Anne Jacqueline Hathaway (known as Annie to her friends), was born on November 12, 1982 in Brooklyn, New York. Her father, a lawyer, and her mother, an actress, named her after Shakespeare's wife, Anne Hathaway.
Anne's acting career got a jump start when she landed a role in the short-lived tv series, Get Real. It was thereafter she got cast in the Disney film, The Other Side of Heaven and also The Princess Diaries. It was felt by Disney producers that The Princess Diaries would fair better and give the young starlet good exposure so it was released first, even though The Other Side of Heaven was filmed first.
After the success of The Princess Diaries, a sequel was ordered and Anne Hathaway repriesed her role as the clumsy Princess Mia. While the critics were harsh, the film still faired well.
Anne continued her film career in other family friendly films such as Nicholas Nickelby and Ella Enchanted, but soon wanted to shrug off her "goody" role by starring in a controversial film, Havoc, which went straight to DVD instead of sitting through a theatrical stint.
Hathaway gained recognition in the controversial, but Oscar award winning, Brokeback Mountain. Other films include Ella Enchanted, Hoodwinked, and The Devil Wears Prada.
