Cape Arrt, Chenin Blanc, 2022, Western Cape, South Africa

Lion's Head hike, Cape Town a 2023 hiking guide

The fastest route to Lion’s Head during rush hour, is to take either a motorbike up Kloof Nek Road, turn right at Signal Hill Road. The other fastest route to Lion’s Head is via Main Road or Beach Road in Sea Point. Take the other fastest route to Victoria Road, Camps Bay, turn left up Lower Kloof Nek Road, turn right onto Kloof Nek Road, follow the road to the intersection. Lion’s Head parking will be around 100 meters on your right, the trail starts next to Lion’s Head parking. A guided adventure tour with our professional guide affords you the pleasure of not thinking about things such as the directions to Lion’s Head mountain. Not staying in Cape Town central but still want to join a hike?
On the right hand side of Table Mountain, behind Signal Hill, is the distinctive shaped mountain slope, Lions Head. It was originally given the name by the 17th century Dutch settlers, as it resembles a crouching lion. This proud lion overlooks the city and Table Bay on one side, and the scenic Atlantic Ocean coastline on the other. My name is Pericles Rosa and I’ve been to over 50 countries.

It is important to carefully review the terms and conditions of your tour package before booking. Adding the Lion’s Head hike to your Cape Town itinerary is a must-do activity, as it offers a unique perspective of the city and its natural beauty. Guided tours are available for those who want a more in-depth and educational experience, with personalized attention and safety tips. The hike is well-maintained and equipped with chains and steps for assistance, making it accessible for people of all fitness levels.
However, unless travelling in larger groups, I would not recommend taking the train around the city, for example to Simon’s Town. Many visitors travel to Cape Town and proudly declare it as one of their favourite places in the world. The amazing thing about this, is that it can be for very different reasons.

The view was so clear that I could see Table Mountain on my left-hand side as I walked up the hill. Wear hiking shoes or trainers and bring a backpack along with water bottles, snacks, a sun blocker and a small towel. After the steps, there are some ladders, staples and chains that you need to climb and hold on to in order to get to Lion’s Head summit. But if you aren’t an adventure seeker and an active person, you might find some parts a bit challenging. Lion’s Head is covered with fynbos and its peak stands at 669m above sea level. In this post, I will tell you everything that you need to know about hiking Lion’s Head, including height, price, safety, if you can do it alone, etc.
That’s great, we invite you to find directions below and meet us at Hike Lion’s Head address. Be sure to book a hike in advance, even an hour before so we know you are coming. We have seen an increase in hikers joining us, at Hike Lion’s Head physical address, coming from outside Cape Town.
Hikers should be well prepared with comfortable clothing, appropriate hiking shoes, water and sunscreen. Lion’s Head has an elevation of 669 metres above sea level, making it a little lower than its neighbouring Table Mountain. It is adorned by the endemic fynbos for which parts of South Africa have become famous; a colourful, scrubby vegetation that is as varied as it is beautiful. Hikers should also look out for the little dassies , as well as the bird species that call this home.

When looking for a guided tour, I recommend going for a small group tour. Depending on your needs, you can choose between tours including transportation and without transportation. The circular route can also be done without hiking to the top of Lion’s Head, so this is a great option for all levels of fitness, as well as children and dogs. If you skip hiking to the summit of the mountain, the circular route is only 4 km (2.5 miles).
Lion’s Head is one of the most popular hikes in Cape Town for tourists and locals alike. One of the biggest benefits of Lion’s Head is its accessibility. The trail is located just minutes from the city center, making it easy to reach and ideal for those who want to experience the beauty of Cape Town in a single day. The trail itself is well-maintained and well-signposted, making it easy to follow even for first-time visitors.

These locations are the addresses where self-drive clients meet us at the Lion’s Head hike trail. If self-drive, please use the contact form to establish self drive booking, then use the Directions to Lion’s Head hike from Cape Town, to meet us at the addresses. Enter the destination in the app, Lion’s Head parking, Signal Hill Road, Cape Town. Your origin is the place where the taxi will find and collect you.
Just because Lion’s Head is considered one of Cape Town’s easier hiking trails, doesn’t mean it should be underestimated. There is still a fair bit of mountain to climb as well as a few tough edges to manoeuvre around. You will also encounter a number of very steep passages towards the top of the mountain that are harder to navigate. As you get closer to the summit it gets rockier and steeper, this is a climb of almost 670 metres after all. However, don’t let the difficulty deter you, the view from the top far surpasses the strain of the hike. As Lion’s Head forms part of the renowned Table Mountain National Park, it boasts a rich biodiversity and diverse fauna and flora display.
Get started with climbing Lions Head while our team of experts takes care of your safety. Hike Lion’s Head – is excited to take you on a guided hike up one of Cape Town’s best hiking trails. We specialise in the Lion’s Head trail, always ready for the next adventure lions head hike with the people who come to join our hiking tours.

It's a peaceful and serene experience, and a great way to unwind after a busy day exploring the city. I don’t know if the bridge left wing is the Bass River Bridge, however Cape Town Attractions it must be. We enjoyed a fly fisherman there as he made cast after cast. Peg asked him if he had actually captured anything and he stated, “Yes. I got five stripahs.” The translation for that comment is that he had actually caught 5 “stripers” or rather five striped bass. The New England and Boston accents make you listen more attentatively.

Sunrise and sunset are the best times to hike Lion’s Head in Cape Town. Because the route winds around the side of the mountain and doesn’t have much shade, it can get pretty hot mid-day. We started an hour and a half before the sun came up and made it to summit just in time to witness the most gorgeous sunrise. The Lion’s Head hiking trail starts directly at the Lion’s Head parking lot which can easily be reached by car from the city center.

