Cutodo Pagoda from White Marble: A Stone Book of Buddhism

- Where I've Been Before: Mandalay, Myanmar...

Retro: Rare photo of Mid-Autumn Festival in VN, circa 1950s

- Photo taken by a French man, probably in 1930s-50s in a Northern VN city (Hanoi or my home town Nam Dinh !), featuring Mid-Autumn Festival toys and decoration which have regrettably disappeared nowadays (I could still remember many thing among them in 1950s-60s !!!):
1. Crab big-size Chinese lantern; 2. A typical shop with displays; 3. Toys on display (Not any more now !); 4. Typical Home altar full of various fruits (To ask God/Buddha for prosperity !); 5. A shop selling many types of Chinese lanterns; 6. Fish, Butterfly etc. Lanterns on display; 7. Interesting types of toys (Many disappeared !); 8. Lion dance by street boys; 9. A Shop making and selling Mid-Autumn cakes.

Lyrics of the Song I Loved: Tom Jones's Delilah

Lyrics of the Song I Loved: Tom Jones's Delilah

- Tom Jones Delilah Lyrics
Songwriters: BUTLER, CHUCK / ROBERTS, KERRIE / SMITH, NATE

I saw the light on the night that I passed by her window. I saw the flickering shadows of love on her blind
She was my woman. As she decieved me I watched and went out of my mind

My, my, my, Delilah. Why, why, why, Delilah

I could see that girl was no good for me. But I was lost like a slave that no man could free.

At break of day when that man drove away, I was waiting. I cross the street to her house and she opened the door
She stood there laughing. I felt the knife in my hand and she laughed no more

My, my, my Delilah. Why, why, why Delilah

So before they come to break down the door. Forgive me Delilah I just couldn't take any more
(insert trumpet solo here)

She stood there laughing. I felt the knife in my hand and she laughed no more

My, my, my, Delilah. Why, why, why, Delilah

So before they come to break down the door. Forgive me Delilah I just couldn't take any more.
Forgive me Delilah I just couldn't take any more

Your Horoscope Based on Your Hour of Birth

- Your Horoscope Based on Your Hour of Birth

С 4.00 до 6.00 (Tiger - My 1st Son's !!!)

С 8.00 до 10.00 (Dragon - My Horoscope !!!)

"4

С 12.00 до 14.00 (Horse - My Grandson's !!!)

2. More Old Version, Probably by 1970-72 - ВИА Голубые гитары.

- Here are the similar words of the song I still remember since studenthood:
"В белом платье с пояском,
Я запомнил облик твой,
По обрыву босиком
Бегали мы с тобой!

Все прошло, ты не моя,
И на берег не придешь,
Молча моет тополя
Горький, как слезы, дождь!

Разве напрасно, любовь была,
Разве напрасно, луна плыла,
Разве встречались с тобой мы зря?
Нет, все забыть нельзя!
..."

3. And the Moldavian Version I used to Listen to - Noroc "De ce plâng chitarele" "О чем плачут гитары":

- "http://www.wantchinatimes.com/news-subclass-cnt.aspx?cid=1103&MainCatID=11&id=20120927000025":

... A Chinese beauty pageant featuring young women performing a routine in bikinis with traditional Chinese opera makeup and hair decorations conveys the beauty of Chinese culture rather than humiliates it, insists the pageant's executive director.

Internet photos of the pageant contestants, taken during a press show in April for the 37th Miss Bikini International Pageant in Beijing, have drawn more criticism than praise from China's netizens. One netizen described the unusual combination of light blue bikinis embroidered with Chinese opera designs, traditional opera hairstyles and makeup as a "vulgar claptrap," while another said: "After being tortured by those silly designers and contestants, the costume is no longer a costume and the bikini is no longer a bikini." Not all netizens have been critical of dance performance mixing Chinese opera elements and western style, however, with one netizen saying: "The designer is only trying to show beauty. What can be comprehended from it depends on the spectator."

Li Yulong, the executive director of the pageant committee, said the models were all winners in previous pageants. The debated hairstyle was a creative decision aimed at expressing the culture of Chinese opera, Liu said, adding that the background music was also in the style of traditional operas. The hair decorations represented traditional Chinese culture, making the beauties more attractive in a Chinese way and allowing western spectators to taste the beauty of their culture, Li said.

