The test was initially voluntary to avoid a rush of candidates till 1 June 1935 when all individuals who had started to drive on or after 1 April 1934 needed to have handed the test. The sensible automotive test is taken on the street, with a professionally skilled DVSA examiner directing the candidate round a pre-decided route. The examiner marks the candidate for driving faults, serious faults, and harmful faults. A candidate will fail the test if she or he accumulates any severe or harmful faults, or greater than fifteen driving faults.
