I never knew that the marble used during two phases of the Washington Monument construction are different. There are three different marbles from Texas (the base), Cockeysville, Mass (upper part) and two layers of marbles from Sheffield near Baltimore.

That cheesy, shopping mall like WWII memorial with loud fountains distroyed the serenity.

The GPO became an arm of the U.S. Government, and the Government Printing Office building is one of the few government buildings to use brick instead of marble or granite. The Government Printing Office is located on the edge of NoMa, a neighborhood that is starting to become part of Downtown.
