God on the Hill: Temple Poems from Tirupati by Tāllapāka Annamayya

Суббота, 15 Декабря 2012 г. 18:40 + в цитатник
What are these graces,
these pearls,
raining down her cheeks?
Can’t you imagine, friends?
What could they be but beads of sweat
left on her gentle face
by the god on the hill
when he pressed hard,
frantic in love?

I was so shy. Now I smile for you.
The same eyes that couldn’t hold you
now admire you.
I won’t be cross with you anymore.
I’m your girl.
I’m not picky.
Come home.

My lips were parched.
Now they flow with honey.
My hair, once unkempt,
is now decked with flowers.
You’re the god on the hill.
I’m Alamelumanga.
You’re right for me.
Come home.

Just for fun, you drown living beings
in the ocean of life, and then you dredge them up.
For this flaw, they make you sleep
on the ocean, even if
you’re God.

Imagine that I wasn’t here. What would you do with your kindness?
You get a good name because of me.
Think it over. By saving someone so low,
you win praise all over the world.

You can’t embrace it, you can’t reject it.
You’ll never escape Love’s command.
Women’s faces are lamps held up in the market.
Their breasts are golden pots on the front porch.
Luscious mouths, shared honey.
We make love to bodies. Make no mark.
Warm curries on the plate, lover’s quarrels, displays of pride,
spots of shade in the hot sun, occasional hours of love,
strings you can’t break, mysterious smiles,
pain in the midst of goodness, words within words,
oil poured on fire, hopes that never end,
the space inside desire, like drinking butter
when you’re thirsty:
finding the god on the hill
is the one good thing that is real.

Shrimati Bhudevi katha

Bhu (700x397, 30Kb)
Bhudevi's incarnations are

Bhudevi (Varaha's consort)
Padmavathi/Alamelumanga (Venkateshwara's wife)
Satyabhama (Dwarakanaath's wife)
Vedaavathi (according to some sources, the woman who took Seeta's place so that Ravana did not actually kidnap Seeta (?))
Vishnupriya (consort of Gaurahari)
Andal/Goda Devi (one of the Alwars- Wife of Sri Ranganatha and Beloved of Lord Krishna)

Any others?

Some prayers/slokas on Bhudevi:

sri-sanatana-misro'yad pura satrajito napa |
vishnupriya jagan-mata yat-kanya bhu-svarupini ||

He who was King Satrajit in Krishna lila was Sanatan Mishra in Chaitanya lila. The mother of the universe, the incarnation of the Lord's Bhu-sakti, is his daughter Vishnupriya. (Gaura-gaoddesa-dipika 47)

paandye vishvambharaam godhaam vandhe shree ranganayakeem
- brahmathanthra swathanthra swaami in dhivyasoori charitham

I pray to Goda devi (Andal), who is vishvambharaa (Bhudevi), who is
the beloved of Sri Ranganatha, and who was born in the paandya kingdom in the month of aashaada(aadi) under the star of poorNa phalguni(pooram) in a tulasi grove.

Sri RangarAja Harichandana yOga dhrusyAm
SaakshAth KashamAm KaruNayA KamalamivAnyAm
GOdhAm ananya Sarana: SaraNam PrapadhyE

(from Swamy Vedanta Desika's Goda Stuti)

(Meaning): GodA Piraatti (Andal/Bhudevi) is the wish-granting Kalpaka tree in flower garden of the kulam of Sri VishNu Chitthar; She is most beautiful as She gives us Her darsanam as the Karpaka creeper united with Her Lord Sri Rangarajan standing majestically as the Harichandana tree in that
Nandavanam; She is the incarnation of BhUmi Devi known for Her auspicious qualities of forbearance; indeed ,Godai is the embodiment of forbearance;
When it comes to the quality of Her Mercy, Godai is a veritable MahA Lakshmi (KamalA). AdiyEn, who has no other refuge seek Her as my sole refuge.

Bhudevi's Gayatri Mantra:

Dhanurdharaayai Cha Vidmahe
Sarva siddhayai Cha Dheemahi
Thanno Dharaa Prachodhayaath.

We worship the Goddess who adorns a bow and arrow in her hand. Salutations to the Goddess who gives all the boons to the devotees. May that Bhudevi stimulate our creative faculties.

Definitely, She takes a great burden in order to help us.

Yes, Her only concern is to help the people suffering in the world. Her compassion extends even to non-devotees. You don't have to come to Her wanting something. Andal, in Tiruppavai, spends nearly a third of the text in trying to get a sleepy gopi out of bed, to go to worship Lord Krishna.

You don't even have to come to Her eager and asking her help. She is ready to give, if only you will agree to accept! And what has she to offer? She only wants to share Her Beloved Lord Krishna! She wants to pull you out of samsaara and drop you in His lap, just as Varaha pulled Bhudevi out of the muck during pralaya, and hugged Her close.