This is China: Govt Officials Swing/Orgy Scandal

... Wang Yu, a deputy secretary of the Youth League Committee of Hefei University in Anhui province, has reportedly admitted that he and his wife are two of the people photographed, China Daily reports. The couple has since been kicked out of the Communist Party and fired from their jobs.

Wang also said he "regretted his behavior" and insisted that the other two men in the photographs are not government officials, the New Yorker notes.

However, Wang Minsheng, the Communist Party secretary of Lujiang county in Anhui province, has also been implicated as a participant. The high-ranking official is said to bear a striking resemblance to one of the men in the photographs, though he's vehemently denied these accusations.

Government authorities were quick to quash any allegations of party member involvement after the photos were leaked.

The Lujiang authorities in Anhui province told People's Daily Online that the photos are not of "comrades in charge" and that claims to the contrary are "malicious slander"...

Recent VN History (XIX Century): Black Flag Army, or 'Quân Cờ đen'

- Black Flag Army. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Black Flag Army (Chinese: 黑旗军; pinyin: Hēiqí Jūn; Vietnamese: Quân cờ đen) was a splinter remnant of a bandit group recruited largely from soldiers of ethnic Zhuang background, who crossed the border from Guangxi province of China into Upper Tonkin, in the Empire of Annam (Vietnam) in 1865. They became known mainly for their fights against French forces in cooperation with both Vietnamese and Chinese authorities. The Black Flag Army is so named because of the preference of its commander, Liu Yongfu, for using black command flags.

In 1857, Liu Yongfu (Vietnamese: Lưu Vĩnh Phúc), a Hakka soldier of fortune was heading a group of about 200 men within a larger bandit group of Guangxi province headed by Huang Sihong (黃思宏). He defected with his men to the band of Wu Yuanqing (Wu Yuan-ch'ing, 吳元清) under his own - black - flag. Liu organized a ceremony reminiscent of the tiandihui rituals and what will be known as the Black Flag Army was born. The "army" was operating as an independent unit under Wu Yuanqing and his son and successor, Wu Yazhong (Wu Ya-chung, 吳亞终) [1] or Wu Hezhong. Wu Yuanqing and Wu Yazhong pretended to be Taiping "princes", but there was no basis for this claim.

After the Taiping rebellion was crushed in 1864 in Nanking, the Qing army proceeded to destroy systematically the many armed bands of south-eastern provinces, particularly the band of Wu Yazhong in Guangxi. In 1865, the situation of Wu Yazhong was desperate and Liu and his Black Flag Army crossed into Upper Tonkin.

The Black Flags demonstrated their usefulness to the Vietnamese government in helping to suppress the indigenous tribes that populated the hills between the Red and Black Rivers, and Liu was rewarded with official military rank.

Secure in the backing of the Vietnamese government, Liu Yongfu established a profitable extortion racket along the course of the Red River, taxing river commerce between Son Tay and Lao Cai at a rate of 10%. The profits that accrued from this venture were so great that Liu's army swelled in numbers during the 1870s, attracting to its ranks adventurers from all over the world. Although most of the Black Flag soldiers were Chinese, many of the army's junior officers were Americans or European soldiers of fortune, some of whom had seen action in the Taiping Rebellion, and Liu used their expertise to transform the Black Flag Army into a formidable fighting force. Liu commanded 7,000 black flag soldiers from Guangdong and Guangxi around Tonkin.[2]

The harassment of European vessels trading on the Red River led to the dispatch of a French expeditionary force to Tonkin under Commandant Henri Rivière in 1882. The resulting clash between the French and the Black Flag Army (the latter abetted by the governments of Vietnam and China) gradually escalated, resulting eventually in the Sino-French War (August 1884-April 1885). The Black Flags cooperated with Chinese forces during this war, most famously besieging a battalion of the French Foreign Legion in the Siege of Tuyen Quang. The Black Flag Army was formally disbanded at the end of the Sino-French War, though many of its members continued to harass the French for years afterward as freelance bandits.

