Abbrev. MG. Latin: "grave muscle weakness" is a neuromuscular disease leading to fluctuating weakness andfatigability. At about 14 cases per 100,000 (in the U.S.), it is one of the best known autoimmune disorders. The antigensand basic disease mechanisms are known. Weakness is caused by circulating antibodies that block acetylcholinereceptors or the MuSK protein at the post-synaptic neuromuscular junction, inhibiting the stimulative effect of theneurotransmitter acetylcholine.Common symptoms: weakness of the eyes (drooping eyelids), double vision (caused by weak eye muscles), specifcmuscle fatigue after exercise, difficulty in speaking and swallowing, weakness of the arms and legs. 10% of the peopledevelop a life-threatening weakness of the muscle needed fro breathing, condition called myasthenic crisis.Women are more affected than men and the disease usually begins between the ages of 20-40..
