I adore this block, with its half-and-half colouring. It is recorded by Maggie Malone (2003), but she makes no other notes about its origin. There are two other bocks called Massachusetts:

This block is from EQ7. It’s really just a variation on the Air Castle type blocks. Enjoy.

Today’s block is the simplest variation of the blocks called Evergreen Tree; after all, we are making it 3″ size! It was illustrated by Maggie Malone in 2003, but I have no further information about its provenance.

An Original Design was one of the winners of the Sears and Roebuck quilt block competition held in conjunction with the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair. This is the booklet in which the names of the winners and their blocks were published:

The original record for today’s block is the Ladies’ Art Company (#158, c. 1895), where they called it Centennial. The block had other incarnations as: Autograph Quilt Block (Hearth and Home) and Grecian Star (Needlecraft Supply, 1938).
