"Две сетры" - это широко распространенный сюжет среди баллад северных народов. На берегу моря живут две сестры. Старшая - тепноволосая, злая и страшная. Младшая - светловолосая, добрая и красивая. Обе они влюблены в одного молодого человека, а он влюбляется в младшую. Тогда старшая сестра из зависти приглашает младшую прогулятся на берег моря, где толкает её в воду, и та тонет. Старшая идет под венец с женихом младшей сестры. тело утопленицы выносит на берег. Её находят бродячие музыканты, и из её костей делают музыкальный инструмент (обычно арфу или скрипку), а из волос струны, и отправляются на свадьбу старшей играть. Там этот инструмент начинает петь голосом младшей сестры, и правда открывается (в некоторых вариантах старшая сетра так и остается безнаказанной). Первый зафиксированный вариант этой баллады 1656 года. Этот же сюжет встречается и в сказках, таких как, например, "Поющая косточка"
