Feb 23, 2011. Sony Professional expands its family of NXCAM products
New NXCAM Super 35mm sensor camcorder and the world’s first rain and dust proof camcorder launched to the professional market
BASINGSTOKE, UK, March 23, 2011 – Sony today revealed two new professional camcorders based on extensive customer feedback in the “NXCAM™” line-up. The NEX-FS100E is a new E-mount professional camcorder equipped with a Super 35mm motion picture sensor and is a further addition to Sony’s 35mm line-up. The HXR-NX70E is the world’s first rain and dust proof professional HD camcorder and is ideal for use in unforgiving environments. Sony’s expanding NXCAM line-up, including the existing HXR-NX5E provides a superb solution to many shooting applications.
NEX-FS100E – Digital Super 35mm made affordable
Originally announced in November 2010, Sony can now reveal the full specifications of the new NEX-FS100E. The NEX-FS100E is equipped with an “Exmor” Super 35 CMOS Sensor specifically designed for shooting motion pictures ideal for commercials and music videos, as well as action scenes in budget drama for example. This high sensitivity, large format sensor is capable of producing footage with shallow depth of field similar to that of a film camera for a new level of expression. The sensor also features the optimum number of effective pixels for shooting HD moving images. At a high 50fps in all-pixel scan mode, this allows images to be captured with less colour aliasing, jaggedness and rolling shutter than regular DSLR cameras, while providing the sensitivity to shoot at a minimum illumination of 0.28lux*. Another advantage of "Exmor" technology is minimal noise when shooting low-light scenes.?
* When using a fixed shutter speed of 1/25, auto gain and an iris setting of F1.4.?
The SEL18200 lens supplied with the NEX-FS100EK enables shooting in illumination as low as 1.5lux when using a fixed shutter speed of 1/25, auto gain and auto iris
“The NEX-FS100E NXCAM Super 35mm camcorder enables budget content creators and videographers to experience a new level of creative expression” said Bill Drummond, Strategic Marketing Manager, of Sony Professional. “Sony has responded to professional user feedback to create this new camcorder with an ergonomically designed body and accessories offering really flexibility in use.”
The NEX-FS100E adopts the Sony E-mount interchangeable lens system used in the “?” series NEX-5, 3 and NEX-VG10E “Handycam®”. It’s very short flange back distance (the distance between lens mount surface and sensor surface) allows various “?” A-mount lenses be mounted via a mount adaptor (LA-EA1). It is also possible to attach a huge range of other lenses, such as PL mount lenses using third-party mount adaptors.** With such flexibility, users will be able to experiment with numerous creative options by exploiting the characteristics of different optics.???
** Not all types of adaptors and lenses are guaranteed. Please ask adaptor manufacturers for details.
The NEX-FS100EK lens kit model comes supplied with the E18-200mm F3.5-6.3 OSS zoom Lens which gives users optical Steadyshot™ and auto focus.
The NEX-FS100E accepts affordable and readily available Memory Stick PRO Duo™ or SD, SDHC and SDXC cards. It is capable of recording images at various frame rates providing the added creative freedom of Slow and Quick motion with full HD. The camera operator can simply adjust the frame rate without using converters or editing software.
The grip, handle and hybrid LCD viewfinder are detachable also making it ideal for handheld scenes and shooting in confined locations.
HXR-NX70E - World first dust and rain proof professional HD camcorder
Bill Drummond, Sony Professional, said of the new HXR-NX70E, “Journalists will travel to some of the most remote and dangerous locations in pursuit of a story. We wanted to respond with a camcorder that, like them, can stand up to the rigours of the world’s most challenging conditions. For this Sony has created the HXR-NX70E, a robust ultra-compact camcorder that allows them to not only capture footage in any conditions, but also store it on a 96GB internal memory. When you are miles from anywhere, you don’t want to be worrying about having to find an extra memory card!”
The main unit of the HXR-NX70E has been proven to reach dust-proof and rain-proof performance requirements specified by IEC60529 IP54. Sudden rain or dust will not affect the operation of the camcorder, making the HXR-NX70E ideal for the most inhospitable of environments.
The HXR-NX70E incorporates an “Exmor R” CMOS sensor to deliver superior quality low-light footage and enhanced manual controls give the precision filmmakers need for shooting professional quality HD content . CinemaTone technology captures stunning footage with deeper, more film-like colour tones and the wide angle Sony G lens can take in more of the action with sharp images and brilliant, accurate colour. The optical SteadyShot image stabilisation with Active Mode also compensates for greater degrees of camera shake than ever before to deliver smooth video from wide angle to full telephoto perspectives. A built in GPS receiver makes the HXR-NX70E an ideal choice for journalists as it gives them the ability to ‘geotag’ footage when on location.
