Maria Alexandrovna, full name Maria Alexandrovna Romanova, was a Russian Grand Duchess by birth and later became the Empress of Russia through her marriage to Emperor Alexander II. She was born on August 17, 1824, as the daughter of Grand Duke Alexander Niko laevich of Russia and Princess Charlotte of Prussia.

She married Alexander II of Russia on April 16, 1841, and became the Empress consort upon his accession to the throne in 1855. Maria Alexandrovna was known for her beauty, charm, and strong personality. She played a significant role in Russian court life and was a patron of the arts, Russian Empress Maria Alexandrovna

During her time as Empress, she focused on various social and educational projects, including the establishment of the Maria Alexandrovna Institute for Girls in St. Petersburg. She also supported the Russian Red Cross Society and was involved in various charitable activities.

Maria Alexandrovna and Alexander II had eight children together, including future Emperor Alexander III and Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich. However, their marriage was reportedly strained due to Alexander II's infidelity and political pressures.

Tragically, on March 13, 1880, Empress Maria Alexandrovna passed away at the age of 55. Her death deeply affected Alexander II, who was assassinated in 1881 by revolutionary terrorists.

Maria Alexandrovna's legacy is remembered for her contributions to Russian society and culture, as well as her role as a wife and mother within the Romanov dynasty.