Remarkably, the Black Flag Army was called into being again in 1895 by Liu Yongfu in response to the Japanese invasion of Taiwan (1895). Liu Yongfu crossed to Taiwan in answer to the appeal of his old friend Tang Ching-sung, previously the island's governor-general and now president of the short-lived Republic of Formosa, to command the Formosan resistance forces against the Japanese. Liu took a number of aging Black Flag veterans back into service to join the fight against the Japanese, but the reconstituted Black Flag Army was swept aside with ease by the Japanese Imperial Guards Division. Liu himself was obliged to disguise himself as an old woman to escape capture.

In 1873 the Vietnamese government enlisted the help of the Black Flag Army to defeat the first French attempt to conquer Tonkin, led by the naval lieutenant Francis Garnier. On 21 December 1873 Liu Yongfu and around 600 Black Flags (French: pavillons noirs, drapeaux noirs), marching beneath an enormous black banner, approached the west gate of Hanoi. A large Vietnamese army followed in their wake. Garnier began shelling the Black Flags with a field piece mounted above the gate, and when they began to fall back led a party of 18 French marine infantrymen out of the city to chase them away. The attack failed. Garnier, leading three men uphill in a bayonet attack on a party of Black Flags, was speared to death by several Black Flag soldiers after stumbling in a watercourse. The youthful enseigne de vaisseau Adrien-Paul Balny d’Avricourt led an equally small column out of the citadel to support Garnier, but was also killed at the head of his men. Three French soldiers were also killed in these sorties, and the others fled back to the citadel after their officers fell. Garnier's death ended the first French adventure in Tonkin.[3]

- Defeat of Henri Rivière's invasion of Tonkin, May 1883
In 1883 and the first half of 1884, during the period of undeclared hostilities that preceded the Sino-French War, the Black Flags fought several engagements against French forces in Tonkin. The first major clash, the Battle of Paper Bridge (19 May 1883), in which the French naval captain Henri Rivière was killed, was a striking victory for the Black Flag Army.[4]

- Battle of Phu Hoai and Battle of Palan
In the Battle of Phu Hoai (15 August 1883, the Black Flag Army successfully defended its positions against a French attack launched by General Alexandre-Eugène Bouët, though it took considerably higher casualties than the French.[5] In the Battle of Palan (1 September 1883) the Black Flags did less well, being driven from a key position on the Day River.[6]

- Disaster at Son Tay, December 1883
In December 1883 the Black Flag Army suffered a major defeat at the hands of Admiral Amédée Courbet in the Son Tay Campaign. Despite fighting with fanatical courage in the engagements at Phu Sa on 14 December and Son Tay on 16 December, the Black Flags were unable to prevent the French from storming Son Tay. Although there were also Chinese and Vietnamese contingents at Son Tay, the Black Flag Army bore the brunt of the fighting, and took very heavy casualties. In the opinion of the British observer William Mesny, a senior officer in the Chinese army, the fighting at Son Tay broke the power of the Black Flag Army, though the stubborn defence put up by the Black Flags in the Battle of Hoa Moc fifteen months later does not bear out this assessment.[7]

- Loss of Hung Hoa, April 1884
The Black Flag Army took no part in the Bac Ninh campaign (March 1884). After the French capture of Bac Ninh, the Black Flags retreated to Hung Hoa. In April 1884 the French advanced on Hung Hoa with both brigades of the Tonkin Expeditionary Corps. The Black Flags had thrown up an impressive series of fortifications around the town, but General Charles-Théodore Millot, the French commander-in-chief, took it without a single French casualty. While General François de Négrier's 2nd Brigade pinned the Black Flags frontally from the east and subjected Hung Hoa to a ferocious artillery bombardment from the Trung Xa heights, General Louis Brière de l'Isle's 1st Brigade made a flank march to the south to cut Liu's line of retreat. On the evening of 11 April, seeing Brière de l'Isle's Turcos and marine infantry emerging behind their flank at Xuan Dong, the Black Flags evacuated Hung Hoa before they were trapped inside it. They set alight the remaining buildings before they left, and on the following morning the French found the town completely abandoned.[8]