Jaya Bhumi mata!

Since we mentioned Bhudevi as Andal waking up sleeping gopis and prodding them to go to Krishna, and since Kishalaya in the other thread asked for some more "raga in vaidhi land," I'm posting a quote from the Tiruppavai commentary of Bhuvarahacharya.

"The first five pasurams of Tiruppavai form one section and pasurams 6-15 the second section. These 10 stanzas describe the sleeping girls being woken up by those who are already up. These two groups represent KAINKARYA NISHTHA (those impatient to serve God, like Lakshmana) and GUNA NISHTHA (those who are content to meditate on the glorious qualities of God, like Bharata).Nammazhwar speaks of their presence even in Vaikunthaloka - VAIKUNTATTU AMARARUM (service minded) MUNIVARUM (enjoying His Virtues). Poison acts on different people in different ways - some faint and some run here and there; so do the attributes of Sri Krishna. Hence the sleeping girls not a bit inferior in their longing for Krishna to those who wake them...

Having woken up a handful of girls Andal could have proceeded on to Krishna. Why go to EVERY house ? If one is a Sri Vaishnava he should think of the welfare of ALL- not just a few. Not even a single girl should lose the golden opportunity of getting the grace of Sri Krishna."

Don't you just love Her attitude?

Does Laksmi accompany the Lord Matsya or the Lord Varaha incarnations or does She say, "Visnu, if you become a fish or a pig, no way am I having conjugal pastimes!"?

No matter who what or where the Lord is; in Vrindavana even... Lakshmi cannot resist the beauty of His chest, and resides there *permanently*

But yes, Bhudevi is not bothered by the animal part. She just loves Him so much!

Besides, Bhumi was covered from head to toe in moss and mud and muck. She was so ashamed to appear before Her beloved Lord not in Her usual splendor. So the Lord appears as a boar, so She will not feel embarassed to appear before Him.* And Lord Varaha lifts Bhumi up out of the muck, and She is crying and trembling with fatigue, and He, also covered with mud, just holds Her close. Such intimacy and such love passes between them at that time... Bhumi presses Her cheek against Govinda's cheek and just weeps.

This is God.

* Bhudevi is very shy. That's why She is not as well known as the other Consorts...

"As the Lord VaraahA lifted Bhumi Devi out of the praLaya jalam with His gigantic form and placed Her on His left shoulder for the whole world to see His beautiful bride. Our Mother , who is not used to such public celebrations out of Her own innate modesty sat there uncomfortably on the perch of Her Lord's shoulder and received His (BHUVARAAHAN"S ) public adoration .She did not seem to like the public spotlight as His Queen ."

Swami Desikan's DhyAna SlOkam
on Bhu Devi :

pathyur dakshiNa pANi pankaja putE vinyastha paadhAmbhujA
Vaamam pannaga Saarvabhouma sadhrusam paryankayanthee bhujam
pothra sparsa lasath kapOLa palakA pullAravindhkshaNA
saa mE pushyathu mangaLAni anudinam SarvANi Sarvam SahA

Swami Desikan visualizes Bhumi Devi resting her lotus feet on the left uplifted hand that is huge insize as AdisEshA himself. She is using that hand as the paryankam (bed) for Her lotus feet . At this time, She is tightly held by the Lord and Her left cheek is brushing with the right cheek of the Lord and she is in a blissful state of enjoyment of the nearness of Her Lord through this contact (Romanjali). Her eyes in their state of Joy resemble just blossomed Lotuses. Swami Desikan prays to this Mangala murthy united with the Lord to confer on him all auspiciousness always.

sankalpa kalpa lathikAm avadhim KshamAyA :
svecchA Varaha mahisheem sulabhAnukampAm
visvasya maatharam akinchana KaamadhEnum
VisvambharAm asaraNa: saraNam prapadhyE

(From swamy Desika's Bhu Stuti)

Our Lord took the avahtAram as Varahan out of His own sankalpam. Bhu Devi wasHis dear consort in this avathAram. She is like a kalpaka creeper in granting the wishes of Her devotees. She is the boundary of compassion and forbearance. She forgives all of our sins. She responds easily and readily to all of our prayers. She is the Mother of this universe and protects Her children always. She responds to those, who are unable to undertake the rigors of Bhakthi Yogam and in this matter, She acts like the wish-fulfilling KamadhEnu to those who surrender unto Her through the sacred act of Prapatthi. I, who have no succor, perform my prapatthi to this Divya Mahishi of the Lord, Bhumi Devi in all humility .

"...Bhumi Devi was concerned for Her suffering children and asked Her Lord , Aadhi VarAhan to reveal a laghu upAyam for helping them from the terrors of samsAram and to make them eligible for Her Lord's anugaham . Our Dayaasvarupa , Bhu-Varaaha responded positively to His dear Consort's request and blessed us with the revered slokams known as Varaha Carama Slokams and thus revealed His depth of affection for His children .

