Crochet Pattern - Sunglasses Case

5177462_10340 (468x577, 148Kb)5177462_10340_1_ (468x577, 148Kb)

While I was being distracted last week from my granny squares I came across this post by Meredith over at One Sheepish Girl and fell a little bit in love with her knitted sunglasses case. So with my lovely new wool I started playing around with stitches to create my own (crocheted) sunglasses case and this is what I came up with...

...I'm not sure how much use I'll get out of this with this wet British summer we seem to be having but I love it all the same, as do my sunglasses!  It's worked up entirely of bobble stitches so it's very tactile and protective.  I've attempted to write out the pattern below if you'd like to try one.

My bag is packed I'm ready for summer, although I fear I may have a while to wait...

Crochet Sunglasses Case Pattern

This case measures approximately 18cm by 9cm when it is completed. It is probably a little long, depending on the type of glasses you have, mine are fairly large so it worked out fine for me. But measure your glasses before you start and if you'd like to make it narrower decrease the foundation chain in multiples of 2 (don't forget to +2 for turning), a bit shorter just skip some of the rows. This pattern is basically rows of bobbles between rows of double crochet, it's very simple once you get started. There are a few pictures below to help.

When you are working your bobbles they should all appear to the back of your work, when you dc across a row the bobbles will be facing you. Keep the turning chains fairly loose so they are easy to stitch into on the next row.

Written in UK terms

Hook: 4mm

Yarn: I used Rooster almerino dk (50% baby alpaca, 50% merino wool) as this is what I was making my blanket with but I think this would work quite well (and be less expensive) with acrylic. Use 3 colours labelled here as A (main colour), B & C

Stitches:

Ch = Chain

Htr = Half treble crochet (US HDC)

Dc = Double crochet (US SC)

Tr = treble crochet (US DC)

Bobble Stitch = tr5tog (*Yarn over hook insert into stitch, pull up a loop, yarn over hook, pull through 2 stitches*, repeat from *to* X4 until you have 6 stitches on hook, yarn over hook, pull through all 6 stitches)

You will need to create two of the following:

Using Colour A,

Foundation Rows: Ch 15 + 2 turn, htr in 3rd stitch from hook and each stitch along (15) ch 3, turn.

Row 1, *Bobble into next stitch (see description above), dc into next stitch,* repeat from *to* x5, bobble into next stitch, tr into last stitch, ch 1 (Keep this fairly loose), turn. (You should have worked a total of 7 bobbles if you started with a Ch15 +2)

Row 2, Dc into same stitch (you may have to turn your work slightly when working this row as the stitches will be towards the back of the peice), dc into each stitch along, (make sure your last dc is worked into the top of the ch3 from the previous row - this stitch can be quite tight. You should have 15 stitches) Ch 3, turn.

Row 3, *Bobble into next stitch, dc into next stitch* Repeat from *to* x5, bobble into next stitch, tr into last stitch (this should be the 1st dc from the previous round again this can be tight if you've made your turning ch tight) Ch1, turn.

Row 4, Repeat Row 2

Row 5, Repeat Row 3

Row 6, Repeat Row 2 but instead of ch 3 and turning for next round, finish off at the end of this row, leave a tail long enough for sewing in.

Switch to colour B

Row 7, With bobbles facing back insert colour B into 1st stitch and Ch 3, *Bobble into next stitch, dc into next stitch,* repeat from *to* x5, bobble into next stitch, tr into last stitch (Keep this fairly loose), ch 1, turn. (You should have worked a total of 7 bobbles)

Row 8, Repeat row 2 but instead of ch 3 and turning for next round, finish off at the end of this row, leave a tail long enough for sewing in.

Switch to Colour C

Row 9, with bobbles facing back insert colour C into 1st stitch and Ch 3, *Bobble into next stitch, dc into next stitch,* repeat from *to* x5, bobble into next stitch, tr into last stitch (Keep this fairly loose), ch 1, turn. (You should have worked a total of 7 bobbles)

Row 10, Repeat row 2 but instead of ch3 and turning for next round, finish off at the end of this row, leave a tail long enough for sewing in.

Switch back to colour A

Row 11, with bobbles facing back insert colour A into 1st stitch and Ch 3, *Bobble into next stitch, dc into next stitch,* repeat from *to* x5, bobble into next stitch, tr into last stitch (Keep this fairly loose), ch 1, turn. (You should have worked a total of 7 bobbles)

Row 12, Repeat row 2

Row 13, Repeat row 3

Row 14, Repeat row 2 but instead of ch 3 and turning for next round, finish off at the end of this row, leave a tail long enough for sewing in.

Switch to colour B

Row 15, With bobbles facing back insert colour B into 1st stitch and Ch 3, *Bobble into next stitch, dc into next stitch,* repeat from *to* x5, bobble into next stitch, tr into last stitch (Keep this fairly loose), ch 1, turn. (You should have worked a total of 7 bobbles)

Row 16, Repeat row 2 but instead of ch 3 and turning for next round, finish off at the end of this row, leave a tail long enough for sewing in.

Switch to Colour C

Row 17, with bobbles facing back insert colour C into 1st stitch and Ch 3, *Bobble into next stitch, dc into next stitch,* repeat from *to* x5, bobble into next stitch, tr into last stitch (Keep this fairly loose), ch 1, turn. (You should have worked a total of 7 bobbles)

Row 18, Repeat row 2 but instead of ch3 and turning for next round, finish off at the end of this row, leave a tail long enough for sewing in.

Switch back to colour A

Rows 19, With bobbles facing back insert colour A into 1st stitch and Ch 3, *Bobble into next stitch, dc into next stitch,* repeat from *to* x5, bobble into next stitch, tr into last stitch (Keep this fairly loose), ch 1, turn.

Row 20, Repeat Row 2

Row 21, Repeat Row 3

Row 22, Repeat Row 2

Row 23, Repeat row 3 but Ch 2 at the end and turn

Row 24, Htr in same stitch and each stitch along, finish off and tie in ends.