- Loss of Tuyen Quang, June 1884
The Black Flag Army retreated up the Red River to Thanh Quan, only a few days march from the frontier town of Lao Cai. Several hundred Black Flag soldiers, demoralised by the ease with which Courbet and Millot had defeated the Black Flag Army, surrendered to the French in the summer of 1884. One of Millot's final achievements was to advance up the Clear River and throw the Black Flag Army out of Tuyen Quang in the first week of June, again without a single French casualty. If the French had seriously pursued Liu Yongfu after the capture of Tuyen Quang, the Black Flags would probably have been driven from Tonkin there and then. But French attention was diverted by the sudden crisis with China provoked by the Bac Le ambush (23 June 1884), and during the eventful summer of 1884 the Black Flags were left to lick their wounds.[9]

- Alliance with the Chinese, September 1884 to April 1885
The fortunes of the Black Flag Army were transformed by the outbreak of the Sino-French War in August 1884. The Empress Dowager Cixi responded to the news of the destruction of China's Fujian Fleet at the Battle of Fuzhou (23 August 1884) by ordering her generals to invade Tonkin to throw the French out of Hanoi. Tang Ching-sung, the commander of the Yunnan Army, knew that Liu's services would be invaluable in the war with France, and Liu agreed to take part with the Black Flag Army in the forthcoming campaign. The Black Flags helped the Chinese forces put pressure on Hung Hoa and the isolated French posts of Phu Doan and Tuyen Quang during the autumn of 1884.

- The battle of Hoa Moc, March 1885
A soldier of the Black Flag Army, 1885
A Black Flag banner, captured by the French at Hoa Moc (2 March 1885) and now displayed in the Musée de l'Armée, Paris

In the winter and spring of 1885 3,000 soldiers of the Black Flag Army served during the Siege of Tuyen Quang. At the Battle of Hoa Moc (2 March 1885), the Black Flag Army inflicted heavy casualties on a French column marching to the relief of Tuyen Quang. French casualties at Hoa Moc were 76 dead and 408 wounded, the highest casualty rate and the heaviest loss in a single day's fighting sustained by the French during the Sino-French War. Many French officers at Hoa Moc said that the carnage was even worse than at Son Tay fifteen months earlier.[10]

- Disbandment of the Black Flag Army, June 1885
One of the conditions of the peace treaty between France and China that ended the Sino-French War was that Liu Yongfu should leave Tonkin. By the end of the war Liu had only around 2,000 troops under his command and was in no position to resist pressure from Tang Ching-sung and the other commanders of the Yunnan Army to remove the Black Flag Army. Liu crossed into China with some of his most loyal followers, but the bulk of the Black Flag Army was disbanded on Tonkinese soil in the summer of 1885. Unpaid for months and still in possession of their rifles, most of the unwanted Black Flag soldiers immediately took to banditry, under cover of the Can Vuong resistance movement against the French. It took months for the French to reduce them, and the route between Hung Hoa and the border town of Lao Cai was only secured in February 1886. In 1887, Black Flag bandits remained sufficiently powerful to ransack and pillage Luang Prabang.

Flags of the Black Flag Army. A possible reconstruction of Liu Yongfu's command flags at Son Tay
Liu Yongfu evidently had a personal preference for the colour black, having dreamt in his youth that he would one day become a 'general of the black tiger'. The Black Flag Army is named from the colour of Liu's command flags.[11]

French sources invariably mention that Liu Yongfu's personal command flags were very large, black in colour, and rectangular. In December, 1873, when Liu Yongfu confronted Francis Garnier outside Hanoi, the Black Flag Army was described as marching under enormous black flags. At the Battle of Palan (September 1, 1883), Liu Yongfu's headquarters was marked with seven identical black flags, bordered in silver. In the Son Tay Campaign (December, 1883), Liu Yongfu ordered three large black flags to be flown above the main gate of the citadel of Son Tay, bearing Chinese characters in white.

Individual Black Flag units flew a variety of flags, some rectangular and others triangular. In the afternoon of August 15, 1883, during the Battle of Phu Hoai, several units of the Black Flag Army emerged from their defences and advanced across open ground to attack the French left wing; according to a French eyewitness, the advancing Black Flag units bore numerous black banners decorated with Chinese characters in either red or white.[12]

Surviving Black Flag banners include a black triangular banner with a representation in white of the seven stars of the Great Bear.

