Economic system can be grouped into four broad categories: traditional economies, market economies, command economies & mixed economies. In traditional societies people use methods of production & distribution that were devised in the distant past. The division of land among the families in the village or tribe, times of planting&harvesting, the way in which the produce is distributed among the different groups are all based upon tradition. The production problems that is For Whom? are solved according to a person’s fixed place in social structure.
The market system of economic organization is commonly described as a free enterprise or capitalist existed. The market system contains six essential features. They are: private property; freedom of choice&enterprise; self-interest; competition; a reliance on the price system; a very limited role for government.
Private property means that individuals have the right to own, control & dispose of land, buildings, machinery & other. Freedom of enterprise means that individuals are free to buy & hire economic resources, to organize these resources for production.
Self-interest is based on the principle that individuals should be free is the motive for economic activity.
Competition is essentially price competition. Demand &supply determine the market price. Strictly speaking the pure market of system has never existed.
Planned economy is sometimes called command economy. Planned economies are economies with a large amount of central planning and direction. A planned economy is simple to understand but not simple to operate. The major problem command or planned economies face what goods and services to produce. Command economies tend to be slow when responding to changes in people’s tastes and trends. Between the 2 main types lies the mixed economy where market and government are both of importance.
