YAY! съезжай уже от мамы

ACTOR Colin Morgan is most famous for playing the title role in the BBC1 fantasy adventure series Merlin, which follows the early years of the sorcerer at Camelot.

Born in Armagh, Northern Ireland, the 23-year-old has also appeared on the Catherine Tate Show and in the acclaimed Doctor Who episode Midnight in 2008.

The second series of Merlin recently ended on BBC1 and will be out on DVD in February. A third series has been commissioned and in a new interview, Colin has spoken about what's coming and also what he would like to see in the show.

HOW DID WORKING ON THE SECOND SERIES OF MERLIN COMPARE TO THE FIRST RUN?
When we first started on the series, filming was new to me. So whenever you start on a second series you're familiar with the technical things for a start. Also there's the character - you know how to approach a scene, you know how to work with other actors. You also become a bit more confident with the guest stars, even though with the guest stars we get coming in, you sort of pinch yourself sometimes.

WHO DID YOU PARTICULARLY ENJOY WORKING WITH?
Charles Dance was brilliant, he played the Witchfinder in one of the episodes and he just had a lot of fun with it - and was genuinely quite intimidating. Mackenzie Crook (pictured below) was great in the first episode. I had a lot of fun with him because he had a lot of fun with the role. The guest star in the final episode, John Lynch, was probably my favourite because I got to work with him quite a lot.

DO YOU OFTEN WATCH MERLIN TO EXAMINE YOUR PERFORMANCE?
With this kind of show it's kind of hard to actually study your performance. I think you shouldn't really try to do that, because so much stuff is done in post-production with Merlin, in terms of special effects and music. When you watch it back you're often seeing yourself in a scene with a monster or creature that obviously wasn't there when you were doing it.

IS IT DIFFICULT ACTING TO A GREEN SCREEN SO MUCH OF THE TIME?
It depends. I've got a lot of scenes with a dragon, and now that I know what the dragon looks like, and because I do it so many times, that's definitely easier. But often with any new creatures introduced in the show, you really don't know what sort of size they're going to be or how they're going to react to you, so it's hard to know how you're going to react to it. We get some idea, maybe of the scale of it, what size it's going to be compared to you and where to look - you're often looking at a pole or some kind of stick or something like that. I guess you just have to pretend it's the scariest stick you've ever seen [laughs].

DOES THE DRAMATIC SECOND SERIES FINALE SET THE TONE FOR THE THIRD SERIES?
I think so. Those who have been following the second series will see as it has progressed it gets quite dark. It's setting up quite a lot of serious storylines for the future, and it is taking a darker tone. It still has that humour and charm, but there's definitely those darker themes taking over. Definitely, by the end of the second series, a lot of the characters, especially Merlin and also one other character, will have been changed forever, really. Big things are happening and big things are yet to come. So hopefully those storylines will be continued.

DO YOU GET RECOGNISED MUCH NOW FOR BEING IN MERLIN?
It's certainly happened a lot more this time around. Last year people sort of looked at you, but I guess now people know. It's not quite to the stage where they're running in the streets [laughs]. It's good, because people have good things to say about the show. It seems people have really taken to it.

DO YOU SEE THE SHOW GOING ON FOR YEARS, PERHAPS UP UNTIL ARTHUR BECOMES KING, OR DO THE CREATORS HAVE A PARTICULAR ENDING ALREADY PLANNED?
In terms of what the writers and producers have planned, it's not something I'm sure about. But because of the Arthurian legend, and because it can go on and the story does go on, there is obviously a future for it. It's whether we can continue to make it exciting for audiences, and as long as we keep enjoying it I guess we'll keep making them.

ARE THERE ANY PLOTS YOU'D LIKE TO SEE UNFOLD?
Just with the recent episode The Lady Of The Lake, I think that's something I would be interested to see continued. Obviously Freya's body is in the lake, I'm really interested to see what they would do with that, how they would do it. Anyone who saw the first series will also know that Excalibur is in the same lake. So that will be interesting. Also, because Merlin changes so much at the very end of the second series, I'm really interested to see how much he has changed. I'm want to see where Merlin will be and how they will pick that up again.

BEFORE MERLIN, YOU HAD ROLES ON THE CATHERINE TATE SHOW AND DOCTOR WHO. DO YOU FEEL FORTUNATE WORKING ON SUCH GREAT SHOWS SO EARLY ON IN YOUR CAREER?
Oh yeah. I was doing theatre in London and my first filming job was on the Catherine Tate Show. That was a great start, and then I was doing more theatre and then Doctor Who came along and that was great. Not only was I getting the chance to be in Doctor Who, but I just love the episode, it was a great story. I absolutely loved it. I thought this would just be amazing to be in. I was just very, very fortunate and very, very lucky to be given these opportunities, and I don't for a second take it for granted.

SO WHAT'S NEXT FOR YOU - IS IT RIGHT YOU'RE STARRING IN A FILM CALLED THE ISLAND?
Yes, I literally just finished that off up in Scotland, which was great. We actually started last year straight after Merlin, and because I was starting up for the second series we never got to finish it, so one year on we got to finish it all off. I'm not sure when, I guess that will be released sometime around summer. I'm hopefully starting something just after Christmas, which, because the dates haven't been confirmed, I don't want to say what it is yet.
