magazine before it was distributed to the public.
According to the Court, Jackson and Callahan made over $19 thousand each. As a result, they had to pay $37,445.

GALLEON GROUP/RAJ RAJARATNAM
The District Court of New York convicted former billionaire and the head of the hedge fund firm Galleon Group of insider trading.
Once a successful billionaire and the hedge fund manager of the Galleon Group, Raj Rajaratnam, was found guilty of conspiracy and securities fraud by the District Court of New York.
According to the Court, the billionaire had been using insider information he received from executives, bankers, traders, and directors of such companies as Goldman Sachs, Intel, and Hilton Hotels for seven years.
As a result, Rajaratnam made some $45 million. On May 11, 2011, he was sentenced to 11 years in prison.

KEEFE, BRUYETTE & WOODS/MCDERMOTT JR.
James McDermott Jr., CEO of investment bank Keefe, Bruyette & Woods, was convinced of insider trading in 2000.
He gave the information about pending bank merger to his mistress Marilyn Star, an adult-movie actress.
McDermott Jr. was sentenced to 8 months in prison. His mistress received a 3-months term. Moreover, McDermott Jr. was ordered to pay a fine of $25 thousand.

ImClone
Former ImClone CEO Samuel Waksal was sentenced to 87 months in prison and paid $3 million after he was found guilty of insider trading and fraud.
ImClone developed a new type of cancer drug, Erbitux. However, regulators rejected the application. Despite this fact, Samuel Waksal sold the company’s stock. Later, the drug was approved.

SAC GROUP/STEVEN A. COHEN
Steven Cohen is the founder of SAC Capital Partners. He became known for his phenomenal ability to make money regardless of market conditions. BusinessWeek called Cohen the most influential trader on Wall Street.
Cohen had been closely watched by the US Attorney Office and regulatory authorities for a couple of years. The investigation of the SAC Capital case became one of the major and long-term processes in the history of Wall Street. The first suspicions among regulators and prosecutors arose more than ten years ago.

However, the SEC was the only government department that dared to publicly accuse Steven Cohen. The company was accused of encouraging its employees to insider trading since 1999 and ignoring signs of illegitimacy of such practice. Several cases of fraud and insider trading were uncovered.

According to the SEC, SAC Capital illegally earned more than $275 million on insider trading.

In November 2013, the hedge fund SAC Capital pleaded guilty to securities fraud as part of the insider trading case and agreed to pay a record $1.8 billion. At the same time, New York District Attorney announced that SAC Capital would stop its investment consulting activity.

8 rarest astronomical events

Воскресенье, 10 Мая 2020 г. 02:51 + в цитатник

Astronomers believe that the number of rare and unique events in the world is going to increase. Constant and invisible to the human eye planetary motion, gravitational force and evolution of celestial bodies are the cause of the phenomena. Read more about eight rarest astronomical events

Total solar eclipse

A total solar eclipse is seen very rarely. It differs from the usual one which is observed several times a year. When a total solar eclipse occurs, the Moon blocks the Sun completely. It can be observed from the Earth. For the last time, the total solar eclipse was recorded in Novembers 2012. Scientists estimate it will not happen for the next 138 years.

The Transit of Venus

A transition is observed when Venus passes directly between the Sun and the Earth. Only a small portion of the solar-disc is covered. Venues looks like a tiny black dot moving across the Sun. The event repeats every 8 years. For the last 11o years, the planet runs along the same trajectory. The last transit of Venus was in 2012

Planetary Alignment
The phenomenon is one of the rarest astronomical events. According to scientific research, the next alignment of celestial objects including Mars, Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn and the Moon will occur in 2040. The alignment of the five planets (Mars, Saturn, Venus, Mercury, and Jupiter) was recorded in 2000. The alignment of Jupiter, Mercury, and Venus happened in 2011.

Comet ISON
Comet ISON, a sungrazing celestial body, is a unique event. It originated from the Oort cloud at the edge of the Solar System. Scientists consider it the brightest comet of the first half of the 19th century. It was discovered by two Russian astronomers on September 12, 2012. In November 2013, the comet split into two parts. According to estimated data, ISON flew 3.5 billion years before reaching the Sun. Its weight was constantly growing due to the accumulation of dust particles. The comet collapsed at a distance of 1 million km to the Sun.

