New York City (Midtown Manhattan)

Пятница, 29 Июля 2011 г. 17:13 + в цитатник

Hello, New York City, we meet again for the second time...

If you notice the lack of people in Times Square, it was 7:00 am in the morning, so nothing is open yet.

If you notice above the Toshiba signs where it says "2009", this marks the first time the crystal ball that comes down on New Year's Eve/Day along with the year lights stayed up there permanently.

Avenue of the Americas

Radio City Music Hall, the highest-grossing Performing Arts Center in the United States and likely the most famous

Zamboni's working on the ice in Rockefeller Center

Looking up at the GE Building, 9th tallest building in New York, built in 1933.

St. Patrick's Cathedral, completed in 1878.

St. Thomas Church, Fifth Avenue, built in 1823.

Fifth Avenue

Park Avenue looking towards the unimpressive MetLife Building, formerly PanAm Building, built in 1963.

The Hotel I stayed at, the Roosevelt Hotel, built in 1924, closed in 1995 and reopened in 1997 after a $65 million renovation. This was the first hotel in America to have ground retail AND where Guy Lombardo recorded his famous "Auld Lang Syne" song for New Year's.

Inside the Roosevelt Hotel, VERY NICE!

The view from my room

New York Public Library, built I think in 1895.

Looking south and up on Fifth Avenue towards the famous Empire State Building

Built in 1931, was the tallest building in the world until 1972. It is one of the seven wonders of the modern world.

Empire State Building Observation Deck Pictures

Financial District (Lower Manhattan)

Midtown and Times Square

Chrysler Building

Looking towards southeast Manhattan Island and the Boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens

Brooklyn and Queens

That is the Statue of Liberty through all that fog

Central Park, GE Building, and Upper West and East side

Looking west towards New Jersey

One Penn Center and Madison Square Garden, the round building

United Nations and back there is the Queensboro Bridge, connecting Manhattan with Queens.

Looking up at the antennae of the Empire State Building, doesn't go much higher than this, 86 stories.

Back at street level...Hotel Wolcott

Looking north on Fifth Avenue towards the Empire State Building...

Madison Square Park

New York Life Building, a National U.S. Landmark, built in 1928

Only time I went on the Subway north to Central Park, my feet were getting tired, these are the "Cleanest" shots I got

Park Avenue again

Buildings along 59th Street

The Famous Plaza Hotel, another National Landmark, built in 1907, only the filthy rich stay here.

Horse and Carriage

Central Park

Personally, I love this shot of the skating in the rink with part of Midtown skyline in the rear

Cute Pavilion, I believe Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen have held free concerts here before...

Beethoven Statue

I remember seeing this in Home Alone 2

About $10 million plus utilities will get you an apartment here...

Trump Tower

Ritz-Carlton Hotel

Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church (I think)

The hotel I stayed at, the Roosevelt Hotel, looking up...

The Famous Museum of Modern Art, I remember seeing this on an episode of Inspector Gadget and an episode of Family Guy, that's one reason I went there. It is one of the most influential museums in the world.

Lobby

This is no ordinary collection of furniture...

This would be for the true breakfast enthusiast...

Looks like a Mini-Guillotine

Paint Cans!!!

A 1981 exhibit by Techching Heish, a Taiwan-born artist... photographing himself in a prison for a full year...

Amazing how long his hair gets and yet his facial hair stays about the same...

I like this Number Pattern work by Jasper Johns

A Group Dance exhibit... called Huddle by Simone Forti

That's what's called AIM (Art in Motion)

Another AIM work by, I believe, Simone Forti herself called "Sounds", where hangs on a rope and many sounds play...

A skeletal chopper...

Looking outside, great view...

This, to me, really shows the diversity of New York City's architecture at street level...

I found this picture rather amusing, yet disturbing at the same level, and the weirdest thing about this, was that it reminded me of that SNL skit "Cluckin' Chicken" from SNL, guess what, I actually saw it the night of on a "Best Of Commercials" show of SNL... how funny is that?

This picture needs no description...

To me, this looks like a drive-in A&W Restaurant...

Who would want Lips for a chair?

A "fictional" skyscraper in New York...

Capsules, lit up

Model buildings...

A swiss-cheese style Empire State Building, take a close look...

A guy in Pittsburgh mowing a lawn, I'd love doing that everyday...

Mickey Mouse Color Palette, I heard it was stolen from a Home Depot in Upstate...

Andy Warhol's Campbell Soup Paintings, showing all the flavours of soup...

Andy Warhol's Marilyn Monroe Portrait...

I like this picture, a wholesome breakfast, that Fried Egg table would go with it nicely...