(In Varaha Purana) Bhumi devi says :

"My Lord ! I am Your disciple , servant and have great bhakthi for You. (Aham sishyA cha daasi cha bhakthA cha tvayi Maadhava --114.64) Please accept My appeal and bless Me with instructions on an easy means that would help all jeevas to reach sathgathi (mOksham ) ". The Lord then revealed the two slOkams that constitute the pUrva and Uttara BhAgams of Varaaha Carama Slokam."

---

Varaaha Carama:

sTithE manasi susvasTE sarIrE sati yO nara:
dhAthusAmyE sTithE smarthA visvaroopam cha mAmajam
tatastham mriyamANam thu kAshtA-pAshANa sannibham
Aham smarAmi Madhbhaktham nayAmi ParamAm gathim

The Entire Universe is My body (SarIram). I have neither birth or death . When one performs saranagati to Me with the firm belief that I am His everlasting support , I think of him at the time of his death, and rush to his side even if he has no control over his senses and remains like a log or stone. I lead him then to My Supreme abode via archiradhi margam (path of light) to perform nitya kaimkaryam to Me there .

"Bhoo devi is the consort of Lord Oppiliappa swamy. In this leela, Her father was Markandeya Maharishi. Lord Vishnu, disguised as an elderly brahmin man, wanted to take Bhudevi as wife. Markandeya repeatedly insisted that his daughter was far too young for marraige. She was so young that she had not even learnt how to cook. She was physically and emotionally unready for marriage. Still the brahmin repeatedly insisted that he must marry bhumi devi, threatening to commit suicide on the spot out of extreme emotional agony, if he could not become the husband of this girl.

"In emotional turmoil, Markandeya fell to his knees and prayed to Sriman Narayana for a solution to this problem. When he again opened his eyes, instead of the old brahmin, he saw that the Lord Himself was standing there before him. He stood dressed in the most beautiful clothing, with a radiant smile, with one hand on His hip, and the other extended asking bhudevi's hand in marriage.

"Thus they were married, but Markandeya Maharishi was saddened by the loss of his beloved daughter Bhudevi. She was yet so young... she had not even learnt to cook- always put too much salt or too little salt... how would she take care of the Lord's needs without knowing all this... With so many worries in his mind, he asked the Lord three boons which were as follows:

1. O! Lord you should take dishes without salt in this place. But the dishes should taste wounderful to you and your devotees.

2. You should never leave my daughter alone, you have to stay with her forever.

3. This place should be named after me.

"So all three boons were fulfilled by the Lord. Even to this day in Markandeya Kshetram, the dhama of Lord Oppiliappa, all the food offered to the Lord is without salt. And neither He nor the devotees take any consideration of the food's taste- the only essential ingredient is Love, of which there is always plenty...

The deity of Oppiliappaswamy has the inscription "Maam ekam saranam vraja" on His left hand, while His right seems to be in "varada hasta" as in the Tirupati Srinivasa Murthy, but is actually outstretched asking for Bhumi's hand in marriage. Bhudevi sits in a kneeling posture facing Him, with her father Markandeya to Her right side, in a posture of kanyadanam, ready to give His daughter in marriage to the Lord.

A quote from divyadesam online.com:

"Whenever Oppiliappa perumal's idol is taken in Procession. He is always accompanied by Bhoomidevi only. Perumal wont step out the temple without Thaayar inorder to keep his promise. "

Shri Shri Gaura Vishnupriya or Shri Shri Gaura Gadadhara

Пятница, 22 Июня 2012 г. 03:39 + в цитатник
Q. by Matus: Shrila Bhaktivinoda Thakura states in Jaiva Dharma (Chapter 14) that:
On the path of arcana, Sri Gauranga is worshiped with Visnupriya, and on the path of bhajana, Sri Gauranga is worshiped with Gadadhara.

Answer by Swami Gaurangapada:

This is a deep question. Bhajana normally goes deeper than Archana and is for more advanced sadhakas and Archana purifies the mind and heart for Bhajana. Thus, those who are on the path of Archana or Deity Worship, should worship the divine couple Shri Shri Gaura Vishnupriya to first purify their heart and prepare to enter the higher platform of Bhajana. Shri Shri Gaura Gadadhara worship is vaichitra vilasa or very advanced and can be only performed after a soul attains a high level of advancement, purity and insight in Bhajana. Otherwise the soul may end up speculating and committing an offense that Gaura Gadadhara worship is Gauranga Nagaribhava.

Thus it is important that the soul worships the Deity of the couple Shri Shri Gaura Vishnupriya via Archana vidhi to realize that Lord Gauranga is an ideal householder and His worship does not include amorous relationships with other females associates like in the case of Lord Krishna. Only then can the soul properly understand the pastimes of Shri Shri Gaura Gadadhara in meditation as being fully pure of any mundane contamination, lust and any distorted relationship. As I have explained earlier, Shri Gadadhara is Shrimati Radha Herself but They do not enact those same pastimes of Krishna lila in Gaura lila. Rather They remember and relish Their pastimes of Krishna lila by Naam Sankirtana in Gaura lila.

