David Haye to fight Wladimir Klitschko |
David Haye's proposed world heavyweight title fight with Vitali Klitschko, the World Boxing Council champion, was derailed on Tuesday.
Bernd Bonte, the Ukrainian's agent, revealed that a contest with WBC mandatory challenger Juan Carlos Gomez is to go ahead.
It now appears that Haye's title tilt could be switched to a contest against Vitali's younger brother, Wladimir, the International Boxing Federation and World Boxing Organisation champion.
Haye, and his manager/trainer Adam Booth, thought a deal to meet Vitali in London in June was agreed, but the 37-year-old has now been scheduled to meet the Spain-based Cuban challenger either in Hamburg or Stuttgart on March 21.
The Klitschkos, nonetheless, want Wladimir to face Haye. A source within the Haye camp revealed to Telegraph Sport on Tuesday night that talks have been ongoing to make the fight happen.
That looks probable after Wladimir failed this week to confirm he will take on American Chris Arreola in his next fight, urging fans to wait for any official announcements regarding their reported meeting in Los Angeles on May 16.
