У Алишии ирландские, итальянские и ямайские корни. Она выросла в Hell’s Kitchen, одном из самых бедных районов Нью-Йорка. В юности посещала музыкальную школу, где ей привили любовь к музыке Шопена. В 14 лет написала первую песню, а три года спустя сделала первую профессиональную запись, которая вошла в саундтрек к комедии «Люди в чёрном». Впоследствии она написала еще несколько песен для звуковых дорожек к голливудским лентам. Талантливую певицу заметил легендарный продюсер Клайв Дэвид, владелец лейбла Arista Records, и заключил с ней контракт на выпуск дебютного альбома. Сопутствующий альбому сингл Fallin' стал одним из главных событий в мире ритм-энд-блюза, продержавшись на вершине национального хит-парада США в течение шести недель и заработав «Грэмми» за лучшую песню года. Музыкальные критики сравнивали Алишию с такими корифеями ритм-энд-блюза, как Стиви Уандер, Марвин Гей и Лорен Хилл.
В 2002 г. Алишия приступила к записи второго альбома, который поступил в продажу в декабре 2003 г. под названием «The Diary of Alicia Keys», дебютировав в Billboard 200 на первом месте.