I believe this is by Salvador Dali...

A Picasso work...

Another Picasso work... he knows his shapes

This looks like a funky corporate logo...

A Fish...

Another fish, I thought it was a bowling pin...

Looking up at the MoMA offices...

I think this is around the Avenue of the Americas...

Radio City Music Hall... notice all the cabs around here, I would say at least 1/2 of all vehicles I see in NYC are cabs.

Applebee's... one of the few urban locations for an Applebee's you'll ever see...

The famous Ed Sullivan Theater, home of the Late Show with David Letterman

CBS Store...

Broadway at night, what a sight... I would love to see a Broadway show sometime...

Looking North on Broadway...

The World's Largest T.G.I Friday's or at least rumoured to be... I ate supper here, I stuck to the chain restaurants for my meals...

Times Square at night... quite the sight... It's a bigger, more urban version of Las Vegas...

I ate in that Olive Garden for supper the night after, first time I ever had Olive Garden, boy it was good...

NYC has many claims to fame, here's another one, the "Billboard Capital of the World"...

I didn't have a tripod with me, but it was so bright, and the camera is pretty good for night shots, even without a tripod, these pictures turned out good...

Finally, out of Times Square

Cute Clock on Fifth Avenue...

Looking at the Empire State Building...

Empire looking great at night... this shot I thought turned out real good...

The Chrysler Building and Grand Central Terminal...

My hotel again...

GE Building and Rockefeller Center...

More skating at Rockefeller Center, always a sight.

This and Central Park are two reasons why NYC may be considered a real family-friendly tourist draw...

Finally, one more time the view from my hotel room at night...

After departing my hotel room and getting back to Fifth Avenue, this is yet another "diversity" shot of NYC's architecture...

Rockefeller Center Ice Rink (AGAIN), I believe NBC did a special here before the game at MSG started...

Where "The Today Show" is broadcast...

Looking WAY up at the GE Building, it has an observation deck, but I didn't get a chance to go up it.

The classy famous entrance to NBC Studios, New York

Inside the NBC store, this logo made out of M&Ms, I thought they were Skittles...

Outside the Studio Tour Entrance, I couldn't take pictures due to copyright issues...

After the tour, went south on Fifth Avenue...

MetLife Building and Chrysler Building

Chrysler Building, completed in 1930 and was the tallest building in New York, before the Empire State Building in 1931.

Grand Central Terminal, opened in 1871, is where all the Amtrak and Rail trains, including Subway terminate, and is one of the most prestigous rail stations in the world.

Architecture and Eagles go hand in hand, much like football...

One Penn Center...

The World's Most Famous Arena, Madison Square Garden, this arena opened in 1968, the second-oldest arena in the National Hockey League. This is also the third arena built with that name... the others I believe have closed or torn down.

I remember shots from this angle during that memorable 1994 Stanley Cup Finals

A unique thing about this arena is that the rink and seats are above ground (elevated), I remember going up several flights of escalators to get to my seat.

Inside, getting to my seat...

For being in the 200 section and costing $120 for MSG, this is a great view, not a bad seat in the entire house.

The Rangers practising...

KING Henrik Lundquist... the fans chant his name all the time, he's a fan favorite...

The Bruins, apparently as I discovered, NY fans have a mutual hatred for Boston teams...

Hockey game and arena shots...

Opening faceoff...

First period action...

If I didn't know better I thought the ceiling of the arena was made of stained wood or something....

Bruins players, including Mark Recchi on the right...

Sean Avery is also a fan favorite here, too, at least this guy thinks so...

Second period action...

After the first period ended scoreless, Nik Antropov scored to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead... yes I was cheering for the Rangers

Boston answered quickly to tie it at 1.

SCRAP!!!

Nice scoreboard

John Tortorella and the Rangers players...

2-1 now...

After the Rangers scored making it 3-1, Fernandez didn't know whether to cry or wind his watch...

The Rangers won 4-3 in a wild affair... and the fans starting to chant, "BOSTON SUCKS!"

Rangers celebrate a much-earned victory...

All the Rangers players salute the fans after every home game, a great tradition...

MSG Concourse, after the game...

The Penn Hotel, directly across the street from MSG...

MSG one last time...

Streets lined with hockey fans, btw, yes there were some Boston fans in attendance, being as Boston is only about 200 miles from NYC.

Bryant Park...

I believe this is the American Radiator Building...

Bryant Park...

I believe the building on the left is a Chase Building, it reminds me a lot of the Chase Building in Rochester, New York, with its curved base...

More Bryant Park...

New York Public Library and Midtown western Skyline...

Bryant Park once more...

Looking down the street towards the Chrysler Building.