Lions Head Walk in Cape Town

It starts on the gravel road continues up the stairs and finishes with a rocky path and ladders. The last part involves a bit of climbing regardless of which route you choose. Families with children as well as highly inexperienced hikers with less than optimal fitness levels should stick to the spiral route . You should allow for three hours or more, especially if you want to take it easy and admire all the beautiful scenery and views along the way.
Your children will be too short to reach the aluminum steps on the rocks at the chain part and it is steep and can be quite unsafe then. Both routes then meet again for the final stretch to the top. The rocks here are rather large and as I am short I use my hands to help climb and lift myself here. If the child struggle I guess you can just lift them up and down if one of the patents go in front and one behind. It always seems to me the children are fine and the parents are the ones struggling Just take note this section is more tricky than one thinks but definitely do-able.

If you’re in the city and craving a nature fix, then this small reserve on the lowest slopes of Table Mountain is your solution. You can walk your dogs or just go for a stroll in this forested area. Once you’ve walked up a bit, you’ll have a clear view of the mountain right ahead, and here you can choose to link up to a longer hike if you’re up for it. Skeleton Gorge is a scenic trek that's ideal in dry conditions. During the summer months, there is shade along the Afromontane forest nearly all the way up Skeleton Gorge.
The only downside is that you will have to get up very early. The hike itself is all about the views – right from the start and all the way up to the top, the trail boasts incredible views. So, the trail itself is already worth being part of everyone’s Cape Town itinerary. For those who have a fear of heights, it’s recommended to take the roundabout footpath to avoid the more intense sections of the trail. Towering over Cape Town and offering some very popular trails is one of Cape Town’s greatest icons – Lion’s Head. A hike up the mountain is an absolute must for visitors and locals alike, but there are a few things you need to know before you conquer the beast.

Always pack warm tops, a beany hat is a good idea as well. Despite these challenges, South Africa has a vibrant economy that is driven by a diverse range of industries, including mining, agriculture, tourism, and manufacturing. You'll pass through a variety of terrain, including chai and rocky scrambling, so be sure to bring comfortable shoes and plenty of water.
Let me know when you’ve done Lions Head and how your experience was. I would also suggest an early morning hike on a morning with no wind. There are soooo many people hiking on the weekends that you will not feel unsafe. I do hope this post showed you some of our beautiful views and that you will give it a try when visiting. For a quick hike and relatively easy hike you get rewarded big time – not something you find to often on ‘shorter’ hikes. We went up for a sunset and watched the sky turn red and pink and eventually black with golden city lights filling the night.
It really is nothing to be scared of, but do take your time if you find this kind of thing challenging. Table Mountain might be the face of Cape Town, but Lion’s Head is the mane event! Cape Town is a city of unfathomable natural beauty; the best way to experience it is with a Lion’s Head Hike.

If you want a more immersive experience, you can opt for a guided hike up Lions Head. A professional guide will be able to point out interesting features along the way, as well as provide tips and tricks to make the most of your experience. One of the most popular is Platteklip Gorge, a pretty hike with a straight, steep ascent.
The hike takes only a couple of hours to complete and the scenery from on top of the mountain is nothing short of spectacular. To find the appropriate time it takes to hike Lion’s head, you will need to consider your fitness level as well as how many people are attending the hike, if in a group. See the many Cape Town attractions from above, with half a day of hiking.

You can read my detailed blog post here where I attempt to summarise everything I did in Cape Town. Situated along the West Coast in the little town of Mamre, this National Heritage Site has picnic spots, short trails and a 1.5-hour trail walk. The 254ha reserve has an abundance of vegetation and small animals such as caracals and various reptiles. You’ll need to hike up through the lower slopes of a fynbos-covered mountain near Kalk Bay before you reach the Spes Bona forest, but it’s worth the trek. A raised wooden walkway winds its way in among the old gnarled trees that are kept alive by the constant dripping of water running down the mossy cliff on the right.

Some Capetonian friends invited me to see the sunrise from Lion’s Head and I couldn’t refuse. Yet, it isn’t very hard and there is no reason to be afraid. You just need to step on the rocks carefully and use your hands. The last bit of the Lion’s Head hike may also seem frightening to many people. I hiked Lions Head alone for the first time at the end of winter in 2018. Whatever you decide, always check the weather forecast, as the weather changes quickly in Cape Town, wear appropriate clothes and bring plenty of water.

Just a disclaimer I do not have children yet, so I can only give advice on what I think and saw, not out of experience. I will definitely NOT do the ladder/chain part with the children. When you get to it there should be a route to the left as an alternative. I have never walked this part, but understands it is ‘safer’ and a bit longer.

If you’re not an experienced climber, go with someone who has done the route before, as it can be steep and tricky. This is also in the Silvermine Nature Reserve, but on the side overlooking Muizenberg. It offers fantastic views, interesting rock formations and plenty of untouched fynbos. The slopes on the east side are covered in ericas in various shades of pink, depending on the season, while leucadendrons and Asteraceae provide a splash of yellow in spring.
And at African Lynx, we believe that you deserve nothing less. That’s why we create multi-day, private guided travel experiences that are so immersive, you won’t know whether you’re going home or leaving home when you’re done. Before turning the next bend around the spiral up the mountain, you’ll see Sea Point, Signal Hill and Robben Island. The City Bowl and the V&A Waterfront greet you around the bend.
Hiking safety also means knowing which route you will be taking, as Lions Head has many. We recommend booking a hike to get the most out of your Lions Head experience. There are two trails which lions head hike we outline in the heading, “Different trails for Lion’s Head hike. A guided hike takes you on up to two different routes in one hike, as a way to see it all from on top of Lion’s Head mountain.

Il Mio Appassimento Segreto Rosso, Contessa Carola, Puglia, Italy

2. San Valentin, Garnacha, 2021, Catalunya, Spain.
