"Я помню, как уже после выхода этой песни Дик Джеймс подошел ко мне, - вспоминал Джон Леннон незадолго до смерти, - и сказал: "Ты делаешь успехи, это действительно законченная история". Наверное, до того ему казалось, что я вроде как не заканчиваю свои песни". Вскоре, однако, музыкальный редактор Дик Джеймс изменил свои вкусы благодаря новаторскому стилю "Битлз" - в 1966 г. никто уже не искал "законченных историй" в их песнях. Но Джеймс был прав в одном: несмотря на то что песня была романтической фантазией, ее структура и мелодия были совершенны, да и вокальная аранжировка была просто великолепной. Композициями, подобными этой, "Битлз", кажется, уже навсегда покорили вершину британского бита, однако в течение следующих двенадцати месяцев музыканты еще несколько раз сделают это. — 25 мая в ГЦКЗ «Россия» прошел юбилейный концерт в вашу честь, а за день до этого рядом, на Красной площади, дал концерт Пол Маккартни. Но битломаны помнят, что в 64-м году вы написали статью, где предрекали «Битлз» скорое забвение и даже называли их «навозными жуками». Как такое могло случиться?
— Ой, как я ошибся, как ошибся! Но вы что, полагаете, будто я во всем и всегда был такой, как во время написания «Темной ночи»? Если я вам расскажу, сколько сделал за свою жизнь глупостей, ошибок и всяких дурацких поступков, то вы мне, наверное, не поверите.
Я о них просто молчу и выхваляюсь как этакое уникальное явление. Но глупостей я сделал много и от них сейчас прилюдно, принародно отрекаюсь. А битлы — потрясающие ребята. Кстати, Пол Маккартни давал концерт в мою честь, вы в курсе или нет?
— Нет.
— Так знайте.
— Вас заставили написать ту злополучную статью или вы сами недооценили масштаб явления?
— Значит, так, говорю вам однозначно и категорично: заказов, тем более подобного рода, я не исполнял никогда, ни для кого и ни за что!
Я думаю, что я был пьяный.
— Если бы вы сейчас встретились с Маккартни, что бы вы ему сказали?
— Я бы ему сказал: «Спасибо, старик!»

Когда-то в Робертино Лоретти были влюблены почти все жители Советского Союза. Его голос звучал из распахнутых окон квартир, за его пластинками выстраивались очереди. Его песни рассказывали о другой жизни, где вместо водки пьют крепчайший ямайский ром, где круглый год светит солнце, а люди все улыбчивы и красивы.

Миф
ИЗ СРЕДСТВ массовой информации советские люди узнали страшную и ошеломляющую новость. У Робертино Лоретти пропал голос. Никогда больше он не запоет, и никто не услышит в его исполнении новые песни. Официальная версия произошедшего была такова: капиталисты нещадно эксплуатировали талант Лоретти, заставляли его очень много гастролировать, и в итоге он так перенапряг связки, что петь ему больше нельзя.

Советские женщины и мужчины на чем свет стоит ругали ненавистных капиталистов за то, что они сгубили Робертино ради своей корысти. А пропаганда делала свое дело. Она распространяла слухи о том, что Робертино, повзрослев, стал жить очень бедно, что голос у него, конечно, есть, но он сильно потускнел и что поет певец в захудалых ресторанчиках и не может простить проклятой буржуазии свою загубленную судьбу. В то время большинство людей верили пропаганде. Некоторое время голос маленького Робертино Лоретти оплакивали, да потом и забыли. До середины восьмидесятых годов о мальчике с потрясающим голосом было в СССР почти ничего не известно.

Реальность
НА САМОМ же деле все было совсем по-другому...
