Circular / oval styles became more common in slides during the late 17th Century and into the early 18th Century. The depictions underneath the crystal grow more sophisticated as they evolved, but the sentiment remained the same. Note the evolution of the skull between this time and this ring from 1745. Behind the gold cypher and skull and crossbones memento is a layer of hair and silk, which this picture displays very well.

Hairwork bracelets are more common in sentimental and mourning jewellery. As much as the clasp or goldwork in a bracelet, the hair itself is important. As a memento, entire families could have different hair woven into the band.

Antique French Mourning Hair Art~Remembrance Piece for "Mother"
A beautiful remembrance piece for "Mother" or "Mère". The mourning hair piece has been skillfully fashioned into a floral work of art. It is then finished off with a small paper banner bearing its testament to "mother" . A cherished reminder of a beloved mother.

Wreaths can be an exceptional symbol of love from the family unit, often constructed with the hair of the entire family. The simple nature of the weaves and the size of the pieces make them memorials that could be constructed at home, much the same as a sampler. They can relate to being a form of folk art, as they are culture specific and each is unique to its own family.

Another perfect example of French hair art and a wonderful companion piece to the 1851 artwork above. To be noted is the continuity between the two pieces and how the traditional methods of hairworking had not changed, but rather simplifed.

"genealogy" hair wreath at Leila's Hair Museum in Independence
Victorian ladies would often collect hair from family members to weave into hair "wreaths" for purposes of preserving family history. The genealogy of this famly is ritten in the center of this framed wreath.

Leila's Hair Museum includes over 300 hair "wreaths" as well as other 3 D art objects such as this domed hair tree.

This was a piece of jewelry made to mourn the person whose hair is used as the branches of the weeping willow. Many Victorian hair pieces were made to honor those who had passed away.

Leila Cohoon’s Hair Museum in Independence, Missouri displays 159 wreaths and more than 2,000 pieces of jewelry made out of human hair. Though turning hair into wreaths was something of a Victorian obsession, hair art actually dates back to at least the 1400s.

Some of the displays in Cohoon’s collection come from as far back as the 17th century. In an age before photography, collecting hair was a way of capturing the essence of a person at a point in time, and keeping the memory of a deceased love one near. “That is the only part of that human body that’s still here,” says Cohoon.

-----------------------------
During the Victorian era, the custom of making art from hair became popular as a form of artistic memorial. It was used in jewelry, love tokens and hair wreathes, the latter of which could encompass hair from the members of ones church, school, and family.

To make a hair wreath, hair was collected from the deceased, formed into a shape (usually a flower), and added to a horseshoe-shaped wreath. The top was not connected and remained open to symbolize the ascent heavenward. Usually, the hair in the center of the wreath belonged to the most recently deceased family member; it would remain until another family member died, then be pushed aside to make room for the hair of the newly deceased.