Halley’s comet
The periodic appearance of Halley's comet is the most interesting of the rare astronomical phenomena. It returns to the Sun every 75 years. The celestial body was named after the English astronomer Edmund Halley, who discovered it in 1531. The comet moves around the elliptical orbit. It is one of the brightest in the Solar System. Halley's comet is visible to the human eye. Its dimensions are 14 km long and 8 km wide. The last time the object passed near the Sun was in 1986, and the next appearance is expected in 2061.

Comet Hale–Bopp
Experts consider the Hale-Bopp comet to be the brightest celestial body. It is 1000 times more intense than Halley's comet. The comet is visible from the Earth. It is estimated that the period of its circulation around the Sun is 2392 years. Comet Hale–Bopp was discovered by American astronomers Alan Hale and Thomas Bopp on July 23, 1995. Its closest distance to Earth is 193 million km. The comet movement is extremely difficult to predict. The orbit is constantly shifting, so it is not an easy task to foresee the flight path of the celestial body.

The Leonids
The Leonid meteor shower occurs at the intersection of the Earth and the orbit of Tempel-Tuttle comet. This spectacular meteor storms happens every 33 years. The Leonids are characterized by a huge number of meteors flying through the atmosphere. Their number reaches 100 thousand. The most powerful meteor storms were recorded in 1833.

67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko

In comparison with Hale-Bopp comet, 67P/C–G‘s trajectory is more easily to predict. It travels around the Sun in six years. The comet was discovered in 1969. Its trajectory is under the gravitational influence of Jupiter. There are ice formations on the surface of 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko comet which turn into steam with dust particles as it approaches the Sun. The comet falls under the influence of Neptune’s gravitational force when passing near the planet.

8 revolutionary furniture items

Суббота, 09 Мая 2020 г. 02:28 + в цитатник

Lots of household items broke out into the world of design like a sensation making people see everyday things from a different angle. At present, they are still found in apartments around the world. Let's find out the classical items of a modern dwelling.

Lounge chair by Le Corbusier

A comfortable and practical lounge chair was invented in 1929 by three designers: Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, and Charlotte Perriand. In the course of time, this item of furniture was referred to by the name of the first designer. These long armchairs still enjoy popularity, though they were taken by the public with a pinch of salt.

Vienna chair

The Thonet factory still manufactures chairs which look like the legendary Vienna chair, though the modern models have a slightly different design. The original model was created 150 years ago. The design of such chairs is distinguished by gracefully curved legs and a back. Nowadays, well-off people still prefer to furnish their houses with such classical and elegant chairs.

Barcelona style armchair
The armchair of this style was rolled out in 1929. The best contemporary designers still admire the invention of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. The comfortable seat fits in lightweight seamless metal frames which make up steady criss-cross legs. The Barcelona style armchairs are in big demand among modern consumers.

Arco floor lamp
The famous curved floor lamp Arco was designed in 1962 for the Italian manufacturer Flos. It still can be found in any modern apartment. To meet the demand, other manufacturers duplicate the Arco classical design. People immediately appreciated the practical shape of this floor lamp. It is still considered perfect.

Plates by Fornasetti
Renowned designer Piero Fornasetti created his own art in home design full of illusions, magic images, and bizarre fantasies. Among accessories, the author came up with unique tableware, including plates. His imagination invented over 350 models of ceramic plates, all of them bearing the portrait of Italian singer Lina Cavalieri. Exquisite home accessories still attract buyers with a sophisticated taste.

Bean bag chair
This piece of furniture is extremely popular nowadays, though it was introduced in 1968 by Zanotta. These chairs have been in constant production since their original release. Bean bag chairs are stuffed with various materials. Their upholstery is made in plenty of colors, so that they can brighten up any children’s room.

Whistling kettle
Alessi kitchenware company created a whistling kettle in 1983. It was cast in a particular hemispheric shape. Interestingly, a kettle’s whistle was invented in 1930-s in the US. However, a hemispheric shape of a kettle made it a best-seller around the world. Designers also admire the flawless shape of the kettle.