The NEX-FS100E/EK and HXR-NX70E will be available between July and September 2011.

New additions include 3D-Link feature, RGB 4:4:4 and S-LOG output option
At NAB 2011, Sony is announcing new features for its PMW-F3 professional handheld digital production camera with a Super 35mm imager: a 3D-Link capability, options for RGB 4:4:4 and S-LOG output and a wide angle, high power zoom lens.
The 3D-Link option (CBK-3DL01) will be available later this year via a firmware upgrade and 10-pin cable connection. This link is designed to provide synchronous remote command between two F3s using only one remote controller, with Genlock, time code and camera control. Recording can be started and stopped by remote control. The PMW-F3 will be able to be used in any 3D rig that can support the camera’s size.
RGB4:4:4 and S-LOG output capabilities are available through the CBK-RGB01, which also enables Dual-Link/3G-SDI switchable functionality. It comes pre-loaded with 4 LUTs and 5 user LUTs for monitoring in S-LOG mode, and also has a planning meta function.
Finally, two new lenses will be available for the PMW-F3: the SCL-P11X15 PL mount wide angle 1.5x zoom with a focal length range of 11-16mm and a speed of T3.0; and the SCL-Z18X140 FZ mount high power 14.0x zoom, with a focal length range of 18-252mm and a speed of T3.8.
The PMW-F3 camcorder, which is now available, is designed for a range of digital production applications – from commercial, documentary, television and feature film production to markets such as education, corporate and government and more.
The PMW-F3 can be combined with a low-cost PL lens kit, which includes 35/50/85mm T2.0 fixed focal length lenses, broadening the camcorder’s range of potential applications and giving users more flexibility in lens selection. For example, it is ideal for use as a second unit 35mm camera to complement Sony’s F35 and SRW-9000PL, which are also PL mount, S-35mm cameras.
The new F3 camcorder is based on Sony’s XDCAM EX workflow and uses Sony’s SxS ExpressCard-based recording media format. Its Super 35mm CMOS imager delivers shallow depth of field, with high sensitivity and low noise levels (ISO 800, T11; and S/N ratio of 63dB in 1920x1080/59.94i mode), as well as wide dynamic range.

Apr 10, 2011. Sony unveils first shoulder mount Professional 3D Compact Camcorder
Launch of the PMW-TD300 shoulder-mount 3D Camcorder enables users to take advantage of proven solid state workflow and capture 3D content more flexibly on the move
Sony is adding new dimensions to its 3D offering with the introduction of two single-body 3D camcorders for professional applications: the HXR-NX3D1E and the PMW-TD300.
The shoulder-mount design of the PMW-TD300 promises to bring greater flexibility to live shoots, freeing the operator to focus on image capture.
“This new camera will address many of the needs in live 3D production, working in the field as a perfect complement to the HD cameras currently used in 3D rigs by leading production companies and giving creative professionals a more flexible and mobile option for getting the right 3D shot,” said Olivier Bovis, Head of AV Media, Sony Professional, Sony Europe.
The PMW-TD300 features a dual 1/2-inch Exmor 3CMOS sensor design with full HD 1920x1080 pixel resolution. The camcorder is based on the XDCAM EX recording platform, allowing users to take advantage of a proven solid-state workflow for maximum flexibility.
When recording in 3D, left and right eye signals are simultaneously recorded onto separate SxS cards (four SxS card slots in total, two slots for each view). Its shoulder-mount design brings stability in ‘run and gun’ shooting environments, allowing professionals to worry less about ergonomics and concentrate more on getting the right shot.
An inter-axial distance of 45mm delivers a wide range of shooting zones to capture quality 3D images, especially for near-side shooting with a 1.2m minimum convergence distance. A newly developed dual-lens system allows for full synchronisation with high accuracy in focusing, zooming and iris adjustment.
The camera is switchable between 2D and 3D modes. The 2D view is recorded onto a single card, with 2D redundancy achieved through parallel recording onto L/R cards. (Images recorded on the left and right cards are slightly different, because different lenses are used.)
The PMW-TD300 will be available in Autumn 2011.

The XDCAM Station hybrid media recorder will feature an internal hard-disc or solid state drive storage, a Professional Disc drive, SxS memory card slots and a VTR-like control panel.
