Spirit_of_Sky But thats the wonderful thing about foreign travel, suddenly you are five years old again. You cant read anything, you have only the most basic sense of how things work, you cant even reliably cross the street without endangering your life. Your whole existence becomes a series of interesting guesses.

Today is the first day of Songkran celebration in Thailand!

, 13 2014 . 16:54 +
Spirit_of_Sky Last year I was in Thailand during this festival and had a lot of ambiguous () and wet impressions:)

songkran-festival-in-thailand3 (601x421, 61Kb)

Also known as the Thailand Water Fight Festival, the Songkran Festival is considered one of the most important for the people of Thailand. It is celebrated as a traditional Thai New Year, when the people sprinkle water on the elders to pay Buddha respect.

This celebration will be the most important festival for the Thai people every year. Songkran festival is one of the Thailand National Public Holiday 2014. Even though the official holiday only last for 3 days, most workers take a week off.

Since the Sonkran Festival has to do mainly with water, the people will gently sprinkle or pour water over the elders and other family to ensure good luck. This sprinkling has evolved into splashing strangers on the streets, with either a bucket of water or a water gun, but it is all just for having good fun.

Because of all the water, Songkran is also known as the Thai Water Festival. Tourist visiting during the festival have mixed feelings about this, and some actually avoid going to Thailand during the festival. Still others plan their trips to coincide with Songkran and love to join in the fun water fights.

Man Walks Nearly 3000 Miles Through China.

, 15 2014 . 17:20 +

The Longest Way 1.0 - walk through China and grow a beard! - TIMELAPSE from Christoph Rehage on Vimeo.

Christoph Rehage started walking on November 9, 2007 and stopped in October 2008. He traveled over 4500 kilometers (2796 miles). All of the distance from Beijing to Ürümqi was completely on foot. The times where you can see him in the video riding a boat or sitting on a plane are during breaks Christoph had to take from walking, either to sort out bureaucracy issues or to take care of some personal issues.

Christoph was asked about his state of mind while he was walking and what he was thinking. He replied “It was just the way it would be on any normal day. Sometimes you think. Sometimes you don’t. Sometimes you worry about passports, dangers, pains, relatives and loved ones, and at other times your steps are light and you sing songs in the desert. Sometimes it is boring. And sometimes you feel at peace.”

When he was asked why he stopped walking, Christoph said, “I wanted to gain back my life. I had to regain control over myself, eliminate the inner boss that was telling me what to do. A lot of people look at the video thinking “I want to be free like that guy!” – but they don’t realize that I was driven by something, and maybe I was losing control over it.”