Taraxacum lamp
It is the most popular pendant lamp with an iconic shape. It consists of several aluminum triangles with plenty of light bulbs housed around the structure which make up a round shape of a flower. Some one nicknames it a dandelion. For others, the lamp resembles curly hair. Modern designers play with this idea, for example replacing round lamps with ones of a different shape. Nevertheless, the basic concept is a ball-like lamp created by Italian designer Achille Castiglioni.

Booming Tesla stocks to bring Elon Musk closer to $750 million payout

Пятница, 08 Мая 2020 г. 06:14 + в цитатник

The stocks of the electric car maker Tesla will soon surge in popularity, market analysts predict. The possible high revenue from Tesla stock options may confirm these forecasts. It is estimated that Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk can now qualify for $750 million in stock options after the company’s shares have recovered from a slump caused by the coronavirus and lockdown measures. Shares of Tesla surged by 10% last Monday on April 20 ahead of the company’s quarterly report. The Monday rally placed Tesla's market capitalization at $145 billion. Notably, it is very important for Elon Musk to get profit from the options as he receives no salary or cash bonuses. His earnings fully depend on options that vest based on the market capitalization of the company. At the moment, Tesla’s stock market value has reached a six-month average of $96 billion. Hitting a six-month market capitalization of $100 billion will mean that the company’s CEO could get the first of 12 tranches of options granted to the billionaire to buy Tesla stocks. Each of the 12 tranches in the compensation package allows Musk to buy 1.69 million Tesla shares at $350.02 each. Those shares can be used to make a big profit. For instance, on April 20, the automaker‘s stocks closed with a spike to $798.75 per share. Musk could sell those shares and get a reward worth $758 million.Today, the full payout for Musk, who is also the majority shareholder and the CEO of the SpaceX rocket maker, may become the largest among the major US entrepreneurs. Analysts expect to see Tesla’s first-quarter revenue jump by 30% to $5.9 billion. However, the company may have incurred some losses due to a drop in demand for electric cars amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

4 medical innovations to expect in next 50 years

Пятница, 08 Мая 2020 г. 02:21 + в цитатник

Nowadays, medicine is rapidly developing, and specialists are looking for innovative ways to combat various diseases. The past century has seen many unique discoveries in this field: humanity has eradicated smallpox and has mastered organ transplantation.

There is still a long way ahead for the scientists to achieve new medical breakthroughs. The latest technologies in medicine make it possible to save thousands of lives daily. In our photo gallery, read about 4 medical advances to look forward to in the next 50 years.

Saving premature babies
According to statistics, only 10% of infants in the US are born premature. By contrast in Russia, the number of preterm delivery and newborn mortality is much higher. Medical specialists around the world are working on the solution to tackle this problem and improve the sad statistics.
In 2017, scientists from the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia created an artificial womb to support the development of early born lambs. As the research results showed, the fetus located inside the artificial uterus for 4 weeks displayed positive changes. In the future, these technologies can be applied to premature babies.

Reducing the shortage of donor organs
Currently, there is an acute shortage of donor organs all over the world which is also a reason for increased mortality. To solve this problem, scientists are trying to grow human organs within the pig’s embryos. These animals have organs similar to humans in size and shape. Besides, pig’s organs develop faster than the human ones. At the same time, it is very difficult for cells of one species to take root in another species organism.
In 2016, scientists managed to grow human stem cells inside a pig embryo. This achievement became a real breakthrough in medicine.

Repairing damaged organs with plants
Recently, scientists from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in Massachusetts made a breakthrough step in modern medicine. A team of specialists managed to grow blood vessels from spinach leaves that were able to transport water. After that, the plant cells were replaced with muscle cells from the human heart. In this way, it enabled the plant veins to pump water as they would do it in the real heart.
This discovery gives hope that in the nearest future it will be possible to treat damaged organs with plants, from spinach to broccoli, instead of transplanting them.

