Музей искусства Филадельфии – это некоммерческая организация, зарегистрированная в штате Пенсильвания (США). Она существует с пожертвований и различных грантов, как частных, так и государственных, считается одним из лучших музеев искусства в мире. За 125 лет своего существования он вышел за те рамки, которые ему изначально предназначались. На сегодняшний день в музее представлено более 225 тысяч произведений искусства, которые олицетворяют величайшие достижения в творчестве. Помимо выставок, которые предлагает Музей искусства Филадельфии, при нем также действует программа обучения. Музей искусства Филадельфии – это не только главное здание. Он также объединяет под своим началом Музей Родена и несколько других.
Музей был основан в 1876 году и его открытие совпало с Всемирной выставкой того же года. Сначала музей располагался в том же здании, что и Всемирная выставка – в Мемориал-холле. Несмотря на то, что расположение в целом было неплохим, здание было довольно далеко от центра города, а потому посетителям не очень удобно было в него добираться.
Строительство того здания, в котором музей располагается сейчас, началось в 1919 году, когда Томас Б. Смит заложил первый камень на земле бывшей резервации. Строительство было завершено в 1928 году. Его дизайн выполен в стиле «неогрек» и был разработан Хорасом Трумбауером и фирмой «Zantzinger, Borie and Medary». Фасад здания создан из доломита. Фронтон украшен скульптурами греческих богов и богинь, созданными Полом Джиннивейном. Также там можно увидеть грифонов, которые были выбраны символом музея в 1970-х годах.