Basic Vietnamese Herbs & Chilli in Kitchen

- An another copy from blogspot - Just to follow the previous post, from here: "http://www.leluu.com/2012/05/basic-vietnamese-herbs-in-my-kitchen.html"

The Vietnamese (from myself: first and most in kitchen and medicine !) use herbs in abundance. They don't just sprinkle a little on here and there, they use it like salad leaves and they love their herbs. The general term for herbs is "rau thơm" meaning, fragrant leaves. Full of perfume, flavour and health benefits herbs are used in almost every savoury dish I can think of. Coriander, sweet basil and mint are the most common herbs you can buy, so if in doubt or you can't find the required herbs use those.

- See Photo here:
1. Saw Tooth - Ngò Gai (Răng cưa !): Tastes like intensive coriander. Commonly used as a garnish in phở or with beef salad. If you can not get hold of this, use coriander.
2. Basil - Húng Quế: Used as a garnish in noodle soups like phở and bún bò Huế. The aniseed aroma and flavour is liquorice like and translate in Vietnamese as cinnamon basil. The leaves originating from Thailand and Vietnam oxidizes very quickly but are more fragrant and contains more flavours than others.
3. Betel Leaves - Lá Lốt: Not to be confused with betel nut chews (!), lá lốt has a pungent, minty, peppery taste and smells rather like cinnamon. These heart shaped leaves are usually used as wraps for garlicky beef recipes or in salads. substitute with shiso/ perilla leaves or vine leaves.
4. Shiso/ Perilla - Tía Tô: Earthy and bold yet very pleasant in peppery, cinnamon and fennel flavours. Often purple on one side and green on the other, it resembles stinging nettles. Also known as Japanese shiso or wild sesame. It is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin A & C, containing minerals calcium, iron and potassium. It is commonly used in China as medicine. Tía Tô is used in salads and summer rolls and cold bún noodle dishes. Subsititute with Japanese shiso or mint.
5. Cockscomb Mint - Kinh Giới: Delicate Kinh Giới resembles minty lemon balm and used in summer rolls, salads, fish and chicken dishes as well as garnishes in noodle soup such as bún bò Huế. This is great in a tea, just seep in boiling water for a refreshing and soothing drink in the sun. Use lemon balm if you can not find cockcomb - also known as Vietnamese lemon balm.
6. Hot Mint - Rau Răm: The citrus coriander odour is reminiscent but it is not related to the mint family. There is a spicy and peppery after taste that lingers. Also known as Vietnamese coriander or Vietnamese mint. It is commonly eaten fresh and raw in salads, gỏi cuốn, as well as in some soups such as canh chua and bún thang, and stews, such as fish kho tộ.
7. Garlic Chives - Lá He (Hẹ): Also known as Chinese chives. Tastes very garlicky and used as a seasoning in soups like won ton, salad and summer rolls.
8. Coriander - Ngò (Bắc: Mùi): Fragrant, diverse and wonderful! Coriander is used liberally as a garnish, torn or chopped over salads or almost any dish! Readily available in supermarkets, corner shops. A lot of the flavour is in the stalk.

Growing Your Own Tip:
You can perhaps buy seeds to grow your own herbs but I found hot mint in Columbia Flower market. It grew easily and in abundance in the summer. However, if you buy bunches of hot mint, basil, perilla and cockscomb in the shops, look out for a bunch with the thickest stalks. Once you have used the leaves, keep the stem in a glass of water (make sure its a glass so that you can see if you need to refill) you will see roots appear after 5 - 7 days. Remove from water and plant into a pot of soil and grow in a sunny spot. Hot mint, cockscomb and perilla grow very easily. You'll need very green fingers for basil but it does work.

Fresh herbs are imported in London on Thursday which is the best day to buy them. Always seek a bunch that is not bruised or too damp. You can store herbs, dry from moisture in an air tight bag in the fridge. Apart from coriander most can last for up to 10 days. I've never tried freezing them.