Regeneration
Regeneration of the living tissue is another ambitious goal of modern medicine. Every year, 185 thousand amputations are carried out in the United States. The field of prosthetics is rapidly developing now which allows people to use nano-technological prostheses that fully replace the lost limb.
However, scientists want to take a step further. In particular, they have paid special attention to animals, such as axolotl, with the ability to regenerate new parts of their body, including limbs, lungs, and even eyes. Scientists have already identified the genes responsible for regeneration ability in these animals. Perhaps, one day it will be possible to create a medicine that stimulates tissue growth in humans.

OP blames China for coronavirus

Четверг, 07 Мая 2020 г. 10:09 + в цитатник

Representatives of the US Republican party usually call things by their right names whereas Democrats got used to ambiguous wording. In case of the coronavirus, Democrats are just hinting that China’s actions have resulted in a deadly threat to the whole world. At the same time, their opponents are ratcheting up efforts to paint China as the villain in the coronavirus pandemic. Republicans are expected to “push for sanctions on China for its role in spreading this pandemic.” Taking into account the fact that the US presidential race has almost begun, the Republican party is likely to base their campaign on accusations against China and Democrats who are too “soft on China.”

At the same time, according to the methodological plan, it is necessary that voters clearly understand the difference between issues of national security and racism. “No one is blaming Chinese Americans. This is the fault of the Chinese Communist Party for covering up the virus and lying about its danger. This caused the pandemic and they should be held accountable,” the memorandum says.

“No one has suffered more from the murderous Communist Chinese Party dictatorship than the people of China,” the memo adds. “We stand with them against their corrupt government that caused this pandemic.”

World’s 5 crypto-friendly countries

Четверг, 07 Мая 2020 г. 02:14 + в цитатник

Nowadays, many nations are striving to introduce digital assets into a traditional financial system. Some countries pay special attention to the development of legal initiatives in order to legalize cryptocurrencies. Experts single out five states with are actively developing different initiatives on cryptocurrencies

Switzerland

Being a neutral country, Switzerland is also actively engaged in private financial and banking services. Once the country was even called a crypto nation. Later the Crypto Valley was established in Zug to attract cryptocurrencies and blockchain companies. It is an independent association supported by the government. The valley focuses on the global blockchain technology system and cryptographic innovations development. Switzerland is famous as one of the leading countries for successful ICO implementation.

Japan

Japan is considered as one of the most pro-crypto countries in the world. People’s willingness to accept innovation contributes to the popularity of cryptocurrencies. Japan officially recognized digital currencies as legal tender in 2017. The Japan Virtual Currency Exchange Association (JVCEA) is a self-regulatory body established in the country in 2018. It appeared as a result of the merge of the Japan Blockchain Association and the Cryptocurrency Business Association. The new company consists of 16 Japanese exchange markets and is known for its stocks and cryptocurrencies assessment.

UK

The United Kingdom is also on the list of the most crypto-friendly countries. Presently, there are numerous crypto communities engaged in blockchain development. Seven UK leading blockchain companies teamed up and created a self-regulating cryptocurrency association CryptoUK. This organization has made a set of regulations that control blockchain projects and digital assets. It pays special attention to British blockchain startups and their safety. The government’s non-interference in the economy makes Britain an attractive destination for crypto enthusiasts.

Netherlands

Freethinking and liberalism have always been the distinctive features of the Netherlands. Thus, it is not surprising that the country is quite liberal in terms of digital assets. Notably, a new bitcoin embassy has been launched in Amsterdam. Here, crypto enthusiasts are engaged in the popularization of virtual currencies. Amsterdam has overtaken other cities in the distribution of digital assets. The Dutch authorities have no intention to take control over cryptocurrencies. However, the Dutch Blockchain Coalition (DBC) is planning to create a regulator responsible for the cryptocurrency projects.

Denmark

Denmark is also on the list of crypto-friendly countries. Zero tax on digital currencies made it very appealing to crypto investors. Danmarks Nationalbank decided not to participate in virtual currency regulation. According to the bank, digital assets are not an official means of payment due to the absence of the main issuer. Currently, there is no regulator in Denmark to control virtual assets. Such conditions are very attractive for crypto enthusiasts.