The XDCAM Station will be the core of XDCAM workflows in networked environments. Beyond providing an effective bridge solution between XDCAM Professional Disc and SxS memory card media, it also enables multi-task and multi-access capabilities and can enhance the functionality and the performance of network. Several versions will be available: XDS-PD2000 (internal storage: 0.5 TB SSD, SxS and Professional Disc); XDS-PD1000 (internal storage: 1 TB HDD, SxS and Professional Disc); and the XDS-1000 (internal storage: 1 TB HDD, SxS only).
Sony’s XDCAM ‘Juke’ Library, the XDJ-1000, is a compact automated XDCAM Professional Disc library, designed to enhance an XDCAM workflow by allowing for more efficient disc ingest, interchange and archiving. It has 30 slots (128GB/quad layer discs/120 Hours at 50 Mb/s), and supports XDCAM MXF and data files, and uses a simple FTP and web browser interface via a gigabit Ethernet.
Other convenient functions include remote browsing and maintenance, as well as disc formatting and duplication functionality.
Sony is unveiling at NAB a new version of its powerful archiving system called XDCAM Archive (V1.5). This is an integrated media content management system designed for file-based and baseband media workflows. It features a web based GUI for easy access and management, and allows users to easily capture, store, manage, exchange and share content, as well as browse on-line and off-line material.
Sony’s XMPilot is the XDCAM metadata management system, and at NAB, the technology is being demonstrated with enhanced functionality. XMPilot is now integrated with compatible XDCAM camcorders, allowing users to input metadata directly into the camcorder at the start of the content creation workflow. Users can also install a Wi-Fi adapter that connects mobile devices and XDCAM camcorders, enabling users to register metadata on-site. This metadata can be embedded as electronic data into an archive file, to further enhance an organisation’s efficient workflow.
Finally, at NAB Sony is also showing a prototype triple-layer version of the XDCAM Professional Disc media, which is re-writable up to 100 GB capacity.

Apr 11, 2010. Next generation CineAlta camera with new 8K CMOS image sensor
The F65 sets a new benchmark with extraordinary resolution, dynamic range, colour reproduction and sensitivity
Sony is revolutionising digital cinematography with the official unveiling of its much-anticipated next-generation CineAlta camera. The F65 raises the bar in the quest for the ‘look’ of 65mm film, and delivers on its promise to derive true 4K resolution and beyond – at the point of image capture.
Sony’s unique 8K image sensor, with approximately 20 megapixels, offers higher image fidelity than any other camera. With 16-bit RAW output, the F65 establishes the gateway to a complete, end-to-end 4K mastering workflow.
“Sony's new F65 digital motion picture camera combines true 4K resolution with an expansive dynamic range that enables a more nuanced reproduction of fine textural and tonal details,” said Curtis Clark, ASC. “Along with excellent contrast and exceptional colour reproduction the F65 produces images that have a rich filmic look and feel, providing filmmakers with significantly enhanced creative photographic possibilities.”
At the heart of the F65 camera is Sony’s newly developed 8K sensor, which will deliver pristine HD, 2K, and true 4K resolution today - and will go far beyond 4K in the future, as the industry needs to evolve. The Sony imager is also the first to provide a dedicated green photosite for each pixel in the 4K output image. This is twice the amount of green resolution compared with traditional 4K Bayer pattern sensors, providing a significant improvement in image resolution that is ideal for VFX processing.
“Sony already has a successful track record in developing 4K technology, with our 4K digital cinema projection system literally re-defining the movie-going experience,” said Olivier Bovis, Head of AV Media Business, Sony Professional, Sony Europe. “However, Sony is committed to driving every aspect of a 4K workflow – starting with acquisition. This camera is the pinnacle of 30-plus years of research, experience and engineering breakthroughs and is the latest example of Sony’s ongoing pursuit of the highest quality content creation and production.”
The 8K CMOS sensor can run up to maximum 120Fps. This sensor performance combined with 16 bit RAW output makes the F65 the first image capture system designed from the ground up to support the Academy IIF-ACES, Image Interchange Framework, Academy Colour Encoding Specification.
The F65 has also been designed for multiple production applications, including 3D rigs and Steadicam, and will offer a compact and lightweight detachable camera T-head for these configurations. In addition, an optional mechanical rotary shutter will be available for completely eliminating motion artefacts that are inherent with other CMOS sensor technology.
A dockable SR memory recorder – model SR-R4 – attaches to the camera to record directly onto an SR memory card of 256 GB, 512 GB or 1TB capacity with data security and sustained throughput of 5 Gbps. The recorder will enable ultra high speed recording of 16-bit RAW data.
A 1TB memory card recording at 24 Fps will store 50 minutes of footage in 4K 16 bit RAW. As with previous generations of CineAlta systems, Sony continues to work closely with the industry to develop this next generation digital motion picture camera technology and storage, workflow system.