Check out Luke Nguyen's guide to herbs here it also has medicinal uses.
Here is Andrea Nguyen's guide. I will post another selection of herbs and spices. As for chillis, they are hot - so don't touch them and rub your eyes : )

VN Good Food Abroad: Hanoi Cafe in London

- Just trying to copy from a blog from here: "http://bellaphon.blogspot.in/2012/05/hanoi-cafe.html"

Sunday, 6 May 2012. Hanoi Café:

To love Vietnamese food is one thing but to gain more cognition about the Vietnamese people themselves goes much deeper than just a bowl of pho. Ever since I noticed the huge refugee camps in Malaysia housing the boat people back in the 80s, I’ve always been intrigued by my South East Asian neighbours. I knew that they were never allowed to settle in Kuala Lumpur because of the fact that the Vietnamese (primarily Buddhist) might disrupt an already awkward balance of ‘harmony’ dominated by the Muslim majority of Malaysia. Sadly the Vietnamese were perceived as yet another threatening Chinese tribe and like an additional kick in the teeth, they came bestowed with communist leanings (communism in Malaysia is defiled and illegal). Over the past three decades I've learned to respect and admire the Vietnamese British, the trauma of the 70s and 80s experienced by the first generation of the Người Việt Hải Ngoại only went further to enhance their reputation as a resilient sort. They’re hardly one to sit by idly or be spoon-fed by the State and end up perennially as spongebobs; no, they are naturally entrepreneurial and resourceful. And like the Chinese community before, the Vietnamese British have established themselves by setting up successful businesses revolving around the restaurant and food trade.

The majority of the Vietnamese folks residing in Hackney and South East London hail from North Vietnam and this is the part of the country that is also responsible for such illustrious dishes like phở, bánh cuốn and bún riêu. As Londoners, we are extremely lucky with the ever-growing number of Vietnamese eateries appearing and thankfully the food served is usually reassuringly authentic. Of course, a so-called ‘Vietnamese’ dining companion or a seasoned Hanoi traveller might snootily disagree, but I don’t give a toss because I wholeheartedly enjoy going for a Vietnamese in London every week. And lest I forget, Vietnamese cuisine found in London is definitely less approximate than its Indian, Thai or Italian equivalent!

Hanoi Café is run and owned by a North Vietnamese family. It has been around for over eight years and that’s despite its ‘homage to the 80s’ style dining room. It’s always practically empty whenever I turn up and remains the least patronised of any restaurants on the Pho Mile. This bodes well for solo diners, agoraphobic sufferers, or cynical anti-socials like yours truly. Hanoi Café obviously know a thing or two about survival by selling only six bowls of noodles daily or could it be due to the regular flow of fully-paid and ghostly diners that turns its competitors into green-eyed monsters!

The food served at this place is pretty much faultless and everyone of them delicious - See Photo here:

5. The beef pho - Beautiful broth but annoyingly let down by the cheap quality meat.
6. Bún Chả cá Lã Vọng - grilled pieces of fish then pan fried and served with bún (rice vermicelli), salad and herbs.
7. When it comes to monkfish for the masses, you cannot beat farmed catfish for its taste and value.
8. Gà kho sả ớt- chicken simmered with lemongrass in hot blistering chilli sauce.

Hanoi Café is as authentic as Vietnamese goes in London and it’s a great place to sample the holy trinity of South East Asian spices of lemongrass, chillies, and garlic. Its hidden service charge is not something that I endorse but nonetheless it’s my kinda secret tip off. Enjoy.

Eastern/Middle-East Theme Painting on Background of 'In a Persian Market. Albert W. Ketelbey'

- Youtube: In a Persian Market. Auf einem persischer markt. Sur un marché persian. Marché Persan - in VN: 'Phiên chợ Ba tư' which I duno why my elder bros were so crazy of ???

Albert William Ketelbey, 1875-1959. Albert, was born in Birmingham ,England - he composed many beautiful pieces of music. In 1929, he was proclaimed as "Britain, greatest living composer", but his work fell out of favour after the Second World War, and at the time of his death, he has slipped into obscurity with only a handful of mourners at his funeral.
The most paintings: Edwin Lord Weeks. Marino,s Choice. Marino van Wakeren.

- Current tension/conflict with China over South China Sea, or Eastern Sea in VN, makes VN Facebook community angry with the budget airline mixing-up VN 'Long Dress' with Chinese Qipao/Cheongsam, so that they have to apology for it. Here:
