  • 5 grams size 11 Japanese cylinder beads
  • 1 gram size 15 seed beads in a color to match or contrast with the cylinder beads
  • Nymo D
  • Size 12 beading needle

 -

2. Part I: Make the Ring

On a 2’ length of thread, pick up 34 cylinder beads and tie them into a ring, leaving a 4” tail. Pass needle and thread through the first cylinder bead strung.
 -

3. Stitch the First Round

Pick up a cylinder bead, skip the next bead in the ring, and pass through the following bead. Pull snugly. Continue in this manner until you have completed the entire round, keeping the work flat with your fingers.

 -

4. Work in Tubular Even Count Peyote Stitch for a Total of Seven Rounds

Continue working in tubular even count peyote stitch, making the step up at the end of each round, until you have a total of 5 rounds. Keep the work flat with your fingers, and your tension loose. Even if you see a little bit of thread in between the beads as you stitch, that is okay.

Work Round 6. At the end of Round 6, pull tightly so that the work curls in on itself.

Work Round 7, adding cylinder beads and pulling snugly with each one.

 -

5. Get in Position to Add a Round of Size 15 Beads to the Back of the Ring

At this point, flip the work over, thread a needle on the tail, and pass through the next bead so that you are in position to add a row of size 15 seed beads.

 -

6. Add a Round of Size 15 Seed Beads

Add a round of size 15 seed beads, weave the thread back into the beadwork, knot and trim close to the beadwork.
 -

7. Zip Up the Ring

Flip the work back over, and line up the front and back of the ring. Zip up the ring into a loop by passing needle and thread alternately through a size 15 on the back and the corresponding cylinder bead on the front. Pull snugly. Weave the thread end in so that it comes out of one of the cylinder beads on the outside edge of the ring.
 -

8. Add a Loop

Pick up 10 cylinder beads and pass needle and thread back through the same bead you just came out of to form a loop. Pass needle and thread through the loop once or twice more to reinforce. (This is the loop that you will use to attach the toggle to your piece.) Weave the thread back into the beadwork, knot, and trim close to the beadwork.
 -

9. Embellish the Ring, if Desired

Optional embellishment using 4mm round beads, gemstones, crystals or firepolished beads: Coming out of one of the beads on the outside edge of the ring, pick up a 4mm bead and a size 15 bead. Skip the size 15 and pass back through the 4mm bead.
 -

10. Continue Adding 4mm Beads to Embellish the Ring

Skip a space, and pass needle and thread through the next bead on the outside edge of the ring. Continue adding 4mm beads until you have gone all the way around the ring.

11. Part II: The Bar

On a 2’ length of thread, pick up a stop bead and 17 cylinder beads. Work flat odd-count peyote for a total of 14 rows.

 -

12. Zip Up the Beadwork into a Tube

Zip up the piece of beadwork into a tube.

13. Add a Loop

Weave needle and thread into a center bead somewhere on the tube. Pick up 10 cylinder beads and pass back through the bead you just came out of to form a loop. Pass needle and thread through the loop once or twice more to reinforce.

 -

14. Optional Embellishment for the Bar

Coming out of one of the edge beads, pick up a 4mm bead (gemstone, crystal, firepolished or other glass bead) and a size 15 seed bead. Skip the size 15 seed bead and pass back through the 4mm bead.
 -

15. Attach the 4mm Bead to the Bar and Repeat for the Other Edge

Pass needle and thread down through a cylinder bead on the other side of the edge. Weave needle and thread through the beadwork to the other edge and repeat for the other side.

 -

16. The Finished Toggle with Embellishment

Attach your toggle clasp the same way you would a metal clasp.