The second reason for this is Gaura Vishnupriya's pastimes are an integral part of Gaura lila and Gaura Gadadhara's pastimes have more intimate connection with Krishna lila. So Shrila Sacchidananda Bhaktivinoda Thakura wants the devotees to first immerse themselves in Gaura lila via the worship of Shri Shri Gaura Vishnupriya and then slowly ascend to the platform of Krishna lila via the Bhajana of Shri Shri Gaura Gadadhara as the heart is gradually purified.

I am sorry for the delay in replying to this question. As the previous forum was down for some time, it had missed my attention.

Daaso'smi, Swami Gaurangapada.

Without Lord Nityananda's mercy, no one can attain Shri Shri Gaura Vishnupriya or Shri Shri Gaura Gadadhara. Therefore the worship of Shri Shri Nityananda Gauranga and the chanting of Their Holy Names is the most prayojaniya (beneficial) for the conditioned souls of Kali Yuga. Those who are more pure and want to worship Lord Gauranga with His Shakti can worship Shri Shri Gaura Vishnupriya and in the advanced stages Shri Shri Gaura Gadadhara. Though we have seen the most advanced rasika Acharyas like Shrila Gauridasa Pandita worship Shri Shri Nityananda Gauranga only. So one should express our mood and accept guidance from Shrila Gurudeva about Whom to worship if one is not sure. The worship of Shri Shri Nityananda Gauranga is recommended to one and all whereas the other may require consultation with the spiritual master.

Daaso'smi, Swami Gaurangapada.

SRI VISHNUPRIYA DEVI

Пятница, 22 Июня 2012 г. 03:32 + в цитатник
vishnupriya-devi (334x500, 46Kb)
SRI VISHNUPRIYA DEVI
by Srila B.B. Tirtha Goswami Maharaja
President of the WVA
sri-sanatana-misro'yam pura satrajito nrpah
visnupriya jagan-mata yat-kanya bhu-svarupini

King Satrajit in Krishna lila became Sanatan Mishra in Chaitanya lila. The mother of the universe, the incarnation of the Lord's bhu-sakti, is his daughter Vishnupriya.
(Gaura-ganoddesa-dipika 47)

Krishna married Satyabhama, the daughter of King Satrajit and a Yadu princess. In Gaura lila, this same Satrajit became Sanatan Mishra and she became Vishnupriya Devi. All manifestations of Vishnu tattva have three energies, known as Sri, Bhu and Nila (or Lila). Lakshmipriya Devi is the sri-sakti of Mahaprabhu in his majestic Gaura-Narayan attitude; Vishnupriya is his bhu-sakti and Nabadwip Dham is his lila-sakti. Srila Gadadhar Pandit Goswami is the sakti of Gaura-Krishna, or Mahaprabhu in the mood of Krishna.

Knowledge is of two kinds, apara vidya or material knowledge and para vidya or transcendental knowledge. Vishnupriya Devi is the personification of transcendental knowledge. Devotees worship her on her appearance day on the sukla pancami of the month of Magh. On the same day, materialistic persons seeking the perfection of worldly knowledge worship the goddess of learning. Saraswati. Vishnupriya Devi's grandfather was Durga Das Mishra. Some people believe that Durga Das was Vishnupriya's father. In the Prema-vilasa, the family of Durga Das Mishra's descendants through Yadavacharya is known as Vishnupriya's parivara.

Mahaprabhu's marriage to Vishnupriya Devi

Vrindavan Das Thakur describes the birth of Gaura-Narayan's sakti, Vishnupriya Devi, in his Chaitanya Bhagavata. Krishna Das Kaviraj Goswami has also mentioned the event in his Chaitanya Charitamrita.

In the Adi-khanda, the disappearance of Mahaprabhu's first wife is described, and then his second marriage to the daughter of the court pandit.
(Chaitanya Bhagavata 1.1.110)

Then the Lord was married to Vishnupriya Thakurani, after which He defeated the Digvijayi Pandit.
(Chaitanya Charitamrita 1.16.25)

For the materialistic person, the marriage of a man and woman is the source of bondage. When the Lord marries in imitation of ordinary mortals, it becomes something quite different: it is a transcendental affair. By chanting and hearing about the union of the Supreme Lord with His divine potency, one is liberated from the material energy.

Whoever hears about the holy pastime of the Lord's marriage will be liberated from his bondage to this world. Lakshmi sat beside the Lord and the house of Sachi was filled with light.
(Chaitanya Bhagavata 1.10.110-1)

All who saw the Lord's effulgent form on that day were freed from their sins and went to Vaikuntha. This is why the Lord is known as the merciful Lord of the fallen.
(Chaitanya Bhagavata 1.15.216-7)

Mahaprabhu's first wife, Lakshmipriya, left the world prematurely. In order to support her and His mother, Mahaprabhu made a trip to eastern Bengal to teach some students. However, He was away longer than planned and Lakshmipriya Devi found it impossible to tolerate His absence. So, meditating on His lotus feet, she departed from this world. When Mahaprabhu finally arrived back in Nabadwip, He found His mother grieving for her daughter-in-law.

Though Mahaprabhu consoled her with spiritual instructions, soon afterwards, Sachi Mata started looking for another wife for her son. For that purpose, she consulted Kashinatha Pandit, a well-known matchmaker described in Gaura-ganoddesa-dipika (50) as having been Kulaka in Krishna lila. Kulaka was the Brahmin who was sent by Satrajit to arrange the marriage between his daughter Satyabhama and Krishna. Kashinath went to the court pandit Sanatan Mishra and his daughter, the devotionally minded Vishnupriya. Kashinath persuaded Sanatan Mishra with the following words:

"Give your daughter to Vishwambhar Pandit; it is a perfect combination. She alone is worthy of such a divine husband, while He deserves just such a pious and chaste wife. Vishnupriya and Nimai Pandit are worthy of each other, just as Rukmini and Krishna were."
(Chaitanya Bhagavata 1.15.57-59)

From her very early childhood, Vishnupriya Devi had been deeply devoted to her parents and to Vishnu. She would take bath in the Ganga three times daily. Sachi Mata would see her there and bless her when she saw her paying obeisances. Sachi thus already knew Vishnupriya's good qualities and happily agreed to accept her as a wife for her son.

Buddhimata Khan was a rich and wise friend of Nimai's family who volunteered to bear the entire expense of His marriage. Once it had been decided that Vishnupriya and Vishvambhar would be married, an auspicious day and moment were fixed for the ceremony. With great pomp, the adhivasa rituals were carried out on the eve of the marriage. The Lord arrived at Sanatan Mishra's house in a palanquin at dusk and Gaura and Vishnupriya's wedding ceremony was performed according to both scriptural and popular traditions.

On the following day, Vishnupriya joined her new husband on the palanquin and returned with Him to His house. Those who hear the eternal pastime of the wedding of Lakshmi and Narayan lose their desire for a material relationship of enjoyer and enjoyed, for they come to understand that Narayan alon is the supreme enjoyer of the entire universe. For his service, Buddhimata Khan received Mahaprabhu's embrace and mercy.

Vrindavan Das describes how the pious women who saw the newly, weds compared them to various heavenly couples:

Some said, "They remind me of Gauri and Shiva." Others said, "It seems that they are Lakshmi and Narayan." Yet others said, "No, they rather resemble Rati and Kamadeva." Some compared them to Indra and Sachi, and others to Rama and Sita.
(Chaitanya Bhagavata 1.15.205-8)

Vishnupriya Devi after Nimai's sannyas

When Mahaprabhu left home to go to Katwa and take sannyas, He was only 24 years old. Lochan Das Thakur has described Vishnupriya's terrible feelings of separation in the days that followed His departure in the Chaitanya-mangala:

The earth split from the sound of Vishnupriya's crying: the birds and beasts, even the trees and stones shed tears when they heard it. Falling to the ground she would lament, crying out "Why does my sinful life not end?" In separation, her breath was like fire drying her lips and her body trembled constantly.
(2.14.15-6)

The Advaita-prakasa also describes how Vishnupriya lived her life in terrible separation from the Lord after His departure. Every morning, she would go for her bath in the Ganges with mother Sachi, after which she spent the entire day inside the house, never allowing the moon or sun to see her. Not even the devotees were allowed to see anything more than her feet, nor hear her voice. Constantly shedding tears and eating only Mother Sachi's remnants, she became pale and thin. She took intense delight in the Holy Name, chanting all day long in solitude before a portrait of Gauranga, serving it as though He were present in it and surrendering herself to His lotus feet. In this way, she demonstrated the ideal character of a devoted wife as well as the forbearance spoken of by the Lord in His verse, trnad api sunicena taror iva sahisnuna.

Srinivas Acharya would come to see her. He observed her daily activities, which are beyond description. She had completely renounced sleep, and if ever she closed her eyes, it would be while lying on the bare ground. Her bodily luster, which had formerly glowed more brilliantly than gold, had become dull and she was as thin as the waning moon on its fourteenth day. She set aside grains of rice to count the Holy Names she chanted, and would cook only rice and offer it to her Lord. Of this amount, she would only eat a small portion. No one understood how she managed to stay alive.
(Bhakti-ratnakara 4.47-51)

Jahnava Devi's disciple Nityananda Das has also described the standard Vishnupriya Devi set for bhajan in his Prema-vilasa.

Listen, brothers, to the way which Isvari Vishnupriya would take the names of the Lord. By listening to this, you will get a feeling for the lila. Every day she would place two clay pots on either side of her, one filled with uncooked rice, the other empty. Each time she completed on mantra of sixteen names and thirty-two syllables, she would joyfully place a grain of rice into the empty container. She would chant in this way until three o'clock in the afternoon, and then would take whatever rice had accumulated and cook it. This is the only food that she prepared, drenching it with her tears before she offered it to the Lord. It is not possible to estimate how many names Mahaprabhu Himself chanted, for He chanted all day and night. Similarly, His beloved wife Vishnupriya chanted incessantly through the day and the night. Such dedication to the Holy Name was not impossible for her, for the Lord had planted the seed of His power in her.

It is said that Vishnupriya Devi was the first to establish worship of a murti of Gauranga. This has been stated in Murari Gupta's diary, karaca:

prakasa-rupena nija-priyayah
samipam asadya nijam hi murtim
vidhaya tasyam sthita esa krsnah
sa laksmi-rupa ca nisevate prabhum

Krishna came to His beloved wife in this expansion form to remain by her side as the Mahaprabhu deity. Thus she, the incarnation of the goddess of fortune, was able to serve Him constantly.

The devotees of Mahaprabhu sometimes say that just as Ramachandra, who had taken the vow of monogamy, performed a sacrifice to a golden Sita made during His exile in the forest rather than marry a second time, so Vishnupriya repaid her debt to her Lord in the pastime of Gaura-Narayan by having an image of Mahaprabhu created so she could perform the sacrifice of the Holy Name to Him. This deity is still present and worshiped in Nabadwip.

Sri Vamsivadana Thakur and Ishan Thakur were blessed by the service of caring for Vishnupriya Devi and Sachi Devi after Mahaprabhu took sannyas.

overflowing with tears. She was chanting Gour-nm. The tears of prem bathed her bosom and she repeatedly paid obeisance to Neelchal Dhm. Poet Balarm ds has drawn a beautiful picture –

“bishnupriy nababl, hte loye japaml,

Rui rui jope gour nm,

Nobeen jogini dhani, birahini knglini,

Pronomeya neelchala dhm.

Sarba ange dhool mkh, lamb kesh elochul,

Sonar anga ati durbal,

Balarm ds koy, shuno prabhu doymoy,

Muchhye do debi nkhi-jol.”

Meaning – “Bishnupriy, who was still at a very tender age, held a japa-ml in her hand. She was crying while she chanted Gour-nm. Separated from her Beloved she was a young yogini. Stripped of her most precious possession, she repeatedly paid obeisance to Neelchal-Dhm. She was bathed in dust, and her long lustrous hair was disheveled. He golden form had weakened. Balarm das is praying – My dear Lord! please wipe her tears with your own lotus hands.”

"Towards the end of the period between four-thousand to five thousand years in Kali-yuga, I will descend on the earth as Gauranga, a golden-complexioned saintly brahmana in a place by the Ganges' shore and later become the crest-jewel of all sannyasis, exhibiting all My transcendental qualities including supreme renunciation and complete detachment from material desires. In the form of Lord Gauranga, I will display all the thirty-two bodily symptoms of a great personality with my arms extending to my knees. I will become my own devotee, very advanced in bhakti-yoga and teach the worship of Lord Krsna (Myself) by the chanting of My own holy names and relishing the mellows of My own devotional service. At that time only My most confidential devotees will be able to understand Me." (Atharva Veda, third khanda, Brahma-vibhaga)

Caitanya Upanisad of Atharva Veda (the whole text), note: This Upanisad is not found in standard lists.

atra brahma-puram nama

In that place [where Sri Caitanya appears] is a wonderful city like an eight-petal lotus flower. (commentary of Bhaktivinoda Thakura on Chandogya Upanisad 8.1.1 of Sama Veda)

In the middle of that lotus-city is a place called Mayapura, and in the middle of Mayapura is a place called Antardvipa. That place is the home of Lord Caitanya, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. (commentary of Bhaktivinoda Thakura on Chandogya Upanisad 8.1.2)

In the Kali-yuga, Supreme Lord will appear in a brahmana's family. He will teach the message of the Upanisads and the dharma-sastras. He will defeat the atheists and offenders and He will establish the truth of Vaisnava-dharma. (Krsna Upanisad 2.6, confirmed editions: The Vaisnava Upanishads English Translation (Ramanathan)

mahan prabhur vai purusah
sattvasyaisa pravartakah
sunirmalam imam praptim
isano jyotir avyayah

The Supreme Personality of Godhead is Mahaprabhu [Lord Caitanya], who disseminates transcendental enlightenment. Just to be in touch with Him is to be in contact with the indestructible brahmajyoti. (Svetasvatara Upanisad 3.12 of Yajur Veda)

Smrti:

In this way, my Lord, You appear in various incarnations as a human being, an animal, a great saint, a demigod, a fish or a tortoise, thus maintaining the entire creation in different planetary systems and killing the demoniac principles. According to the age, O my Lord, You protect the principles of religion. In the age of Kali, however, You do not assert Yourself as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and therefore You are known as Triyuga, or the Lord who appears in three yugas. (Srimad-Bhagavatam 7.9.38, Prahlada Maharaja speaks to Lord Nrsimhadeva)

This boy [Krsna] has three other colors - white, red and yellow - as He appears in different ages. Now He has appeared in a transcendental blackish color. (Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.8.13, Gargamuni speaks to Nanda Maharaja)

krsna-varnam tvisakrsnam

In the age of Kali, intelligent persons perform congregational chanting to worship the incarnation of Godhead who constantly sings the name of Krsna. Although His complexion is not blackish, He is Krsna Himself. He is accompanied by His associates, servants, weapons and confidential companions. (Srimad-Bhagavatam 11.5.32, Karabhajana Muni speaks to King Nimi)

My dear Lord, You are the Maha-purusa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and I worship Your lotus feet, which are the only eternal object of meditation. Those feet destroy the embarrassing conditions of material life and freely award the greatest desire of the soul, the attainment of pure love of Godhead. My dear Lord, Your lotus feet are the shelter of all holy places and of all saintly authorities in the line of devotional service and are honored by powerful demigods like Lord Siva and Lord Brahma. My Lord, You are so kind that You willingly protect all those who simply bow down to You with respect, and thus You mercifully relieve all the distress of Your servants. In conclusion, my Lord, Your lotus feet are actually the suitable boat for crossing over the ocean of birth and death, and therefore even Lord Brahma and Lord Siva seek shelter at Your lotus feet. (Srimad-Bhagavatam 11.5.33)

O Mahapurusa, I worship Your lotus feet. You gave up the association of the goddess of fortune and all her opulence, which is most difficult to renounce and is hankered after by even the great demigods. Being the most faithful follower of the path of religion, You thus left for the forest in obedience to a brahmana's curse. Out of sheer mercifulness You chased after the fallen conditioned souls, who are always in pursuit of the false enjoyment of illusion, and at the same time engaged in searching out Your own desired object, Lord Syamasundara. To show mercy to the people and give them devotional service, the Supreme Personality of Godhead will appear in a brahmana's home in Navadvipa by the Ganges' shore. The Supreme Person, Sri Krsna Himself, who is the life of Srimati Radharani, and is the Lord of the universe in creation, maintenance, and annihilation, appears as Gaura, O Mahesvari.

In Kali-yuga, I will descend to the earth with My associates. In Navadvipa, which is surrounded by the Ganges, I will take birth in Sacidevi's womb.

They who are bewildered by My illusory potency will not understand the great secret of the appearance in this world of Me in My personal form, in My form as the incarnation of devotion, in My form as the incarnation of a devotee, in My form bearing the name of a devotee, in My form as a devotee, and in My form as the giver of devotional service.

This secret is not to be revealed to them. Only the saintly, pure, renounced devotees, diligently engaged in My devotional service, will be able to understand Me in these five forms.

My dear male and female associates, headed by Sridama and Subala, who came to this world at the time of My advent as Lord Krsna, will come again during the Kali-yuga.

The gopas will become the sixty-four mahantas and the twelve gopalas. To establish the truth of religion, I will enjoy many pastimes with them.

In this way I will again reveal the path of devotional service, which has been destroyed in the course of time. My sons should also descend to the earth, assume the forms of devotees, and, by My order, also work to re-establish the principles of true religion.

At this time My names will be: Krsna Caitanya, Gauranga, Gauracandra, Sacisuta, Mahaprabhu, Gaura and Gaurahari. Chanting these names will bring devotion to Me.

Such a person is most degraded among human beings. He or she will burn in a terrible hell until the time when the universe is flooded with water."

nanda-gopa-sutam caiva
namasyami gadagrajam

With great devotion and folded hands, one should recite the following prayer before Lord Gauranga, whose limbs are as effulgent as molten gold: 'I offer my respectful obeisances to Lord Gauranga-Krsna, the son of the Nanda Maharaja and the elder brother of Gada. (Brahma-yamala tantra)

kalau prathama-sandhyayam
hari-nama-pradayakah
bhavisyati navadvipe
saci-garbhe janardanah

In the first sandhya of Kali-yuga, Lord Krsna will appear in Navadvipa, in Sacidevi's womb. In that incarnation He will teach the chanting of Lord Hari's holy names.

anyavatara bahavah
sarve sadharana matah
kalau krsnavataras tu
gudhah sannyasa-vesa-dhrk

Lord Krsna descends to the world in many different forms. However in Kali-yuga, His incarnation is hidden. At that time He appears disguised as a sannyasi. (Jaimini-bharata)

kvacit sapi krsnam aha
srnu mad-vacanam priya
bhavata ca sahaikatmyam
icchami bhavitum prabho

mama bhavanvitam rupam
hrdayahlada-karanam
parasparanga-madhya-stham

paraspara-svabhavadhyam

srutva tu preyasi-vakyam
parama-priti-sucakam

svecchayasid yatha purvam

premalingana-yogena
hy acintya-sakti-yogatah

radha-bhava-kanti-yuktam
murtim ekam prakasayan
svapne tu darsayam asa
radhikayai svayam prabhuh

Then Sri Radha said to Lord Krsna: 'O beloved, please hear My words. I yearn to become one with you. Please show a form where You and I embrace and Our two bodies become one, a form filled with the love I bear for You, a form filled with auspicious and blissful pastimes, a form that brings bliss to the heart, a form that unites Our two natures.'

Hearing His beloved's words, which were filled with joy and love, Lord Krsna passionately embraced Her. Then by the touch of His inconceivable potency Their two forms joined and became one, a single form endowed with Sri Radha's divine love and glorious splendor. In a dream Lord Krsna showed all this to Sri Radha. (Kapila tantra)

aham purno bhavisyami
yuga-sandhau visesatah
mayapure navadvipe
varam ekam saci-sutah

During the first sandhya of Kali-yuga I will descend, with all My powers and glories, to Mayapura in Navadvipa and become the son of Sacidevi. (Krsna-yamala tantra)

punya-ksetre navadvipe
bhavisyami saci-sutah

I shall appear in the holy land of Navadvipa as the son of Sacidevi. (Krsna-yamala tantra)

iti matva krpa-sindhur
amsena krpaya harih
prasanno bhakta-rupena
kalav avatarisyati

Thinking in this way, Lord Krsna, who is an ocean of mercy, mercifully decided to appear as a devotee in Kali-yuga. (Krsna-yamala tantra)

gauranga nada gambhirah
svanamamrta lalasah
dayaluh kirtana grahi
bhavisyati saci-sutah

Merciful Lord Gauranga, who has a deep voice, will appear as the son of Sacidevi. He is eager to taste the nectar of His own names and thus engages in chanting them. (Krsna-yamala tantra 64)

matva tvanmayam atmanam
pathan dvayaksaram ucyate
gata trapo madonmatto
gaja vad vicarisyati

He (Krsna) will consider Himself as You (Radha). In this mood He will loudly recite two syllables, krs-na, and being shamelessly intoxicated He will wander like an elephant. (Krsna-yamala tantra 65)

bhuvani prapte tu govindas
caitanyakhyo bhavisyati
ansena bhuvi yasyanti
tatra tat purvaparsada

When Lord Govinda appears on earth, He will be known as Caitanya. At that time His associates also appear on earth in their expansions. (Krsna-yamala tantra 66)

kalau purandarat sacyam
gaura-rupo vibhu smrtah

In Kali-yuga I will appear in a golden form as the son of Purandara and Sacidevi. (Urdhvamnaya tantra)

navadvipa-samam sthanam
sri-gauranga-samah prabhuh
krsna-prema-sama praptir
nasti durge kadacana

O Durga, no place in the creation is equal to Navadvipa, no master is as merciful as Lord Sri Gauranga, and no attainment in the whole world is equal to pure love for Krsna. (Urdhvamnaya tantra)

krsna-caitanya-namna ye
kirttayanti sakrnnarah
nanaparadha-muktas te
punanti sakalam jagat

A person who even once chants the name of Krsna Caitanya becomes free from all offenses and purifies the whole universe. (Visnu-yamala tantra)

kaleh prathama-sandhyayam
gaurango 'sau mahi-tale
bhagirathi-tate ramye
bhavisyati sanatanah

In the first sandhya of Kali-yuga, on the earth, by the beautiful shore of the Ganges, the Lord will appear in His eternal golden form. (Yoga-vasistha)

Other direct references are found in the Visvasara tantra, Kularnava tantra, Brahma-rahasya, and Visnu-yamala. Besides these there are complete chapters about Sri Caitanya's incarnation in the Vayu Purana and Bhavisya Purana, which are too long to quote here. Also there is a text by the name Caitanya Upanisad within the Atharva Veda, which explains the Lord's incarnation in Kali-yuga. I have not cited it here, as it was rediscovered in recent times, so some people will reject its authenticity, or at least its value as evidence.

Sri Caitanya's incarnation was a hidden incarnation, thus He buried references to His appearance deep within the ocean of Vedic texts. His desire was that His disguise would not be betrayed, so He made sure these references would remain hidden until after His incarnation was complete. These texts were always present, but by the inconceivable yoga-maya of the Lord, He covered His true identity even from the Vedic scholars and panditas. Only the pure devotees understood His actual identity.
